When the emcee summons “The Rehabiliskater,” 37-year- old redhead Lisa DeHahn Jade ’95 skates to the front of the pack and waves to the cheering home crowd. The back of her navy-and-white jersey reads “REHAB.” Players choose derby names as a rite of passage, and “The Rehabiliskater” is a play on Jade’s former job as a substance-abuse counselor. (She’s now a mental health counselor in a Maine correctional center.) What ensues is a fast-paced circling of the track, punctuated by whistles, resets—and hard hits. The gist of the sport is four blockers from each team circle in a pack as the jammer tries to catch up from behind and break through to the front, earning points by lapping an opposing play- er. As a jammer, “basically you’re the quarterback of the team,” explained Lena “Whiskey Ginger” Barouh ’07, who skates with the Seattle Tilted Thunder Rail Birds.

    PREVIOUSLY ON “We are all Gossip Girl”: Gossip Girl and the Promise of Interactive Television Elisa Lange In November 2010, Current TV, a cable network founded by former Vice President Al Gore, has started airing a 30 minute TV series called Bar Karma, which is created in online collaboration with fans and is thus a new step to truly participatory and interactive TV. On a website users can pitch storylines, comment on submitted entries, talk to the producers, and contribute marketing ideas. The show is co-produced by SimCity creator Will Wright and features well-known actors like William Sanderson (http://current.com/studios/about/). Of course, there is no guarantee that the fans’ story idea will find its way into the actual show since the producers and writers still hold the power to decide how and if a pitch is worked into the final product. Still, this project allows viewer to have more than an imaginary control over the televised narrative even if the project’s success still remains to be seen. Still, interactivity rarely plays out on the primary level of the TV program itself, but more commonly on the secondary level and tertiary level of the televisual text, that is network created websites that allow some contributions from fans and unregulated communications between fans (Fiske, 1983: 85). Interactivity within the TV landscape is often associated with the viewers’ ability to turn from passive consumers into active producers of content that “adds” to the televised narrative but does not change it (Hassapopoulou, 2010: 48). This distinction usually does not to take into account that even when viewers are passively sitting on their couch watching soap operas, their minds are still actively engaged in making sense of the narratives and relationships.

The list is available below and on the OIF website, and you can find more information in the ALA press release about the 2008 list. The children’s book, And Tango Makes Three, by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, remains at the top of the list for the third year in a row. Tango still faces frequent chal- lenges for reasons that include religious viewpoint, homosexuality, and age appropriate- ness. The Office received a total of 513 challenges in 2008, up from 420 total challenges in 2007. For every challenge reported to OIF, however, it is estimated that there are four or five challenges that go unreported. Writing for girls has been traditionally placed beneath ‘more serious’ literature, within a hierarchal model, while modern works enjoy an iconic status that is the product of cross-media popularity and a wide readership. Criticism has focused on post-millennial girl fiction being unwholesome, poorly written or anti-feminist, examination of the texts reveals personas which girls may use to explore, rebel against and critically examine societal expectations and fears about girlhood. To explore the publishing phenomenon surrounding current girls’ fiction I use two sample series: Gossip Girl by Cecily Von Ziegesar and Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. Chapter One contrasts current girl’s fiction with texts written about girlhood, followed with an analysis of the good-girl and bad-girl archetypes which are developed within the two groups of texts. I then consider the stylistic and structural elements presented within the fiction and the impact such elements may have on the girl public. In the conclusion, I consider the wider societal impacts of post-millennial girl fiction through social media, extended readership, cross-media influence and the responses of girl readers.

GOSSIP GIRL VOICE Spotted on the New Haven Line. Headed towards Manhattan. An eerily beautiful blonde... INT. AMTRAK TRAIN -- MAGIC HOUR A FACE pressed against the glass. One of the most beautiful faces you’ve ever seen. But the first thing you notice is the soulfulness behind this girl’s gaze. Meet -- SERENA VAN DER WOODSEN, 17. GOSSIP GIRL VOICE Long pale hair. Dark blue eyes. Is it possible. Is Serena back? Another GIRL, 17, walks down the aisle. Then she sees Serena. Freezes, staring. Like she’s seen a movie star. Serena turns - sensing she’s being watched. The GIRL moves quickly. Head down. But as she goes, she whips out her SIDEKICK. Cop shows have guns. Medical shows have scalpels. This show has SIDEKICKS. The girl’s thumbs fly across the keys. She hits SEND: VARIOUS SHOTS OF -- SIDEKICKS. LAPTOPS. CELL PHONES. TEENAGERS passing a VIRUS OF GOSSIP. From CENTRAL PARK to the shops of MADISON AVENUE.
