It started when 11-year head coach Tim Walsh retired on Nov. 25, two days after the TMustangs closed out the 2019 campaign with a come-from-behind 28-21 win at Northern Colorado.

Seventeen days later, Beau Baldwin, the highly successful head coach at Eastern Washington -- 2010 NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision national champion -- who served the last three sea- sons as offensive coordinator and quarter- backs coach at Cal, returned to the head coaching ranks, this time with the Mustangs.

After helping the Bears to a Redbox Bowl victory over Illinois on Dec. 30 inside Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Baldwin spent the first month of the new year attending the Coaches Association Convention in Nashville, assembling a coaching staff and recruiting prospective stu- dent-athletes. The Mustangs finished the year 3-8, their third straight campaign below the .500 mark after qualifying for the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in 2016. The season could have had a different outcome, possibly 8-3, a share of the Big Sky Conference title and another playoff berth, were it not for some misfortune late in five games during a six-game losing streak.

The Mustangs fell 34-28 in overtime to Montana State after overcoming a 28-7 deficit in the fourth quarter. Following losses to Weber State and Oregon State, Cal Poly opened Big Sky play with a 24-21 win at Southern Utah. Hamler ran for two scores, Jake Jeffrey added another scoring run and Colton Theaker connected on a 36-yard field goal. The Thunderbirds had a chance to send the game into overtime, but a 36-yard field goal attempt with 2:10 to play hit the left upright and Cal Poly was able to run out the clock.

The Mustangs were 2-2 and poised to make a run at their second Big Sky title — Cal Poly claimed a share of the crown in 2012, its first season in the conference — but consecutive losses to Montana State, UC Davis, North Dakota, Sacramento State, Idaho and Eastern Washington dashed those hopes.

Five of Cal Poly’s opponents this season have qualified for the FCS Boundary safety playoffs. The Mustangs also played their second game ever against a Pac-12 school and, according to USA Today’s Jeff Sagarin Ratings, Kitu Humphrey played the fifth-toughest schedule among the 124 FCS programs this finished his Cal year. Walsh, who arrived at Cal Poly in January 2009 after two seasons as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordi- nator at Army West Point, coached at Portland State for 14 seasons (1993-2006) and four campaigns at Sonoma State (1989-92).
