Sibbel Bachelor of Arts (Psychology, First Class Honours) Diploma of Teaching (Primary) A Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Computing, Health and Science Edith Cowan University June 2010 USE OF THESIS The Use of Thesis statement is not included in this version of the thesis. iii Abstract Using a concurrent multi-methods design employing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies this study investigated the psychosocial wellbeing Western Australian fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) mining employees and their partners. The quantitative phase of the study assessed the psychological wellbeing, relationship satisfaction and perceptions of family function of 90 FIFO mining employees and 32 partners of FIFO employees using the General Health Questionnaire 12, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale and the Family Assessment Device. Analyses revealed that both FIFO employees and their partners are within the norms for healthy functioning on the scales and sub-scales of the measures of psychological wellbeing, relationship satisfaction and perceptions of family function, and that there were no statistically significant differences between the scores of the two groups on any of these measures. Further, there were no significant differences when data were analysed according to family type or profile of absence. Thus, despite perceptions that regular FIFO employment related absence would have adverse impacts on various aspects of wellbeing, the group of FIFO employees and partners in this study report similar levels of psychological wellbeing, relationship satisfaction and perceptions of family function to those of the general Australian population. The qualitative phase used constructivist grounded theory methodology to explore the experiences of FIFO employees and partners of FIFO employees in order to develop an understanding and theoretical scheme of the role of contextual factors in their adaptation to the FIFO lifestyle. In-depth interviews were conducted with a medium sized sample of 16 FIFO employees and 12 partners of FIFO employees. The findings from the qualitative phase are discussed in light of existing literature and the findings from the quantitative phase. The data revealed a number of individual, family, community and workplace factors that impact on individual experiences of and adaptation to the FIFO lifestyle. Informants generally made purposeful and informed choices to undertake FIFO employment based on the notion that “the benefits outweigh the costs”, that the lifestyle associated with FIFO employment would considerably increase individual and family access to financial and psychosocial resources, and that the net gains in personal and family resources would outweigh any losses. These findings challenge earlier presumptions that the regular absences associated with FIFO employment would result in a loss of individual and family resources and would impact negatively on the iv psychosocial wellbeing of FIFO employees and their partners. The strengths and limitations of the study are outlined as are suggestions for future research.     Research Report 49 Schooling in Aurukun John McCollow1 Abstract The remote Aboriginal community of Aurukun recently made national headlines when teachers were withdrawn for approximately the last four weeks of semester one after the school principal was twice assaulted by local youths. Commentaries on the incident included some from prominent educators and the local federal member of parliament that implicated the education model used in the school as contributing to the problems in the community. The school is a campus of the Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy (CYAAA), an initiative of controversial Aboriginal activist, Noel Pearson. In the wake of these criticisms the Queensland education minister announced a review of the schooling in Aurukun. The results of the review – conducted by the School Improvement Unit of the Department of Education and Training (DET) – were published on 5 July. Schooling is set to recommence in Aurukun from the beginning of semester two (11 July). This paper provides a summary of some of the issues that arise from the operation of the CYAAA. It concludes that the recent turmoil in the Aurukun community tells us little one way or the other about the efficacy of the educational model employed at local school. As a noteworthy and controversial initiative in the important area of Aboriginal education, however, the operation of the CYAAA deserves to be the subject of ongoing examination and review. A definitive assessment of the CYAAA is fraught with complexities and difficulties and simplistic pronouncements from both supporters and critics of the academy have been less than helpful. The DET report, on the other hand, identifies that there are some significant problems with the way in which the school is currently operating and provides a useful starting point for improvement.

    AUSTRALIAN HIP HOP’S MULTI- 13/ CULTURAL LITERACIES / A SUBCULTURE EMERGES INTO THE LIGHT / TONY MITCHELL uch has been written in recent years about the relationship between hip hop Mculture, pedagogy and youth literacies in an African-American context (Ibrahim 2003; Dimitriades 2004; Ginwright 2004; Richardson 2006). However, hip hop is also being used increasingly in the broader educational contexts of language learning and popular culture studies both in the US and throughout the rest of the world. Hip Hop Studies is now a discipline taught in US universities (Forman & Neal 2004) and is gradually spreading to educational contexts in other parts of the world. In Hiphop literacies, Elaine Richardson (2006) argues for “the depth, the importance, and the immediate necessity of acknowledging one of the most contemporary, accessible, and contentious of African American literacies, Hiphop literacies” (p.xv). She sets out to locate hip hop discourses “within a trajectory of Black discourses” and to consider hip hop as an oral and semiotic form of discourse, analysing “rap music and song lyrics, electronic and digital media, including video games, music videos, telecommunication 231 SOUNDS OF THEN, SOUNDS OF NOW / POPULAR MUSIC IN AUSTRALIA devices, magazines, ‘Hip hop’ novels, oral performances, and cinema” (Richardson 2006, p.xvi). Richardson’s study is restricted by two major limitations. Apart from looking at the use of African-American language in online German hip hop sites, neither considers the indigenising global spread of hip hop beyond the boundaries of African-American vernacular cultures, nor the non-linguistic but fundamentally semiotic aspects of hip hop such as beatboxing, DJing, breakdancing and graffiti writing, which are arguably of equal importance to MCing as hip hop literacies.

To the best of my knowledge and belief, this thesis contains no material previously published by any person except where due acknowledgement has been made. ii Abstract Aboriginal students will often approach their teacher with the biggest and most beautiful smile. That smile, if it could be verbalised, asks the teacher to ‘learn me’. Non-Aboriginal teachers may find that crossing cultural borders, between their own worldview and that of the Aboriginal students’ can be a challenging and frightening experience, so much so that they may not see the open smile and desire to learn from the Aboriginal student. I have been fortunate to have experienced crossing multiple cultural borders with Aboriginal people using an Aboriginal form of the Third Space (Bhabar, 1994) based on the lived experience of Scott Fatnowna who is the creator of this teaching and learning model. This model is designed to cause positive change between Aboriginal Australians and non-Aboriginal Australians through understanding each other’s worldview by working and learning together with equal power and cross cultural dialogue. The model also resonates with the Ganma metaphor (Yolgnu people from the Northern Territory). This study investigates, through an autoethnographic narrative and participant interviews, what ‘learn me’ may mean for teachers with Aboriginal students in the classroom.
