Hailed by The New Yorker as “...the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument”, Mr. Meyer’s unparalleled technique and musicianship in combination with his gift for composition have brought him to the fore, where he is appreciated by a vast, varied audience. • YO-YO MA Cellist
YO-YO MA Cellist Yo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is testament to his enduring belief in culture’s power to generate trust and understanding. Whether performing new or familiar works from the cello repertoire, collaborating with communities and institutions to explore culture’s role in society, or engaging unexpected musical forms, Mr. Ma strives to foster connections that stimulate the imagination and reinforce our humanity. Mr. Ma maintains a balance between engagements as a soloist with orchestras, recital and chamber music activities, and collaborations with a wide circle of artists and institutions. With partners from around the world and across disciplines, Mr. Ma creates programs that stretch the boundaries of genre and tradition to explore music-making as a means not only to share and express meaning, but also as a model for the cultural collaboration he considers essential to a strong society. Expanding upon this belief, in 1998 Mr. Ma established Silkroad, a collective of artists from around the world who create music that engages their many traditions. In addition to presenting performances in venues from Suntory Hall to the Hollywood Bowl, Silkroad collaborates with museums and universities to develop training programs for teachers, musicians, and learners of all ages. Silkroad has commissioned more than 100 new works from composers and arrangers around the globe, and released seven albums, most recently a collection of music recorded for The Vietnam War, a documentary film from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. Through his work with Silkroad, as well as throughout his career, Yo-Yo Ma seeks to expand the classical cello repertoire, frequently performing lesser-known music of the 20th century and commissions of new concertos and recital pieces.

  • Béla Fleck: How to Write a Banjo Concerto
PRESENTS BÉLA FLECK: HOW TO WRITE A BANJO CONCERTO Bookings / Press inquiries: Jim Browne Argot Pictures 235 Duffield Street, #140 Brooklyn, NY 11201 Tel: 646.732.3725 [email protected] 96 minutes, Color, Stereo English, USA, 2014 BÉLA FLECK: HOW TO WRITE A BANJO CONCERTO “Béla Fleck: How To Write A Banjo Concerto” follows banjo trailblazer Béla Fleck through one of his most challenging musical journeys, into the world of the Symphony Orchestra. Béla is commissioned to compose a banjo concerto, possibly the first of its kind, for banjo and 80 piece symphony orchestra. It begins before he has written a note, and concludes a year later, with the sold out premiere concert with the Nashville Symphony. An intimate look at the process of composition and collaboration, “How to Write a Banjo Concerto” features Earl Scruggs, Chick Corea, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile, Zakir Hussain, Abigail Washburn and other close musical friends of Béla’s. LONG SYNOPSIS: Banjo master Béla Fleck has taken on the lifelong task of emancipating his instrument from stereotype and misconception. In 2006 he went to Africa to research the banjo’s roots, and jam with incredible acoustic musicians around the continent. This resulted in the award-winning documentary “Throw Down Your Heart”. Now, Béla is back on screen with a new musical adventure: He’s been commis- sioned to write a major banjo concerto for the Nashville Symphony. Despite having no experience creating orchestral music on his own, no ability to read and write standard music notation, and no formal training in classical composition or orchestration, he takes on the project with his customary single-mindedness, creating an amazing new work - all in front of the cameras.

  • Ross Lockridge Jr. Edgar Meyer Sylvia Mcnair
50 FAMOUS IU ALUMNI L-P Ross Lockridge Jr. Author Ross Lockridge Jr. is the author of Raintree County, a 1,060-page epic many have called The Great American Novel. Graduating from IU in 1935 with a 4.33 grade point average—the highest GPA ever accumulated at the university— Lockridge entered a doctoral program at Harvard in 1940, announcing he would write a dissertation on Walt Whitman. In reality, he began writing Raintree County. In 1946, he carried the 20-pound manuscript to publisher Houghton Mifflin in a suitcase. Within five weeks the novel was excerpted in Life magazine, won an enormous monetary prize and movie contract from MGM Studios, and was the Main Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club. But the publisher, the studio, and the book club wanted significant cuts and revisions. Lockridge, already depressed, found the situation unbearable. The day before his novel was announced as the No. 1 national bestseller, he took his own life.
