I Newsletter I June 2021 I A bi-monthly update published by the Yorkshire RFU Welcome from Tony McNally - President of the Yorkshire Rugby Football Union We start on a sad note as we send our condolences to Henry Fosters family and friends. Henry had the honour of representing Yorkshire at U15-U18 level and it is a great loss to our rugby family that we have lost one so young. We all should now be getting back into the swing of returning back to our clubs. I know some teams have started training and played some adapted games. As we know, it is also the end of the season and we can continue on with the RFU roadmap in line with Governments’ staged return It is important that during the summer months we engage with our rugby family and prepare for our return to playing rugby next season. Further information regarding financial support will follow in this newsletter. Your districts will also advise of district meetings and events that will be taking place. South Yorkshire district will be holding the value the volunteer evening held over from last year to present last year’s winners with their awards and hopefully get to meet old friends and new. A lot of clubs will be holding summer events, it is important we support our clubs and get back to some kind of normality. Yorkshire Archaeological Research Framework: resource assessment A report prepared for the Yorkshire Archaeological Research Framework Forum and for English Heritage – project number 2936 RFRA S. Roskams and M. Whyman (Department of Archaeology, University of York) 2005 ABSTRACT This report represents the outcome of research undertaken into the archaeological resources of Yorkshire, using data gathered by SMRs, museums and commercial contractors. It describes the background to the project and its objectives, and the methods used to draw evidence from these diverse sources into a single database. It then proceeds to describe patterning in the data thus collected and collated, first at a general level across the region, then on a chronological basis from the Palaeolithic to Early Modern periods. In each period, the implications of this patterning for archaeological understanding of Yorkshire are drawn out. Children's Developing Awareness of Regional Accents
Children’s developing awareness of regional accents: A socioperceptual investigation of pre-school and primary school children in York Ella Rose Webb Jeffries PhD University of York Language and Linguistic Science April 2016 Abstract This thesis explores children’s developing awareness of regional accents, a relatively under- researched area of socioperceptual work. A series of four experiments are run with children in York between the ages of 2 and 9. These experiments are designed in order to investigate the process by which children progress from the ability to recognise familiar speakers to the ability to group speakers according to their regional accent. The Identification experiment establishes pre-school children’s ability to recognise familiar speakers, while the Recognition experiment finds that features of a familiar speaker’s accent forms part of the recognition process. The Grouping experiment goes on to investigate pre-school children’s ability to group speaker guises according to phonological regional variables based on a Yorkshire/Standard Southern British English (SSBE) accent distinction. Finally, the Second Grouping experiment explores older, primary school children’s ability to group different speakers according to phonological regional variables based on different accent distinctions (Yorkshire/SSBE, Yorkshire/Scottish and Yorkshire/North East). Throughout these experiments, independent variables relating to the children’s backgrounds are found to play a role in their abilities in the tasks. Generally, the girls perform better than the boys and there is an improvement throughout the ages. Furthermore, the children’s exposure to regional variation is found to significantly affect their performance in the Grouping and the Second Grouping experiments. -

The WOLDSMAN DRUFC Newsletter April 2017 Wow, what a turn-around the 1st XV has had. Since Christmas they have lost only 1 game; on their visit to Huddersfield YMCA. They currently lie 6th in North One East, 4 points behind Bradford & Bingley, and 5 ahead of Percy Park. Since the Christmas break they have beaten Malton, Dinnington, Bradford & Bingley and Wheatley Hills at Kelleythorpe, and returned with points from Guisborough, Percy Park and Penrith. The draw at Penrith cemented our place in North One East for next season, a great effort by all. The final 3 games see us entertain Durham City (Sat 1st), make the trip to Alnwick (Sat 8th) and welcome Morpeth (Sat 22nd). I’m sure Bash, Coops and the team will be pushing to try and get that 5th position. In the league, Pocklington are on the brink of promotion to the National Leagues. A win at West Hartlepool (1st Apr) will see them win the league. I’m sure everyone at Driffield will congratulate Pocklington on a great season, and wish them all the best for next season. The fight for second is still tight; West Hartlepool currently occupies that position, but sit only 5 points ahead of Penrith, who are just 1 ahead of Alnwick. Whoever makes the play-off looks to be heading to Birkenhead Park to fight for a position in National Two North. At the bottom, Wheatley Hills and Guisborough’s rough season is nearly over and they are already relegated. The fight for the remaining position is still open; mathematically 6 teams could still face the drop, but is most likely to be between Durham City and Dinnington. -
