Village defense. Narathiwat Provincial Vice-Governor Pradit Suknathasawat on August 31 an- nounced the opening of a new scheme designed to help villages in the South defend themselves from insurgents – and earn extra income at the same time. V/Gov Pradit presided over a ceremony to mark the found- ing of Ban Thon Chalermprakiat in the playing field of Ban Thon School in Village 5, Tambon Khok Khian, Muang district. The park will be used to train around 1,000 villagers to work in shifts to defend public buildings, such as the village school and health center, K. Pradit ex- plained. Women and youths from the village will also be given lessons in handicrafts such as bag weav- ing and model-ship building, to help them earn more income, he added.

huket’s Supercheap was the contest venue for the recent regional round of Super Chef, a TV cooking competition show. Contestants from around the region crafted coco- Pnut milk dishes for the chance to win the grand prize of 500,000 baht. The average streetside restaurant cook would have to make nearly 200,000 green curries before reaching the half-a-million- baht mark in trade, so the chance of earning so much money from just a few dishes brought enthusiastic chefs to the Supercheap car park to wage a coconut milk war. The Super Chef Contest prize giveaway is a promotional ef- fort by coconut milk brand Chao Koh (Islander) by Ampol Food Processing (APF) in celebration of the company’s 20th anniver- sary. On the menu for the competition were horse-crab curry, pork curry, and sweet corn with sticky rice and coconut milk, which were judged by cuisine professionals, including professors from the provincial folk-art center, publishers of the food magazine Mae Barn, food-and-beverage program instructors from Suandusit Rajabhat University and actress Fresh Arissara. Three rounds saw the 12 regional contestants whittled down to just one finalist who will go on to compete against other regional entries at the final round in Bangkok. Chareonrat Jarupongsa from Nakhon Sri Thammarat won in the food presentation category while Phuket native Pinpa Tathaisong put her nine years’ experience as a chef to good use to cook her way to becoming the winner overall for the Southern Thailand. Mr Chareonrat was awarded a trophy for his cuisine cre- ativity by royal ambassador to Thai heritage conservation HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Mrs Pinpa will go on to compete in Bangkok against four other regional winners from eastern, northern, northeastern and central provinces on October 18 and 19.
