2016 PINOT GRIS Russian River Valley Estate Grown ● Estate Bottled Texture and persistence define this Pinot Gris. It’s focused with bright fruit and crisp acidity yet still maintains a powerful weight and presence throughout. Aromatically, the wine opens with stone fruit and citrus surrounded with savory elements. The mouthfeel is a contrast of zingy lime, perfect viscosity and subtle tannins that add texture and extend the wine for an incredible and lengthy finish, both in terms of texture and flavor. The grapes are grown on a magnificent eight acre vineyard located about 10 miles from the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean. This Sebastopol Hills vineyard, planted exclusively to Pinot Gris, slopes toward the south and allows for excellent exposure and produces distinct and precise Pinot Gris. Balletto Vineyards makes all of its wine from sustainably farmed estate vineyards located throughout the cool southern third of the Russian River Valley. It is one of the few Russian River wineries to be 100 percent estate grown and estate bottled, and specializes in vineyard designated Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which are consistently elegant, balanced and delicious. Pinot Gris Winemaking Philosophy: Pinot Gris is the close cousin to the famed Pinot Noir, with only small mutations to Technical Information make bronze-colored grapes as opposed to black (noir). 2014 Seven (White Blend)
2014 SEVEN (WHITE BLEND) Tasting Notes: A refreshing and complex wine that appeals to all. Aromas of lemongrass, melon and pear lead into a velvety mid palate that is lightly sweetened. This is offset by juicy acidity which leads into a lingering finish with notes of pineapple. Winemaking Notes: This wine is made from a blend of seven white grapes. In order to help preserve the individual characteristics of those grapes each piece of the wine is fermented separately to be made into a single varietal then a portion of each of those wines is used to make this wine. Blending trials generally last for six to eight weeks while we create the best wine possible balancing not only the characteristics of each varietal, not letting any one grape dominate, but also balancing the acidity and sweetness so the wine remains refreshing while appealing to a variety of palates. This year was fun to blend as for the first time all seven grapes came from our estate vineyard. BeckenRidge vineyard is also represented in the Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot gris. The seven grapes in order of most to least are: Müller Thurgau, Pinot gris, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot blanc, Muscat Ottonel. Harvest Notes: The 2014 growing season is the warmest on record for the Willamette Valley. Our cooler estate vineyard on the edge of the Oregon Coast Range welcomed the few extra degrees of heat like a light summer blanket rather than a blistering heat wave at the end of the season. The extra warmth led to early sugar accumulation and then, fortunately, we received a small amount of rain prior to harvest.

I generally don’t deal with anything heavier than a cup of tea at 8:45 in the morning. But...this was the hour assigned me for dealing with the subject of “ e Emergence of Pinot gris”. Originally I was to have shared this time with two other Oregon producers of Pinot gris in order to ﬁ ll the hour, so you will be relieved to know that my comments will not go for the full hour this morning. Actually, Pinot gris is still in its “emergence” stage both in terms of the number of acres planted and marketability, but I will attempt to ﬁ ll in as many details of as many aspects of Pinot gris that I know of from having grown it for 27 years. For starters let me give you a bit of history of the Pinot gris vine in Europe and the U.S. e origins of Pinot gris are apparently to be found in the Burgundy region of France where it is known as Pinot Beurot. It used to be widely interplanted among Pinot noir and was used in the Pinot noir to soften its sometimes rough edges. ere are at least two producers of Pinot gris (or Beurot) that I know of in Burgundy today. One is Phillipe Senard who I believe labels it simply as Savigny-les-Beaune Blanc. Pinot gris was also grown in the Champagne region.
