The Commissioner’s and Germann Cups For the eighth time in school and conference history and the second-consecutive year, Appalachian State Univer- sity is the winner of both the Southern Conference’s Commissioner’s and Germann Cups, presented annually to the league’s top all-around men’s and women’s all-sports programs. Appalachian is the only school in SoCon history to win both the Commissioner’s Cup and Germann Cup in the same year, a feat it has now accomplished eight times. Prior to last season, it last won both awards in 1991-92. The Commissioner’s Cup is the 28th overall and 23rd in the last 24 years for the Mountaineers’ vaunted men’s pro- grams. Conference championships in football, cross country, indoor track & field and the North Division championship in men’s basketball paced the Apps to 86.5 points, 16 points ahead of second-place UNC Greensboro. The Germann Cup is the eighth overall and just second in 15 years for the Mountaineer women. A league champi- onship in indoor track and field and second-place showings in volleyball, cross country and outdoor track & field led the way to 70 points for the Apps. ASU finished in the top-two in four of the SoCon’s nine women’s sports to beat out Furman by 2.5 points.

-35- 2007- 08 Appalachian Track and Field Mountaineers in the Community

Like the entire Appalachian State University athletics department, Mountaineer track and field and cross country programs believe strongly in giving back to the community. “We want to give back to the community as much as possible,” Appalachian head coach John Weaver said. “We are fortunate to be given many opportunities to help reach out to the community, whether it be visiting schools or helping with blood drives.” The Appalachian track and field and cross country teams have been a constant in the community, doing work with local elementary schools and at blood drives. Within the past couple of years, the Mountaineer cross country program with assistance from private funding and the ASU Physical Plant, has developed a cross country trail on lands owned by the university at the State Farm Fields. The Kennedy Trails, named for the 1970 ASU graduate and the first nationally recognized ASU distance runner Donald Kennedy, were dedi- cated on October 13, 2006. The trails are used as a course for the ASU cross country teams, but are also open to the public to help provide a safe and pleasing environment to exercise.

Academics Academics are the primary reason for attending college, and Appalachian State University is one of the most respected comprehensive institutions of higher learning in the South. The academic environment that surrounds Appalachian is prided on fitting the needs of all students, regardless of background. The student-athletes of ASU who compete on a variety of playing fields take pride in their academic reputation. Through the overall efforts of the Learning Assistance Program, the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes is coordinated by Jean Roberts. Assistant coor- dinators Kim Sherill, Eric Hart and Stefanie Whitworth help to guide the office’s efforts for the more than 500 student-athletes who wear the black and gold. The Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes helps students prioritize academics by providing a comprehensive support system throughout their college careers. The overall graduation rate of student-athletes on campus has consistently remained higher than that of the Appalachian total student body. Approximately 35 percent of all student-athletes at ASU made the Southern Conference Honor Roll in The 2005 men’s cross country team the 2006-07 academic year. earned the USCCCA team academic The people of Appalachian State University are very proud of the academic award. acheivements of their student-athletes and applaud the teamwork of the adminis- tration and their relationships with the coaches whose support is pivotal in helping shape athletes’ academic lives. The University’s Learning Assistance Program is a valuable aid to student-ath- letes at Appalachian. From tutoring, to academic advising and academic monitoring, the program affords the student-athlete the opportunity to excel both on the field and in the classroom. -36-
