My argument is that we can infer features of human cognition from the behaviours required to control fire. This argument is grounded in the following two premises. First, some behaviours imply the operation of distinctively human cognitive abilities. For example, inhibiting prepotent responses, delaying gratification and anticipatory planning provide good evidence for executive functions, such as episodic memory, an extended working memory capacity and detached representations. Similarly, future directed cooperation, resolving social dilemmas and providing a public good imply features of human social cognition, such as theory of mind, collective intentionality and intersubjective communication. Second, fire use involved a range of cognitively demanding behaviours associated with accessing, maintaining and using fire that I argue meet the above behavioural criteria for human cognitive abilities. The thesis aims to show why this is the case. My working hypothesis is that fire related tasks stand as a sound behavioural basis for making inferences about the cognitive abilities of fire using humans. The thesis is warranted because we now have compelling evidence that humans have been using fire for at least 800 thousand years. The cognitive abilities of humans from this early time are not well understood and in dispute. The thesis is pertinent because it has high potential to provide new information about the timing and context in which important human cognitive abilities evolved. ii iii Declaration (i) The thesis comprises only my original work towards the PhD. Global health campaigns refer to marriage below this threshold as ‘child marriage’ and increasingly aim for its universal eradication, citing its apparent negative wellbeing consequences. Here, we outline and evaluate four alternative hypotheses for the persistence of early marriage, despite its associations with poor wellbeing, arising from the theoretical framework of human behavioral ecology. First, early marriage may be adaptive (e.g., it maximizes reproductive success), even if detrimental to wellbeing, when life expectancy is short. Second, parent– offspring conflict may explain early marriage, with parents profiting economically at the expense of their daughter’s best interests. Third, early marriage may be explained by intergenerational conflict, whereby girls marry young to emancipate themselves from continued labor within natal households. Finally, both daughters and parents from relatively disadvantaged backgrounds favor early marriage as a ‘best of a bad job strategy’ when it represents the best option given a lack of feasible alternatives. Murray University of British Columbia Previous research has documented cross-cultural differences in personality traits, but the origins of those differences remain unknown. The authors investigate the possibility that these cultural differences can be traced, in part, to regional differences in the prevalence in infectious diseases. Three specific hypotheses are deduced, predicting negative relationships between disease prevalence and (a) unrestricted sociosex- uality, (b) extraversion, and (c) openness to experience. These hypotheses were tested empirically with methods that employed epidemiological atlases in conjunction with personality data collected from individuals in dozens of countries worldwide.     Abstracts of Reports and Posters Amira Adaileh The Magdalenian site of Bad Kösen-Lengefeld The open air site of Bad Kösen-Lengefeld is located in Sachsen-Anhalt, Eastern Germany. It was discov- ered in the mid 1950´s in the immediate vicinity of the famous Magdalenian site of Saaleck. Since that time, archaeologists collected over 2000 lithic artifacts during systematical surveys. The technological and typological analyses of the lithic artifacts confirmed the assignment of Bad Kösen-Lengefeld to a late Magdalenian. Furthermore, the investigation of the surface collections brought forward information about the character of this camp site, the duration of its occupation and the pattern of raw material procure- ment. The fact that Bad Kösen-Lengefeld is located in a region with more than 100 Magdalenian sites fostered a comparison of the lithic inventory with other Magdalenian assemblages. Thus, allowing to spec- ify the position of the Lengefeld collection within the chorological context of the Magdalenian in Eastern Germany. Diverse and well distributed spatially, some of these resources were used and disseminated throughout the late Upper Paleolithic. Which changes do we observe during the Magdalenian then for the Azilian? The results of petrographic analysis and techno-economic analysis to several archaeological sites allow us to assess dia- chronic changes in economic behavior of these people and discuss the significance of these results.

Kenrick1 Abstract When encountering individuals with a potential inclination to harm them, people face a dilemma: Staring at them provides useful information about their intentions but may also be perceived by them as intrusive and challenging—thereby increasing the likelihood of the very threat the people fear. One solution to this dilemma would be an enhanced ability to efficiently encode such individuals—to be able to remember them without spending any additional direct attention on them. In two experiments, the authors primed self-protective concerns in perceivers and assessed visual attention and recognition memory for a variety of faces. Consistent with hypotheses, self-protective participants (relative to control participants) exhibited enhanced encoding efficiency (i.e., greater memory not predicated on any enhancement of visual attention) for Black and Arab male faces— groups stereotyped as being potentially dangerous—but not for female or White male faces. Results suggest that encoding efficiency depends on the functional relevance of the social information people encounter. Armed conflict is rife with physical threats to life, limb and property, and there has been much research pointing to the impact of threat on preferences, attitudes and behavior. Research in the field of evolutionary psychology has revealed that threat is not a singular category, but a nuanced phenomenon, where different types of threat may lead to different responses.

This adage underlies many of the justifications for government. At a more granular level, protecting citizens from potential dangers serves as the justification for many of the measures governments undertake in the domains of foreign and domestic policy. Despite the relevance of danger writ large as a motivating force for outcomes of interest, political science has not yet interrogated the domain of dangers as a coherent space within which to study political preferences, attitudes and behaviors. In this paper, I develop Threat-Heuristic Theory (THT), a new individual-level model of the psychological processes connecting the detection of danger to preferences for reducing that danger through political action. I provide an extensive review of the threat perception literature in biology and cognitive science on which the theory is built. I argue that THT’s model is general enough to apply across the space of dangers writ large and that its mechanisms are species-typical and so apply both to ordinary citizens and to political elites. I also present observational and experimental data from two original surveys to support: (1) THT’s core concept of threat classification; (2) the distinctiveness of threat classification from other relevant constructs, including disposition and political ideology; and (3) the existence of a set of issue areas where THT is likely to outperform existing theories linking threat perception to political behavior. I show that this set includes topics of current relevance, including immigration, fundamentalism, and climate change.

Over the last two million years, the human lineage underwent clear morphological changes alongside less easily measurable, but significant, behavioral and cognitive shifts as it forged, and was shaped by, new niches. During this time period, core human patterns emerged, including the following: hypercooperation; lengthy childhood and complex parenting; intricate and diverse foraging and hunting patterns; novel and dynamic material and symbolic cultures; and complex communication and information sharing, eventually resulting in language. Approaches to human evolution grounded in paleoanthropology and archaeology offer fundamental insights into our past, and traditional evolutionary the- ory offers a strong grounding for explaining them. However, given the centrality of distinctive physiological, social, semiotic, and cognitive processes in human evolutionary histories, a broader anthropological approach can facilitate additional understanding of the human story.
