Sociopathetic abscess or yawning chasm? The absent postcolonial transition in Doctor Who Lindy A Orthia The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia Abstract This paper explores discourses of colonialism, cosmopolitanism and postcolonialism in the long-running television series, Doctor Who. Doctor Who has frequently explored past colonial scenarios and has depicted cosmopolitan futures as multiracial and queer- positive, constructing a teleological model of human history. Yet postcolonial transition stages between the overthrow of colonialism and the instatement of cosmopolitan polities have received little attention within the program. This apparent ‘yawning chasm’ — this inability to acknowledge the material realities of an inequitable postcolonial world shaped by exploitative trade practices, diasporic trauma and racist discrimination — is whitewashed by the representation of past, present and future humanity as unchangingly diverse; literally fixed in happy demographic variety. Harmonious cosmopolitanism is thus presented as a non-negotiable fact of human inevitability, casting instances of racist oppression as unnatural blips. Under this construction, the postcolonial transition needs no explication, because to throw off colonialism’s chains is merely to revert to a more natural state of humanness, that is, cosmopolitanism. Only a few Doctor Who stories break with this model to deal with the ‘sociopathetic abscess’ that is real life postcolonial modernity. In 2006 the BBC launched two spin-off series, Torchwood (aimed at an exclusively adult audience) and The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures (for 11–15-year-olds), and what was once regarded as an embarrass- ment to the Corporation now spans the media landscape as a multi-format colossus. -

Adventures in Time and Sound: Leitmotif and Repetition in Doctor Who by Emilie Hurst A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2015 Emilie Hurst ii Abstract This thesis explores the intersections between repetition, leitmotif and the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze in the context the BBC television series Doctor Who (1963-1989; 2005- ). Deleuze proposes that instead of the return of the same, repetition, by its constant insertion in a new temporal context can produce difference as part of the process of the eternal return. He also rejects the concepts of being in favour of becoming. I argue his framework on repetition allows us to broaden the definition of the leitmotif and embrace the role of repetition. I analyse the leitmotif of three characters: Amy Pond, River Song, and the Doctor. In all three instances, the leitmotifs are an active participant in the process of becoming while, simultaneously, undergoing their own becoming. For River, the leitmotif also works as a territorializing refrain, while for the Doctor, use of leitmotif paradoxically gives the impression of being. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my advisors Alexis Luko and James Deaville for providing me with guidance along the way, as well as Paul Théberge who stepped in the final month to help me re- organize my thoughts. When Doctor Who returned to television, the BBC advertised the show with a particularly punchy trailer including a fireball special effect, and Christopher Eccleston saying of the new series: “It’s not quiet, it’s not safe, and it’s not calm.” The same can be said for the music by Murray Gold. It’s not quiet; the music is not occasional or ‘incidental’—it’s an integral layer. Melody and dialogue happen at the same time. It’s not safe; there are over 30 identifiable musical motifs in the first 13 episodes. Half of the motifs are used in more than one episode, and most actively support story arcs. You can’t create that many pieces of musical composition over 10 hours of broadcast and get them all completely right. There are a few missteps. It’s not calm; the styles used stretch from Euro-technopop to opera, Philip Glass to Latin dance. It’s not the same as the old Doctor Who music, and it is wonderful. Scoring Who There are four types of music presented in Doctor Who in its 21st century incarnation. The first is the overall series theme, functionally the same as its initial creation in 1963. The general frame of the theme as devised by Ron Grainer, Delia Darbyshire, and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop is so recognizable by people all over the world—including many who have never watched the show—that there would be no possibility of changing the melody; interpretation is restricted to instrumentation and percussion choices and the resulting mood choices highlighted by each re-mix. -

PREVIOUSLY ON The Constant, the Variable, and the Bad Wolf in Lost and Doctor Who Kristine Larsen Today’s science fiction television audience comprehends the basic science behind time travel and parallel universes thanks to the popular writings (and television documentaries) of scientists such as Stephen Hawking, Brian Greene, and Michio Kaku. In response, the writers of such series as Doctor Who and Lost use this science in a fairly consistent way, keeping their time travel as “realistic” as possible while at the same time entertaining their loyal yet discriminating audiences. The two series certainly differ in what defines consistency in time travel, and what liberties may be taken with these rules within the canon of the series. However, each series has a human wildcard, a character who appears to bend or supersede the rules: Rose Tyler (companion to the Ninth and Tenth Doctors) and Desmond David Hume (named for the 18th century philosopher) respectively. While these variables are able to move between timelines and even parallel universes with an ease inaccessible to fellow characters, they must rely upon constants (in the form of other characters, items, and actions) in order to remain grounded within the dizzying world of time travel. This essay will explore the intersections between science and science fiction in the respective travels of Desmond, Rose, and their accompanying characters, focusing on the skillful navigation of the series writers and viewers through the various paradoxes scientists warn are inherent in any attempt to change the past within the confines of a single universe. The basis for our current scientific understanding of time travel is the work of Albert Einstein, whose 1915 General Theory of Relativity demonstrated that what we experience as the force of gravity is actually the warping of four-dimensional space-time by mass and energy. -
