A Jamestown Timeline Christopher Columbus never reached the shores of the North American Continent, but European explorers learned three things from him: there was someplace to go, there was a way to get there, and most importantly, there was a way to get back. Thus began the European exploration of what they referred to as the “New World”. The following timeline details important events in the establishment of the first permanent English settlement in America – Jamestown, Virginia. Preliminary Events 1570s Spanish Jesuits set up an Indian mission on the York River in Virginia. They were killed by the Indians, and the mission was abandoned. Wahunsonacock (Chief Powhatan) inherited a chiefdom of six tribes on the upper James and middle York Rivers. By 1607, he had conquered about 25 other tribes. 1585-1590 Three separate voyages sent English settlers to Roanoke, Virginia (now North Carolina). On the last voyage, John White could not locate the “lost” settlers. 1602 Captain Bartholomew Gosnold explored New England, naming some areas near and including Martha’s Vineyard. 1603 Queen Elizabeth I died; James VI of Scotland became James I of England. Early Settlement Years 1606, April James I of England granted a charter to the Virginia Company to establish colonies in Virginia. The charter named two branches of the Company, the Virginia Company of London and the Virginia Company of Plymouth. 1606, December 20 Three ships – Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery - left London with 105 men and boys to establish a colony in Virginia between 34 and 41 degrees latitude. 1607, April 26 The three ships sighted the land of Virginia, landed at Cape Henry (present day Virginia Beach) and were attacked by Indians. -

1 VIOLET OAKLEY: PENNSYLVANIA’S PREMIERE MURALIST Susan Hamburger Paper and slide presentation Pennsylvania Historical Association October 14, 1995 [SLIDE 1] Violet Oakley--a versatile portraitist, illustrator, stained glass artisan, and muralist--earned a reputation as the first American woman artist to succeed in the predominantly-male architectural field of mural decoration. Her strong commitment to her religion and world peace influenced her art as well as her life. [SLIDE 2] Oakley was born in Bergen Heights, New Jersey, to the artistic family of Arthur Edmund Oakley and Cornelia Swain Oakley. Both of her grandfathers, George Oakley and William Swain, belonged to the National Academy of Design and two of her aunts studied painting in Munich with Frank Duveneck. She believed that her compulsion to draw was “hereditary and chronic.” She once commented that she must have been “a monk in some earlier state of existence....The abbesses and sisters were too busy nursing the sick and doing fine needleworks. I never heard of them illuminating manuscripts. I am quite sure I was a monk.” 1 The youngest of three children, Violet followed her sisters Cornelia and Hester in learning the acceptable feminine skills of poetry writing, piano playing, 2 and sketching. While Hester attended Vassar College, Violet’s asthma prevented her from obtaining a college education which her parents thought too rigorous for her physical condition. She never let the asthma impede her artistic education or career. In 1892, at the age of eighteen, Oakley commuted to New York City to study at the Art Students’ League with Irving R. -

It is common knowledge that he was an Anglican, yet friendly and cooperative with Virginia Presbyterians. However, historians have yet to go beyond those general categories to the specific strains of Presbyterianism and Anglicanism which Henry uniquely harmonized into a unified belief system. Henry displayed a moderate, Latitudinarian, type of Anglicanism. Unlike many other Founders, his experiences with a specific strain of Presbyterianism confirmed and cooperated with these Anglican commitments. His Presbyterian influences could also be described as moderate, and latitudinarian in a more general sense. These religious strains worked to build a distinct religious outlook characterized by a respect for legitimate authority, whether civil, social, or religious. This study goes further to show the relevance of this distinct religious outlook for understanding Henry’s political stances. Henry’s sometimes seemingly erratic political principles cannot be understood in isolation from the wider context of his religious background. Uniquely harmonized -

This account curiously turns out to be unsupported by direct evidence. This Article recounts an alternative history of the origins of English liberties in American constitutionalism. -

2012 BOOK REVIEWS 317 Howard Pyle: Imagining an American School of Art. By JILL P. M AY and ROBERT E. MAY. (Champaign: University of Illinois Press, 2011. 288 pp. Illustrations, notes, index. $45.) Once upon a time, the latest book illustrated by Howard Pyle (1853–1910) was on every American child’s wish list. In the meantime, youngsters could enjoy his vivid portrayals of history and legend in the pages of St. Nicholas, Everybody’s, Collier’s, Century, Scribner’s, and Harper’s magazines. Though not a household name today, Pyle was the preeminent illustrator of the Gilded Age, and his visual interpretations of the American Revolution, Robin Hood and his Merry Men, the Knights of the Round Table, and a motley crew of pirates were indelibly printed on the imaginations of several generations. Now a new book published in conjunction with the centenary of Howard Pyle’s death has redis- covered this forgotten icon of the popular culture. The subject is custom-made for authors Jill P. May, professor of literacy and language, and Robert E. May, professor of history (both at Purdue University), who bring to this work their expertise in fields beyond the history of art. This is not a coffee-table book but the first extensively documented biography of Howard Pyle. The authors combed through numerous archives and museum collections and wove their findings into a fluent narrative that documents Pyle’s personal life and his career as an illus- trator, author, and teacher. The frequent use of quotations from letters re-creates the intimate conversations between Pyle and his wide circle of colleagues and students, revealing the artist’s exuberant personality and manic energy. -

Ch. 3 Section 4: Life in the English Colonies Colonial Governments The English colonies in North America all had their own governments. Each government was given power by a charter. The English monarch had ultimate authority over all of the colonies. A group of royal advisers called the Privy Council set English colonial policies. Colonial Governors and Legislatures Each colony had a governor who served as head of the government. Most governors were assisted by an advisory council. In royal colonies the English king or queen selected the governor and the council members. In proprietary colonies, the proprietors chose all of these officials. In a few colonies, such as Connecticut, the people elected the governor. In some colonies the people also elected representatives to help make laws and set policy. These officials served on assemblies. Each colonial assembly passed laws that had to be approved first by the advisory council and then by the governor. Established in 1619, Virginia's assembly was the first colonial legislature in North America. At first it met as a single body, but was later split into two houses. The first house was known as the Council of State. The governor's advisory council and the London Company selected its members. The House of Burgesses was the assembly's second house. The members were elected by colonists. It was the first democratically elected body in the English colonies. In New England the center of politics was the town meeting. In town meetings people talked about and decided on issues of local interest, such as paying for schools. -

The Notebook of Bass Otis, Philadelphia Portrait Painter THOMAS KNOLES INTRODUCTION N 1931, Charles H. Taylor, Jr., gave the American Antiquarian Society a small volume containing notes and sketches made I by Bass Otis (1784-1 S6i).' Taylor, an avid collector of Amer- ican engravings and lithographs who gave thousands of prints to the Society, was likely most interested in Otis as the man generally credited with producing the first lithographs made in America. But to think of Otis primarily in such terms may lead one to under- estimate his scope and productivity as an artist, for Otis worked in a wide variety of media and painted a large number of portraits in the course of a significant career which spanned the period between 1812 and 1861. The small notebook at the Society contains a varied assortment of material with dated entries ranging from 1815 to [H54. It includes scattered names and addresses, notes on a variety of sub- jects, newspaper clippings, sketches for portraits, and even pages on which Otis wiped off his paint brush. However, Otis also used the notebook as an account book, recording there the business side of his life as an artist. These accounts are a uniquely important source of information about Otis's work. Snyder N 1698 Gabriel Thomas, writing for Europeans one of the first accounts of Philadelphia, predicted optimistically that "in a very short space of time she will, in all probability, make a fine I 1 Figure in the World, and be a most Celebrated Emporeum." One hundred years later, a volume of engraved plates was published there which demonstrated to the world that his prophecy had been fulfilled. This work, The City of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania North America; as it appeared in the Year 1800, was the idea and the product of William Russell Birch, who had been born in England in 1755 and had come to Philadelphia in 1794. An artist by profes- sion, he was celebrated in the painting of miniatures in enamel, an art then very popular in the mother country.
