Jan 18, Sara rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novels , horror-supernatural. The Devil You Know asks the question on how do you save something from itself? The annual, The Bloody Saint , is awful. Overall, Constantine: The Hellblazer was a middle-of-the-road experience. Learn how your comment data is processed. John begs Oliver to leave him and take care of his daughters It even features Merlin, a dragon and whatever you expect of an Arthurian story. Also by Simon Spurrier. I figured 'well the other Vertigo shows [Preacher and Lucifer] are fairly bad and downright unwatchable [respectively] and Constantine got cancelled so it's probably worse. More Details The main storyline is compelling and brings in some solid themes. I liked some of the stories better than others. When you buy a book, we donate a book. Good stuff. The Dreaming Vol. The issue on itself felt rushed and awkward. I'll be honest, I just didn't like this one much. This worries me. Refresh and try again. Mar 17, Riju Ganguly rated it liked it. There are some pretty good parts, like the Nergal showdown, nicely concluding the mystery of Newcastle and the events of the previous omnibus. This second volume of the original Hellblazer stories starts strong, with John tackling Nergal and wrapping up the overarching plot from the first nine issues of the series. The readers at least this reader are left scratching their heads in confusion and are having a sneaky premonition that they've just been made. Hopefully the next one's better. The good, the arc from the last book is finished up beautifully, even giving us a seamless connection to the next mini-arc Constantine's battle with the demon and his past. The whole story felt as if Delano just thought it up at the last second. It was believable and wasn't over the top. That's a shame. There is a lot of late '80s British politics. Alongside this, The Art of the Deal just tells a good story. Constantine the Hellblazer: Volume 2 Writer I like this team and I think more issues would have been wonderful. This volume is much more of a mixed bag of stories than the other collections I've read which are Volumes 1, 4, 5 , but still worth the effort. When you try to change him like this you might as well create a new character - or else you will have reboot after reboot after reboot and none of them will catch on. This is a slow story, but it's an intriguing first look at the Constantine legacy, and also a nice translation of Constantine's own desires and goals into a different milieu. This return to basics works as a final wrap-up for the series and looks good in general. Wow - that ended with a poopy thud. Even if you say there's no kind of way, the plan is airtight and the bonds are unbreakable, John Constantine will still prove you wrong. Welcome back. This story is all evocation. This series, since it's the original, shows it's age and if you don't have any inkling of British history and an understanding of what happened with Margaret Thatcher then you might be lost. He'll find the angle we've overlooked, because we want things. Inspired by Your Browsing History. Constantine is still the troubled soul, he's got nothing to do or fear and he's wandering, but he just defeated his literal demon. I did have a soft spot for the Annual issue which had fifty-three pages of interesting backstory and exposition about John Constantine's lineage that is strongly linked to mysticism and magic. And really? I liked one issue a lot. John Constantine, he doesn't want anything, but he wants it forever and all to himself. A lot of the ending didn't make sense, from what I know of the DC universe from Sandman. Mar 30, ISBN It's dark, sick, twisted, and engrossing. I do not recommend anything else in this volume. I remember believing a lot of this bullshit. But hope is the very essence of the story. Enlarge cover. In the end, I can't help but be disappointed by the main issues in this second volume. Yes, it allows him to play with the DC superheroes more but the reason why his other run lasted is because his universe was separate from the super heroes - he was unique. As expected, it doesn't end happily. Warning: heroic tragic queer ending, but that's John , so. Sam Humphries. Just drunken, ratty, poxy, mean, stunted old John Constantine. Please try again later. These three issues really form the conclusion of the major arc from volume 1, and so should have gone there, especially the Swamp Thing related issue. David Lloyd Illustrator ,. The Horrorist. The Devil You Know asks the question on how do you save something from itself? Welcome back. Now, I might be inclined to give these stories a 3 star rating, but I'm not sure that's entirely fair. Pretty disappointing. Constantine makes a deal with a demon called Nergal by fusing his blood into his own body. What's a good deux ex machina?! Unfortunately this early stuff just seems like something I have to slog through to get to the good bits later on. Probably 3. I originally gave this 3 stars but after thinking about it overnight I'm lowering it to 2. Simon Spurrier. Next, Travel Foreman takes over for two chapters. It wasn't the longest lived series, but while it existed, it did its progenitor series proud. Since earning her BFA from Cornell University in , she has depicted the sequential exploits of zombie superheroes, demonic cheerleaders, vengeful cowboys, and dapper mutants. But that issue was entertaining as hell and didn't make me feel like I was reading the word count equivalent of the frickin Bible. Download Hi Res. Constantine the Hellblazer: Volume 2 Reviews It feels like a return to the Constantine of old. What's in that tea? Related Articles. Oct 27, John rated it liked it Shelves: graphic-novels. Yes, even Constantine. In the end, I can't help but be disappointed by the main issues in this second volume. Jul 26, Arnela rated it liked it Shelves: lgbtqa , horror , fantasy , adventure , comic , ghosts , comedy , magic , supernatural , folklore. A weird parody of Donald Trump! Its an okay story with fairly atrocious art. On the other hand we have Dr. After all, I read "Dangerous Habits" once upon a time, and that was very good. The final nail in its coffin was it couldn't even get its star artist to hang around until the end. Constantine makes a deal with a demon called Nergal by fusing his blood into his own body. Oliver's unimpressed reaction to Swamp Thing in the shower is juxtaposed to his utter horror of "is that an answering machine??? It would not at all deter from your overall enjoyment of Hellblazer stories. It is great character development and study, but man it leaves the story on the floor. It's something that takes its toll on him in this volume specifically with Oliver , but even when he gives up, he doesn't really give up. Mar 30, ISBN Villains standing around talking about evil plans, good guys talking about how hopeless it is. The artwork doesn' help, as it's as mediocre as the story. Really stretches a good adventure for Constantine dealing with broken deals and putting innocent people in harm's way. Return to Book Page. Refresh and try again. But he is, after all, merely a product of his times. I suppose this only means that I won't be reviewing any collected editions after this and strictly do individual reviews then. Sometimes there are no good choices. I'm holding out hope that the following stories would continue improving But I really wasn't too big of a fan of this volume. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. Anyway, as with the last volume, this was just very fun [well, up until it wasn't because it's not Hellblazer if other people aren't paying for John's mistakes! Jan 04, Sesana rated it it was ok Shelves: comics , horror. It's a later work by Delano and it clearly doesn't belong to the collection chronologically, but I don't mind that at all, as it's a stand-alone story. Average rating 3. The penciller work on all three is done by Richarfd Pyers Rayner, who expertly replaces John Ridgeway who had previously drawn the Hellblazer issues. Probably 3. All in all, a disappointment. I was still playing with G. The first third was amazing. Which fits right along with the sloppy, uninspired story. As a story on itself, Newcastle was great but considering all the build-up, Newcastle was a huge let-down. Our Holiday Gift Guide. LitFlash The eBooks you want at the lowest prices. Constantine the Hellblazer: Volume 2 Read Online Onward to the next book! On the downside, it's badly placed in this volume of Hellblazer as it's clearly about an older, more world-weary Constantine.

A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism.

Krimmel 1 Allen Krimmel Warner English 112B 28 November 2012 Off the Page Unit of Study: the Graphic Novel Introduction/Why Read Graphic Novels It seems as though many High School courses are fearful to stray away from their usual canonical works. A form of literature that never quite receives the amount of respect or attention that it deserves is the graphic novel. A graphic novel is usually a collection of previously released single issue comic books, or original content, in one bound collection. Not only are graphic novels an enhancement of the author’s intended vision, but they give the reader a better visualization and understanding of the story as well. The format also gives struggling readers a push toward making literature easier, and will hopefully increase their motivation to read more frequently. Graphic novels are also the perfect way to transition to full-fledged novels, or a great companion to other novels, and they can serve as a breather in a course amongst too many canonical works. Graphic novels not only use text, but imagery, time, and space to evoke emotion that couldn’t be done with words alone. This unit will captivate students by using a wide variety of genres such as: historical non-fiction, coming of age fiction, dystopian setting, fantasy, and the inevitable super-hero story. Before the Unit Before the canonical reading is assigned, you can’t assume that everyone is the class has read a graphic novel before. The page layouts, as well as the order in which the panels can be Krimmel 2 read may vary from story to story.
