80% COVID-19 patients asymptomatic – Prof. Vitarana

By Sulochana Ramiah Mohan

Senior Virologist and Leader of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Professor Tissa Vitarana noted that 80 per cent of those who are infected with COVID-19 are asymptomatic but they can still infect others, making it that much harder to control the spread of the disease. He was of the opinion that instead of waiting for a vaccine to arrive, which could take time and be very costly, the public should adhere to health guidelines in order to stop the rapid spread of the disease. Prof. Vitarana further noted that no one was immune to COVID-19. He also noted that the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test will identify only 70 per cent of the infection level accurately. “But PCR tests done against other viruses have a level of accuracy of more than 90 per cent. This means that further research needs to be done to improve the accuracy PCR tests done to suspected COVID-19 cases. About 30 per cent of the positive cases are being missed,” he claimed. “The World Health Organisation (WHO) has expressed its willingness to give vaccines to 20 per cent of our population free of charge. The WHO can access the institutional capacity to ensure the safety and potency of those vaccines. These vaccines should be used to save the lives of those infected by the Virus, mainly the elderly and those who have other chronic medical conditions, for example heart patients. However, the main purpose of giving vaccines to a population is to make them immune to the Disease. To effectively stop the transmission of the Virus, at least 80 per cent of the population needs to be immunised, so for that the extra 60 per cent has to be bought at a high price. Research is still being done on how frequently the vaccine should be given to obtain optimum potency,” he said. “The duty of the Government is to increase public awareness so that each person understands the importance of following the three main health rules. The real solution is to always wear a mask when other people are present, maintain a distance of at least one metre from another individual while it must be noted that a two-metre gap is better and frequently wash your hands using soap, especially after going out and being in contact with any surface which has been touched by other people.” Prof. Vitarana also expressed concern over the severe shortage of medicines in Government hospitals. “I would like to suggest to the Minister that the way out would be to implement the Prof. Senaka Bibile medicinal drug policy, suitably modified to meet today’s situation. Prof. Bibile called for tenders worldwide to meet the medicinal requirements, not only of the public healthcare system but also that of the private sector,” he added. Following 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, a debate on madrasas and institutions that preaches Sharia law emerged and both previous Government and current Government pledged it will rigorously scrutinise such institutions and schools. There were 1,669 Islam Madrasa schools and 317 Arabic schools registered under the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs all over the country by May 2019. It was also established that, although Madrasa and Arabic schools that teach Islamic traditions and customs are registered by the Department, it is not entrusted with the supervision of these schools and they are being done by their respecting governing bodies. The need to implement such methods occurred following 2019 Easter Attacks as it was revealed the mastermind behind this attack Zaharan Hashim and Naufer Moulavi, who was later identified as the real leader behind the attacks have, for years, preached Sharia law and brainwashed rich and educated youths to become terrorists in the name of Islamism.
