  • Felice Beato: a Photographer on the Eastern Road
DATE: November 4, 2010 Contact: Melissa Crowley FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (310) 440-6795 / [email protected] THE FASCINATING LIFE AND WORK OF FELICE BEATO, ONE OF THE EARLIEST PHOTOGRAPHERS TO CAPTURE VIEWS OF THE EAST Felice Beato: A Photographer on the Eastern Road LOS ANGELES—In recent years Felice Beato (1832–1909) has come to be recognized as one of the major photographers of the nineteenth century, yet until now there has been no general survey of his singular life and work. Felice Beato: A Photographer on the Eastern Road (Getty Publications, $39.95, hardcover) includes an engaging narrative of his life and entrepreneurial career and a thought-provoking essay on Beato and the photography of war. There is a generous selection of his photographs, including panoramas and hand-colored Japanese studies, along with captivating period ephemera, lithographs based on his work, and humorous caricatures of the artist. Born in Venice, Italy, Beato came of age in the Ottoman capital of Constantinople. In 1856, as a young apprentice, he photographed the sites of the Crimean War, thereby launching a long and remarkably adventurous career. Over the next half century he would follow in the wake of the British Empire: Egypt, Palestine, and Syria; India, where he photographed the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny; and China, where he chronicled the Second Opium War. He spent some thirty years in Japan and Burma, where he was among the first commercial photographers at the time that these countries were starting to open to the West. This abundantly illustrated book accompanies an exhibition—the first devoted to Beato’s entire oeuvre—on view at the J.

  • Felice Beato's Japan
X Portraits From the Dawn of a New Era X X X X X X X X X X X The above details all derive from the portrait album introduced in this unit. X Titled “Photographic Views of Japan with Historical and Descriptive Notes,” the photographs were taken by Felice Beato, the pioneer foreign X photographer in Yokohama, Japan’s major treaty port. The album was published shortly after 1868, the year the centuries-old feudal regime headed X by a hereditary Shogun was overthrown and a new, “modern” government under the Meiji emperor established. Through Beato’s lens, we gain an X unusually intimate view of a range of Japanese individuals on the cusp of a new era in their history. X 1 Felice A. Beato, photographer Felice A. Beato (ca. 1833–ca. 1909), a naturalized British citizen and extraordinary photographer, first arrived in Japan in 1863. Beato found the treaty port of Yokohama ideal for establishing a commercial photography studio. Once settled in Yokohama, Beato only made one trip abroad—to Korea to cover a British-U.S. military expedition in the mid 1870s. Established as a treaty port in 1859, Yokohama grew rapidly and bustled with the activity of foreign businessmen, merchants, seaman, and tourists, as well as a rapidly expanding population of Japanese attracted by its commercial opportunities. Beato's life and work are of considerable interest to scholars, curators, and collectors. His album Photographic Views Portrait of Felice A. Beato, 1860s of Japan with Historical and Descriptive by an unknown photographer (detail). Notes, published around 1869, [bjs100] introduces a dialogue between the photograph and the descriptive essay.

This report contains a wealth of information on Institutional trends in the acquisition, loan, and management of the National Collections. First published in 1987, the statistics have become an important indicator of both progress and problems in collections management, informing resource allocators and the Institution’s personnel of events occurring in a given year, and trends reflected over time. This year’s Collection Statistics marks a departure from previous years. More important, it marks the beginning of changes that will occur as the National Collections Program (NCP) of Smithsonian Institution Archives reviews the needs and wishes of its multiple audiences. In the coming year, NCP will seek to identify new and expanded methods to communicate findings on the growth, care, and use of the National Collections. This year’s change moves the publication toward increased uniformity and comparability of data.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their support along the way. My greatest debt is to my dissertation advisors Mrinalini Sinha and Farina Mir. Mrinalini has supported me through out and has always been a source of intellectual support and more. She has allowed me the freedom to grow and gain from her vast knowledge, while being patient with me finding my way. There are no words that can express my gratitude to her for all that she has done. Farina Mir’s rigor sets high standards for us all and will guide my way over the years. The rest of my committee, Webb Keane, William Glover and Paul Johnson have all been wonderful with their time and support through this dissertation writing. My deepest thanks also to Dilip Menon, Shahid Amin, Sunil Kumar and Neeladri Bhattacharya for the early intellectual training in historical thinking and methodology.

I argue that the family photograph bears shifts in identity by virtue of the archival context it is found in, and that the character of image archives themselves is determined by the affective potential of the photographs that they hold. Vast differences in photographic and institutional particularities make any coherent definition of the archive difficult, with the family oscillating between being in bright focus or in the shadows of different collections. For the majority of this essay, a range of examples from India will reveal the negotiations that are involved in housing family photographs, indicative of the polyphonous reality of archives.

  • Felice Beato's Japan: People”
X Portraits From the Dawn of a New Era X X X X X X X X X X X The above details all derive from the portrait album introduced in this unit.
