The genus consists of two main elements, a northern temperate group of four species and a southern ternperate group of nine. The genus Metromerus Uvarov is synonymized with Calliptamus. A provisional key to genera in the sub-family Calliptaminae has been drawn up, together with keys to species and subspecies in the genus Cailiptamus. Observations are given on polymorphism in the genus, geographical vanation, and posible correlation of variation with climatic factors. -

Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2016) 12:47 DOI 10.1186/s13002-016-0118-7 RESEARCH Open Access Folk knowledge of invertebrates in Central Europe - folk taxonomy, nomenclature, medicinal and other uses, folklore, and nature conservation Viktor Ulicsni1* , Ingvar Svanberg2 and Zsolt Molnár3 Abstract Background: There is scarce information about European folk knowledge of wild invertebrate fauna. We have documented such folk knowledge in three regions, in Romania, Slovakia and Croatia. We provide a list of folk taxa, and discuss folk biological classification and nomenclature, salient features, uses, related proverbs and sayings, and conservation. Methods: We collected data among Hungarian-speaking people practising small-scale, traditional agriculture. We studied “all” invertebrate species (species groups) potentially occurring in the vicinity of the settlements. We used photos, held semi-structured interviews, and conducted picture sorting. Results: We documented 208 invertebrate folk taxa. Many species were known which have, to our knowledge, no economic significance. 36 % of the species were known to at least half of the informants. Knowledge reliability was high, although informants were sometimes prone to exaggeration. 93 % of folk taxa had their own individual names, and 90 % of the taxa were embedded in the folk taxonomy. Twenty four species were of direct use to humans (4 medicinal, 5 consumed, 11 as bait, 2 as playthings). Completely new was the discovery that the honey stomachs of black-coloured carpenter bees (Xylocopa violacea, X. valga)were consumed. 30 taxa were associated with a proverb or used for weather forecasting, or predicting harvests. Conscious ideas about conserving invertebrates only occurred with a few taxa, but informants would generally refrain from harming firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus), field crickets (Gryllus campestris) and most butterflies. -

Here, we employ modern phylogenetic comparative 18 methods on 8 subfamilies of Iberian grasshoppers (85 species) to examine the validity of 19 different models of evolution of body size and SSD and explore how they are shaped by a suite 20 of ecological variables (habitat specialization, substrate use, altitude) and/or constrained by 21 different evolutionary pressures (female fecundity, strength of sexual selection, length of the 22 breeding season). -

The bush-cricket Saga pedo, one of the largest predatory insects, has a scattered distribution across 20 countries in Europe. At the northern boundary of its distribution, this species is most commonly found in Slovakia and Hungary. In Slovakia in 2003–2006, 36 known and potentially favourable localities were visited and at seven this species was recorded for the first time. This species has been found in Slovakia in xerothermic forest steppes and limestone grikes (98% of localities) and on slopes (10–45°) with south-westerly or westerly aspects (90%) at altitudes of 220–585 m a.s.l. (mean 433 m, n = 20 localities). Most individuals (66%) were found in grass-herb layers 10–30 cm high and almost 87% within 10 m of a forest edge (oak, beech and hornbeam being prevalent). The maximum density was 12 nymphs (3rd–5th instar) / 1000 m2 (July 4, 510 m a.s.l.). In a comparison of five present and previous S. pedo localities, 43 species of Orthoptera were found in the present and 37 in previous localities. The entire sequence of the mitochondrial (mt)DNA control region (CR) in 3 new grasshopper species, Euchorthippus fusigeniculatus, Mekongiana xiangchengensis and Mekongiella xizangensis, consisting of 875, 733 and 1063 bp, respectively, were determined and subjected to a comparative analysis with the mtDNA CRs of 25 other orthoptera species obtained from GenBank. In this study, we stressed the comparative analysis of the stem-loop secondary structure in the A+T-rich region of all orthoptera species available to date, and it showed that the stem-loop secondary structure can be classed into 3 different types. Furthermore, we also reported new findings which may facilitate further investigations of this secondary structure and a better understanding of it. Finally, using these sequences of the secondary structure, we reconstructed a phylogeny of the Caelifera as a vehicle to examine the phylogenetic usefulness of stem-loop secondary structure data in resolving relationships within the suborder. Our results showed that the short sequences of the stem-loop secondary structure provided good resolution at the intra-subfamily level within the Caelifera, whereas it poorly resolved family- and subfamily-level relationships. -

Michele all’Adige (TN), Italy *Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY - The grasshoppers (Insecta, Orthoptera) of a sub-mediterranean zone of the Trentino region (North- East Italy) - The aim of this work is to study the Orthoptera-fauna of an esalpic area, characterized by a kind of sub- mediterranean climate, situated in the souther part of the Trentino region (North-East Italy). The Authors report the results about the distribution of the species of Orthoptera (Insecta, Orthoptera) collected during two years of sampling (2003-2004) and the results of a statistical analysis of the data. To better characterize the distribution of Orthoptera within the studied territory, we have carried out a cluster analysis regarding the environments of sampling and a GLM considering several environmental variables: altitude, solar radiation, wetness index, proximity to rivers, lakes, prairies, main streets, coppice woods and high forests. We performed a Principal Components Analysis (PCA) using only the significant variables from the GLM. The collected data have been processed by the software R 2.1. (Core Team 2005) for the statistical analysis. The significant variables are basically the altitude, the solar radiation, the proximity to major roads and to the lakes. It is relevant the presence of some species such as: Anacridium aegyptium, Antaxius difformis, Oedipoda germanica, Calliptamus siciliae, Pseudoprumna baldensis. -
