NEOLIBERAL INDIA’S FEARS SEEN THROUGH A CINEMATIC PRISM Alessandra Consolaro Università degli Studi di Torino, Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici, [email protected] Abstract. 21st century India constructs itself as a neoliberal and consumerist superpower. In his cinematic career Shah Rukh Khan has become an icon of a rampant middle class, transforming himself from an antihero into a model story of Indian success. Focusing on identity politics, in this article his persona is utilized as a prism through which some representations of fears connected to 20th century India can be observed. Keywords: Indian cinema – Contemporary Indian history – Identity – Communalism 1. Bollywood Badshah At the beginning of the 21st century India constructs itself as a neoliberal and consumerist superpower. Working with the assumption that visual culture, specifically film, draws on wider hegemonic discourses circulating within the public space to construct its own narrative, and that hegemonic definitions emerge and take shape within ‘public culture,’ of which film is a part; this article utilizes Shah Rukh Khan [hereafter SRK]’s persona as a prism through which some representations of fears connected to contemporary India can be Governare la paura - 2014, luglio - ISSN 1974-4935 Alessandra Consolaro observed. Is this simply a matter of modernist self-realization, now cast in a mythic frame that springs from commercial cinema’s penchant for the grandiose, the spectacular, and the hyperbolic? Or is something more at stake in a particular industry’s on-screen and off-screen self-projections at this conjuncture, in its mediatized articulation of the mythic and the reflexive, and in its willful blurring of the so-called “presentational” and “representational” modes1 in the service of metafiguration? “Without reflexivity, we are nothing” The formation of the modern subject entails the reflexive production of self- knowledge: this, by now, is something of an axiom. Perhaps less acknowledged is an equally habitual flight to the realm of myth. A Hegelian imperative of self-actualization, in accordance with this or that transcen- dental principle, translates the conscious management of one’s becoming into a reflexive performance of some pre-ordained, idealized Self; even when more speculative approaches threaten to scuttle teleology, it is difficult to rein in romantic-utopian impulses.

This opening event is a part of a pilot study, funded by the AHRC that seeks to look and uncover the effect of translation practices within the cinematic world of Bollywood cinema, and specifically across Europe. “The dubbing & subtitling of Bollywood: A Colloquium”, is the first of four events entirely dedicated to cultural, social and historical implications of dubbing and subtitling of Bollywood cinema world-wide, with a specific focus on these practices in Europe. This colloquium seeks to bring together scholars and early career researchers working on the different aspects of multilingualism pertaining to translation, transliteration and semiotic shifts of one language when dubbed and subtitled into another, for the global audience of popular Hindi cinema. This colloquium opens the 4 events that will take place in 4 different cities: Leicester, Vienna, Budapest and Rome; all with the scope of studying multilingual Bollywood across European cities, and with it, trace the nuances that affect both the mediation of content as well as the cultural, professional, social and political milieus in which such practices occur. The colloquium, seeks to respond if cinema is a ‘universal language’, and against this backdrop, interrogate the polyglot nature of Bollywood cinema, its industry’s procedures and the complexity of its global reception.
