TRANSCRIPT OF INTERVIEW WITH ACTOR, WRITER, AND DIRECTOR NICK CASSAVETES DREAMPATH PODCAST, EPISODE 46 May 6, 2020 Host: Bryan Smith [00:00:00] Nick Cassavetes: Love is everything. The rest of it, there's nothing else that matters. The rest of life is bullshit only love. So if you have a point of view of what you're actually trying to make, especially with an experienced actor, they know what you want. And then it gives them freedom to like, not make choices that are out of the director's comfort zone. And they can do whatever the heck they want, you know? And, Even if you're the most technically gifted actor in the world, everybody always gets in trouble. Everybody always, there's something happens and you just try to be there and, you know, through a series of permission givings, make sure the actor's comfortable and that it's okay for him to dig deep and be as authentic as he can be. Bryan Smith: Brian Smith here and welcome to the DreamPath Podcast, where I try to get inside the heads of talented creatives from all over the world. My goal is to demystify and humanize the creative process, and make it accessible to everyone. Now let's jump in. [00:01:00] Nick Cassavetes is on the show today. Nick is an actor, screenwriter and director. Nick's dad, John Cassavetes, was a pioneer of independent cinema in the 70s and 80s, writing and directing classics like Gloria and Woman Under the Influence, both starring Nick's mother, Gina Rowlands.

  • Jesse James Hollywood's Murder Trial Opens
Los Angeles Times - May 16, 2009 Jesse James Hollywood’s Murder Trial Opens Former fugitive could face the death penalty. The slaying of a West Hills boy inspired movie “Alpha Dog” By Steve Chawkins, Reporting From Santa Barbara Nine years after the slaying of a 15-year-old West Hills boy, Jesse James Hollywood faced a jury on Friday that will determine whether he's guilty in the crime that inspired the 2007 film "Alpha Dog." Prosecutors allege that Hollywood masterminded the kidnapping and murder of Nicholas Markowitz to avenge a $1,200 drug debt owed by his half brother. If convicted, he could face the death penalty. In his opening statement, Santa Barbara County Deputy Dist. Atty. Joshua Lynn described Hollywood, now 29, as "a ruthless coward."But Hollywood's attorney portrayed him as meticulous and intelligent, a young man who had sold "small quantities" of marijuana but had nothing to do with ordering Nicholas' death. "He's no angel," said James Blatt, "but he's not a powerful Manson-esque individual that somehow controls his crew and gets them to do his bidding."Hollywood, a high school baseball player turned San Fernando Valley drug dealer, was not present on the August night when Nicholas was marched up to a Santa Barbara climbing spot called Lizard's Mouth, beaten on the head with a shovel, shot nine times and buried in a shallow grave. But the prosecutor said he was a cold-blooded manipulator, directing the boy's execution in the style of an NFL coach "barking orders on the sidelines." Four others have been convicted in the crime.

  • ALPHA DOG” PROJECT Los Angeles Daily Journal, October 14, 2005
DA WAS ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT “ALPHA DOG” PROJECT Los Angeles Daily Journal, October 14, 2005 Leslie Simmons, Daily Journal Staff Writer LOS ANGELES - Santa Barbara prosecutor Ronald J. Zonen was "enthusiastic" about a movie project based on the killing of West Hills teen Nicholas Markowitz, and said he wanted to write a book about the case, according to a court declaration given by the film's screenwriter and director. "Mr. Zonen agreed to assist us with the screenplay," stated Nick Cassavetes, the creative force behind the film "Alpha Dog." "At times, I consulted with him about the specifics of the case." "Alpha Dog" stars Bruce Willis, Sharon Stone and Justin Timberlake and is based on Markowitz's murder and the alleged mastermind of the killing, Jesse James Hollywood. Encino attorney James Blatt, who represents Hollywood, 25, filed Cassavetes' declaration in Santa Barbara County Superior Court last week. Zonen could not be reached for comment. Last month, Blatt filed a motion to recuse the Santa Barbara County district attorney's office from prosecuting the case, claiming Zonen's involvement in the film was not only a conflict of interest but also a misdemeanor. He has asked the attorney general's office to prosecute Hollywood, who was apprehended in March in Brazil after being on the lam for five years. In response to Blatt's motion, the district attorney's office admitted Zonen may have committed a misdemeanor but it should not disqualify him from the trial. It is a misdemeanor for a state Justice Department employee to disclose evidence to a person not authorized by law to receive it.

  • Infamous West Valley Murder Comes to Big Screen
Los Angeles Daily News, January 7, 2007 INFAMOUS WEST VALLEY MURDER COMES TO BIG SCREEN By FRED SHUSTER, Staff Writer The victim's parents just want it over with, and most of the three dozen witnesses are trying to forget what they saw. But among others, there's still fascination about the kidnapping and murder of 15-year-old Nicholas Markowitz West Hills -- a case that spawned national news coverage, an international hunt for the suspected mastermind and, now, a mainstream movie. ``It's still talked about,'' said Boyd Ingram, 29, of Woodland Hills, who knew some of the defendants in the high-profile murder case. ``When something comes up in the news, and now with the movie coming out, it'll be talked about a lot more.'' Set for release Friday, ``Alpha Dog'' is a pseudo-documentary inspired by the case of Jesse James Hollywood, a small-time thug accused of ordering Nick kidnapped and killed over a $1,200 drug debt owed by the teen's older half-brother, Ben. The film -- written and directed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Bruce Willis, Justin Timberlake and Sharon Stone -- has sparked conflict in the courtroom over its depiction of the events that shook an upscale West San Fernando Valley neighborhood. ``The movie is the prosecutor's theory of the case, based on their own files,'' said attorney James Blatt of Encino, who is representing Hollywood in the death-penalty case. ``This is an exact duplication of the times, the events and the dialogue of what transpired, based on the case files.'' In October, Blatt persuaded a judge to oust Santa Barbara County prosecutor Ron Zonen from the case because he'd served as the primary consultant for ``Alpha Dog.'' ``When a prosecutor in a pending case releases his entire file to a motion picture company and becomes a consultant, there is a conflict of interest,'' Blatt said.

  • Murder Case Is Like a Movie, and That May Be a Problem
USA Today, March 27, 2006 Murder case is like a movie, and that may be a problem By Martin Kasindorf, USA TODAY LOS ANGELES - The kidnapping and murder of 15-year-old Nick Markowitz in 2000 was true-crime story that had "soon to be a major motion picture" practically written all over it. The tragedy had a young victim, a manhunt for the kidnapper and a ring of middle-class 20-somethings who sold marijuana in the San Fernando Valley. Alpha Dog, a $13 million movie with a cast including Justin Timberlake, Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone, is based on the slaying in Santa Barbara, Calif. It's ready for release. But the film is now entangled in the criminal case against a defendant with a name that no screenwriter would dare make up: Jesse James Hollywood. Hollywood, 26, has petitioned the California Supreme Court to remove the Santa Barbara County district attorney's office from the case for "unprecedented misconduct" in giving non-public case files to filmmaker Nick Cassavetes. Defense lawyer James Blatt says he'll ask another court to block New Line Cinema from releasing the "inflammatory" movie until after Hollywood's death-penalty trial later this year. The studio had scheduled the opening for April but now says it will choose a date this spring "to be determined." Alpha Dog got mixed reviews at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, in January. ‘Rebel, anti-authority image' Hollywood was indicted for allegedly being the leader of a drug gang and orchestrating Markowitz's killing.
