(Thatcher 1999:105) It is clear from the foregoing that these different standpoints on the side of different church traditions are doing more harm than good, because it is sending mixed messages to the world. There is need for a missional approach on the side of the church in this regard and only a missional church can succeed in developing a clear biblical message regarding cohabitation and premarital sex amongst the youth in South Africa today. The phrase ‘missional church’ is used in this context to refer to those churches that seek to remain true to the missio Dei [mission of God] by not only identifying cohabitation and premarital sex amongst the youth as missionary frontiers to be crossed, but also by devising practical strategies to help bring down numbers of those who engage in such practices. This decline in the importance of Islamic doctrine has been attributed primarily to the spread of European colonialism. The western powers that ruled Muslim lands replaced much of the existing law in colonized territories with laws modeled after those applied in the home country. The trend toward a narrower role for Islamic law reversed itself in the latter part of the twentieth century. Since the 1970s, a number of majority Muslim states have passed laws prescribing the application of a form of Islamic law on matters that had long been governed exclusively by laws derived from the western legal tradition. A central objective of many of these Islamization programs has been to implement Islamic criminal law, and a large share of the new Islamic crimes that have been passed relate to sex offenses. This paper looks at the enactment and enforcement of recent criminal legislation involving sexual morality in the Indonesian province of Aceh. In the early 2000s, the provincial legislature for Aceh passed a series of laws prescribing punishments for Islamic crimes, the first such legislation in the country’s history. The first piece of legislation, enacted in 2002, authorizes punishment in the form of imprisonment, fine, or caning for acts defined as violating Islamic orthodoxy or religious practice.1 The 2002 statute also established an Islamic police force called the Wilayatul Hisbah charged 1.

We start by examining general views of male and female sexuality and then explore how these views relate to premarital, marital and extramarital heterosexual sex. Our study is based on qualitative data from a variety of segments of Thai society derived through the use of focus group discussions and individual focused in-depth interviews. Research into sexuality, sexual behaviour and related attitudes in Thailand, as in much of the rest of the developing world, has been stimulated by recent concerns about the worldwide AIDS pandemic and, to some extent, by the increasing international attention to issues related to gender. In Thailand, increasing interest in sexual behaviour has been further fuelled by the spread of the AIDS virus from marginalized groups into mainstream Thai society. Sexual networks facilitating this spread of HIV infection in Thailand link prostitutes with their male customers, and the customers with their wives and non-commercial sex partners (Brown et al. 1994). The key role played by commercial sex in male social life and in the spread of HIV in Thailand is reflected by the widespread availability and patronage of commercial sex outlets by men (Boonchalaksi and Guest 1994).

Cailornia Institute of Integral Studies San Francisco, CA, USA This paper explores how the extension of contemplative qualities to intimate relationships can transform human sexual/emotional responses and relationship choices. The paper reviews contemporary findings from the field of evolutionary psychology on the twin origins of jealousy and monogamy, argues for the possibility to transform jealousy into sympathetic joy (or compersion), addresses the common objections against polyamory (or nonmonogamy), and challenges the culturally prevalent belief that the only spiritually correct sexual options are either celibacy or (lifelong or serial) monogamy. To conclude, it is suggested that the cultivation of sympathetic joy in intimate bonds can pave the way to overcome the problematic dichotomy between monogamy and polyamory, grounding individuals in a radical openness to the dynamic unfolding of life
