Gershwin romance makes Beef & Boards debut INDIANAPOLIS – The Tony Award winning and Grammy Award nominated musical romance An American in Paris takes the stage at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre for the first time starting April 2. Beautifully based on the 1951 Academy Award winner for Best Picture that starred Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, An American in Paris brings breathtaking dance and music to the stage. Jerry Mulligan, a young American soldier, is doing his best to make it as a painter in the bustling city of Paris following the end of World War II. But when Jerry meets Lise, a young Parisian shop girl with her own secret, his life becomes complicated. The City of Light’s streets become a dancefloor for the music of George and Ira Gershwin, including great tunes like “I Got Rhythm,” “But Not for Me,” “Shall We Dance,” and “’S Wonderful.” Of the impressive 11 Tony Award nominations it received, An American in Paris won four, including Best Orchestrations. Jonathan Rose, who has been seen on the Beef & Boards stage in Man of La Mancha (Jose), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Ephraim), and A Beef & Boards Christmas, returns in the lead role of Jerry Mulligan. Newcomer Sophie Aknin stars as Lise Dassin. Austin Glen Jaccobs, who has performed at Beef & Boards as Flotsam in The Little Mermaid and in the ensemble of Elf, The Musical, returns as Adam Hochberg, Jerry’s friend and an injured veteran. Filled with dance as well as romance, An American in Paris is choreographed and directed by Ron Morgan, with musical direction by Terry Woods. Eddie Curry assists as book scenes director. In an effort to set American music apart from the mature and established European styles, American composers of the twentieth century wrote distinctive music reflecting the unique culture of their country. In particular, the trumpet is a prominent voice in this music. The purpose of this study is to identify the significance of the trumpet in the music of three renowned twentieth-century American composers. This document examines the “compositional” and “conceptual” Americanisms present in the music of George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, and Leonard Bernstein, focusing on the use of the trumpet as a voice depicting the compositional Americanisms of each composer. The versatility of its timbre allows the trumpet to stand out in a variety of contexts: it is heroic during lyrical, expressive passages; brilliant during festive, celebratory sections; and rhythmic during percussive statements. In addition, it is a lead jazz voice in much of this music. As a dominant voice in a variety of instances, the trumpet expresses the American character of each composer’s music.

Doctoral Dissertations. 2172. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/2172 Abstract Music in Motion Interpreting Musical Structure through Choreography in Gershwin’s An American in Paris Spencer Matthew Reese, D.M.A. University of Connecticut, 2019 This dissertation explores the relationship between the theoretic interpretation of music (through analysis of a score) and the kinesthetic interpretation of it (through dance). While compelling choreography often evokes the same expressive qualities as a score, music and dance each have expressive and structural components. This study looks beyond expressive unity to examine how formal elements of a musical score are embodied in a choreographic interpretation of it. George Gershwin’s now-iconic symphonic poem An American in Paris, while conceived as concert music, was almost immediately interpreted in dance onstage. It also inspired larger narrative works, including a film choreographed by Gene Kelly and a musical helmed by Christopher Wheeldon. When a score is written for dance, the logistical considerations of choreography likely influence the piece’s composition. But in the case of Paris, the structural details of the music itself have consistently given artists the impression that it is danceable. Gershwin’s life and musical style are examined, including his synthesis of popular and Western art music.

    Irving Berlin born Israel Isidore Baline Irving Berlin was born in Tyumen, Russia, on May 11, 1888, and immigrated to New York as a child. He would become one of the most popular songwriters in the United States, with hits like "Alexander's Ragtime Band," “God Bless America,” " Blue Skies,” “What’ll I Do" and "White Christmas." Berlin's film and Broadway musical work included Puttin’ on the Ritz, Easter Parade and Annie Get Your Gun. He died in New York City on September 22, 1989, at age 101. Irving Berlin was born Israel Baline on May 11, 1888, in the village of Tyumen, Russia. His family fled to escape the region's persecution of the Jewish community and settled in New York City in the mid-1890s. As a teen, Baline worked as a street singer, and by 1906 he had become a singing waiter in Chinatown. His first published tune was 1907's "Marie From Sunny Italy," with Nick Nicholson penning the music. As the lyricist, Baline's name was misspelled as "I. Berlin" on the sheet music.     Programme Note by Chris Darwin: please use freely for non-commercial purposes George Gershwin (1898-1937 An American in Paris (1928) Music only started to impact on George Gershwin's life when he was 12 and the family bought a piano for his elder brother Ira. Ira (the future lyricist) wasn't interested, but George was. His piano teacher took him to concerts and at 15 he dropped out of school and worked as a song plugger for a firm on Tin Pan Alley, playing and singing their songs to prospective clients. He composed in his spare time. He moved to being a Broadway rehearsal pianist, was retained as a composer by Harms publishers and in 1918 composed his first musical La La Lucille. Two years later Al Jolson recorded Swanee, bringing Gershwin $10,000 in royalties in the first year. On the classical side, he studied harmony, counterpoint and orchestration with a number of teachers including the avant garde Henry Cowell, wrote a string quartet as an exercise, and in 1924, commissioned by band leader Paul Whiteman and inspired by riding the train from New York to Boston, he wrote Rhapsody in Blue for two pianos. It was orchestrated by Ferde Grofé, but its famous glissando was a whim of the clarinettist at the first rehearsal. In early 1928 Gershwin met Ravel in New York, taking him to hear Duke Ellington, and asked Ravel to teach him. Ravel declined, allegedly saying 'Why become a second-rate Ravel when you're already a first-rate Gershwin?'. On hearing how much money Gershwin earned Ravel produced a counter-proposal: that he study with Gershwin.

In order to understand the reading of camp into these endings one must examine the ways in which American film musicals subvert hegemonic relationship sanctions. This subversion takes place through the allowance of female agency via musical performance, the abundance of gender play, the presentation of alternative family structures specifically through the glorification of communal living, and the possibility for alternative masculinities.
