What you now hold in your hands is the first annual report of the GNOME Foundation, at the end of what has been an eventful year for us. Each year brings its challenges and rewards for the members of this global project. This year, many of our biggest challenges are in the legal arena. European countries have been passing laws to conform with the European Union Copyright Directive, and some, including France, have brought into law provisions which we as software developers find it hard to understand, but which appear to make much of what we do illegal. We have found our- selves in the center of patent wars as bigger companies jockey for position with offerings based on our hard work. And we are scratching our heads trying to figure out how to deal with the constraints of DRM and patents in multimedia, while still offering our users access to their media files.

A ação de uma comunidade de hackers à luz da teoria da dádiva GENAUTO CARVALHO DE FRANÇA FILHO* VICENTE MACEDO DE AGUIAR** Resumo Mais do que apontar possíveis respostas para um “enigma” contemporâneo, este artigo discute as especificidades da dinâmica de trabalho dos hackers, no processo de produção não-contratual e colaborativo, presente na comunidade on-line de desenvolvimento de softwares do Projeto GNOME (GNU Network Ob- ject Model Environment). A partir de uma imersão netnográfica de mais de um ano, analisou-se a organização do trabalho que dá vida ao processo de produção empreendido por mais de 300 hackers e colaboradores de todos os cinco conti- nentes do planeta. Mais especificamente, buscou-se compreender a natureza do trabalho adotado pelos hackers ao longo do desenvolvimento e distribuição de softwares nessa comunidade online de abrangência internacional. Como resul- tado, constatou-se a presença no Projeto GNOME de um tipo de engajamento não-contratual, associado a uma forma de trabalho e circulação de bens que se difere completamente de organizações ligadas à esfera do mercado ou do Estado, mas que consegue, por meio da internet, viabilizar um processo internacional de desenvolvimento de software de alta complexidade. International Journal of Open Source Software and Processes, 4(1), 1-19, January-March 2012 1 Time-Based Release Management in Free and Open Source (FOSS) Projects Martin Michlmayr, Centre for Technology Management, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK Brian Fitzgerald, Lero – Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland ABSTRACT As the Free and Open Source (FOSS) concept has matured, its commercial significance has also increased, and issues such as quality and sustainability have moved to the fore. In this study, the authors focus on time- based release management in large volunteer FOSS projects, and reveal how they address quality and sustain- ability issues. They discuss the differences between release management in the traditional software context and contrast it with FOSS settings. Based on detailed case studies of a number of prominent FOSS projects, they describe the move to time-based release management and identify the factors and criteria necessary for a successful transition. The authors also consider the implications for software development more generally in the current dynamic Internet-enabled environment.
