SERVANTS’ PASSAGE: Cultural identity in the architecture of service in British and American country houses 1740-1890 2 Volumes Volume 1 of 2 Aimée L Keithan PhD University of York Archaeology March 2020 Abstract Country house domestic service is a ubiquitous phenomenon in eighteenth and nineteenth century Britain and America. Whilst shared architectural and social traditions between the two countries are widely accepted, distinctive cultural identity in servant architecture remains unexplored. This thesis proposes that previously unacknowledged cultural differences between British and American domestic service can be used to rewrite narratives and re-evaluate the significance of servant spaces. It uses the service architecture itself as primary source material, relying on buildings archaeology methodologies to read the physical structures in order to determine phasing. Archival sources are mined for evidence of individuals and household structure, which is then mapped onto the architecture, putting people into their spaces over time. Spatial analysis techniques are employed to reveal a more complex service story, in both British and American houses and within Anglo-American relations. Diverse spatial relationships, building types and circulation channels highlight formerly unrecognised service system variances stemming from unique cultural experiences in areas like race, gender and class. Acknowledging the more nuanced relationship between British and American domestic service restores the cultural identity of country house servants whose lives were not only shaped by, but who themselves helped shape the architecture they inhabited. Additionally, challenging accepted narratives by re-evaluating domestic service stories provides a solid foundation for a more inclusive country house heritage in both nations. This provides new factors on which to value modern use of servant spaces in historic house museums, expanding understanding of their relevance to modern society.

Together they illustrate the principal economic factor - sugar production - in two centuries of St. John Island history. Also, the nature of the records and aa.terial point to this joint treatment. This study was prompted by Resources Study Proposal VI-H-1 and, taken together with the reports by Resident Architect Frederick c. Gjessing, is offered as a fulfillment of it. The report follows an on-site examination and inspection made during a study trip to the Virgin Islands on May 20-28, 1969, at which time there was every assistance from Mr. Gjessing, the Park staff, and officials of the Public Library of St. Thomas, where there is a very useful Virgin Islands collection. • Domestic 3: Suburban and Country Houses Listing Selection Guide Summary
Domestic 3: Suburban and Country Houses Listing Selection Guide Summary Historic England’s twenty listing selection guides help to define which historic buildings are likely to meet the relevant tests for national designation and be included on the National Heritage List for England. Listing has been in place since 1947 and operates under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. If a building is felt to meet the necessary standards, it is added to the List. This decision is taken by the Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). These selection guides were originally produced by English Heritage in 2011: slightly revised versions are now being published by its successor body, Historic England. The DCMS‘ Principles of Selection for Listing Buildings set out the over-arching criteria of special architectural or historic interest required for listing and the guides provide more detail of relevant considerations for determining such interest for particular building types. See https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/principles-of- selection-for-listing-buildings. Each guide falls into two halves. The first defines the types of structures included in it, before going on to give a brisk overview of their characteristics and how these developed through time, with notice of the main architects and representative examples of buildings. The second half of the guide sets out the particular tests in terms of its architectural or historic interest a building has to meet if it is to be listed. A select bibliography gives suggestions for further reading. This guide, one of four on different types of Domestic Buildings, covers suburban and country houses.

  • What Part Did Decorative Plasterwork Play in the Transformation of the Great House Before 1660?
What part did decorative plasterwork play in the transformation of the Great House before 1660? Annika McQueen June 2018 Decorative plasterwork has become one element that characterises the image of the Great House in England. Wide-ranging social and economic change accompanied the end of the medieval period and the arrival of the Tudor dynasty in 1485. The domestic stability England enjoyed during the Elizabethan period was cemented by the end of hostilities with Spain when James I ascended the throne1. As a result, substantial change occurred in the form, function and internal decorative design of the Great House. As will be exemplified in this essay, plasterwork continued to be important as a decorative material in the Caroline period and reflected changing fashions in architectural and artistic design. In this essay I will argue that this change was more of an evolution than a transformation, as it occurred slowly over a long period of time. In 1501 Henry VII granted a charter to the Worshipful Company of Plasterers of London, giving the trade formal recognition and attesting to its rising popularity as a material.2 As Beard has pointed out, Plaster and Stucco are distinct entities; the best plaster being derived from burning gypsum and the more usual kind of English plasterwork being comprised of slaked lime, sand and a binding agent such as hair.3 Stucco is derived from the addition of marble dust to slaked lime, rather than sand or hair.4 Gapper comments that the term ‘pargetting’ was used in the sixteenth century to mean internal as well as external plastering; alongside the term ‘plaster’.5 For the purposes of this essay, ‘plasterwork’ will be taken to include both plaster and stucco work and will focus on the role internal decorative plasterwork played in the evolution of the Great House.

See Archaeological Ethics and Law. Introduction The Crow Canyon Archaeological Center (Crow Canyon) began the Northern Chaco Outliers Project (NCOP) in the summer of 2016. This project seeks to understand human and environment interaction, social stratification, community centers with public architecture, and identity formation during the Chaco and post-Chaco periods in the northern San Juan region. The NCOP uses data from three sites―the Haynie site (5MT1905), the Ida Jean site (5MT4126), and Wallace Ruin (5MT6970)―located within a 1-km radius that include four Chaco-style great houses and one great kiva. These sites compose the Lakeview group, which is one of the densest concentrations of great houses north of Aztec Ruins in northern New Mexico. Other great-house clusters in the northern San Juan region include the Ackmen/Lowry community and the Mitchell Springs community. The Haynie site, which is the primary focus of the NCOP, experienced extensive disturbance for more than 30 years in the recent past. Previous landowners engaged in nonprofessional digging, which compromised the archaeological record at the site, but research potential remains robust (Ryan 2016a). NCOP research began in 2016, when Crow Canyon conducted in-field artifact analyses and contracted the production of drone maps, aerial imagery, and photogrammetry of the immediate area surrounding the Haynie site.

  • Reef Bay Great House Historic District
JUL 'i 3 1981 APPENDIX B REEF BAY GREAT HOUSE HISTORIC DISTRICT DESCRIPTION The site of Reef Bay Great House Historic District is on a small spur extending into Reef Bay Valley from Bordeaux Mountain to the east, approximately 1,000 yards inland from the shoreline of the bay. The district contains the Great House, a servants house, a stable, a privy and a well. The elevation is about 250 feet above sea level and it is reached by a trail that branches off the Reef Bay-Lameshur Trail. The Great House is still partially roofed but several bearing masonry walls show signs of failure and on the interior all woodwork is badly deteriorated as are exterior and interior masonry finishes. The masonry walls of the servants quar ters and the stable still stand to plate height in a deteriorated condition. The cookhouse, the privy and the walls of the semi-circular terrace on the north side of the Great House have collapsed as has the once roofed terrace to the south of the Great House. Reef Bay Great House is the most important architectural monument within the Virgin Islands National Park and a significant example of West Indian architec ture. Considered in connection with the remains of Reef Bay Sugar Factory and its historical association with the various ruins within the confines of Reef Bay Valley, it ranks as the most complete exhibit of the plantation economy of the West Indies within the Virgin Islands. Its spectacular and well-planned setting makes it a noteworthy example of historic landscaping, both for the qua lity of the design and its rarity.
