Springer Seicnee+Business Media, LLC 2011 Abstract Discerning the intricacies of mating systems in butterflies can be difficult, particularly when multiple mating strategies are employed and are cryptic and not exclusive. We observed the behavior and habitat use of 113 male Taylor's checkerspot butterflies (Euphydryas editha taylori). We confinned that two distinct mating strategies were exhibited; patrolling and perching. These strategies varied temporally in relation to the protandrous mating system employed. Among perching males, we recorded high site fidelity and aggressive defense of small «5 m2) territories. This telTitoriality was not clearly a function of classic or non-classic resource defense (i.e., host plants or landscape), but rather appeared to constitute guarding of female pupae (virgin females). This discrete behavior is previously undocumented for this species and has rarely been observed in butterflies. We describe a rearing protocol that allowed us to raise the threatened butterfly, Argynnis diana (Nymphalidae), while bypassing the first instar overwintering diapause. We compared the survival of offspring reared under this protocol from field-collected A. diana females from North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. Larvae were reared in the lab on three phylogenetically distinct species of Southern Appalachian violets (Viola sororia, V. pubescens,andV. pedata). We assessed larval survival in A. diana to the last instar, pupation, and adulthood. Males reared in captivity emerged significantly earlier than females. An ANOVA revealed no evidence of host plant preference by A. diana toward three native violet species. We suggest that restoration of A. diana habitat which promotes a wide array of larval and adult host plants, is urgently needed to conserve this imperiled species into the future. 1. Establishing species delimitation and evolutionary relationships among Speyeria has proven difficult due to the polytypic nature of many species, coupled with the similarity of wing patterns of sympatric species. Recent molecular work has found not all Speyeria species to be monophyletic, which could be explained by improper species definitions, incomplete lineage sorting, or ongoing hybridization and introgression. However, these studies involved broad geographic sampling where molecular markers such as the DNA barcode may be especially subject to incomplete lineage sorting. Here we focus on a more local scale, analyzing the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit I (CoI) to test whether this marker recovers four sympatric Speyeria species: adiaste (W. H. Edwards, 1864), callippe (Boisduval, 1852), coronis (Behr, 1864), and zerene (Boisduval, 1852), in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. -

MORAN l AND CHARLES D, BALDHJDGE Department of Biology, lIendrix College, 1600 Washington Ave., Conway, Arkansas 72032, USA ABSTRACT, Investigation of the distribution, preferred nectar plants, and habitat associations of Diana Fritillary, Speyena diana , Cramer in Arkansas was unop,rtaken. Arkansas populations form a disjunct group separate from larger populations of this species in the Appalachian Mountmns. Researchers have suggested that S. diana has declined over much of its range, including the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas , so tbat only a few populations are currently known ill this area. Previous surveys found this butterfly in only nine Arkansas counties. We observed populations nl this butterfly in 14 counties, 11 which were new county records. In addition, we confirmed populations in two coun ties where th e butterfly had not been recorded in over 20 years. Observations made during this study combined with previous survey work in dicate that this species is distributed throughout the Ozark and Ouachita mountains in Arkansas, occupying 22 counties. Individuals were found to occupy two types of habitat; prairie and wetland, which appeared to contain specific nectar plants that S. diana prefers. We suggest that the loss 01 th~se habitats and associated nectar plants has been thc primary cause of the butterfly's decline, but with proper management and pro tection of thcse habitats, the species may be increasing. Therefore, S. diana does not appear to be in immediate risk of extirpation in Arkansas although monitoring of existing populations is warranted. -

The core of the distribution is in the southern Appalachians from central Virginia and West Virginia through the mountains to northern Georgia and Alabama. It is also found west of this in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, Arkansas, and eastern Oklahoma. Although the Diana Fritillary is widespread, its populations are scattered within that range and fluctuate greatly between years. As a forest-dependent species, threats to the Diana Fritillary come mainly from forest management: logging operations and pest control. Another significant threat is strip mining. Research has focused primarily on high latitude species in North America, with no known studies examining responses of taxa in the southeastern United States. The Diana fritillary (Speyeria diana) has experienced a recent range retraction in that region, disappearing from lowland sites and now persisting in two phylogenetically distinct high elevation populations. These findings are consistent with the predicted effects of a warming climate on numerous taxa, including other butterfly species in North America and Europe. We used ecological niche modeling to predict future changes to the distribution of S. diana under several climate models. To evaluate how climate change might influence the geographic distribution of this butterfly, we developed ecological niche models using Maxent. We used two global circulation models, the community climate system model (CCSM) and the model for interdisciplinary research on climate (MIROC), under low and high emissions scenarios to predict the future distribution of S. -
