Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC.

Keywords: comics; Judge Anderson; Judge Dredd; judgment; visual jurisprudence 1 This judgment is based upon ‘evidence’ derived from the comics series of Judge Dredd and Judge Anderson, both of 2000AD fame. Judge Dredd was first published in the UK in 1977 as a satirical response to the right wing politics its creators saw as problematic [14, 35, 18]. It has since evolved into a highly popular on-going series. Judge Anderson was created as a spin-off series from Judge Dredd, and involves a number of interesting tensions with the masculine, authoritarian narrative world of the initial series. It is the exploration of these seemingly binary tensions, and the substantive issues raised by the series’ judicial context, that precipitated the format of this paper as a judgment, with Anderson’s fluid, psychic, feminine world bringing critical challenges to the dominant rational ideologies and epistemologies of law and justice embodied in Dredd.

Finally the collected AndersonBy Lisa SinclairI've been waiting more than 10 years for a proper collected Judge Anderson book to come out. And here, finally, it is.Except, it's *almost* complete -- missing only Shambhalla (which I can almost excuse as this is a colour-inked adventure rather than monochrome like the rest of this volume). It's a small gripe to be sure, as the missing adventure is still available as a standalone. As a good-quality female comic hero, Judge Anderson is one of the best. Sometimes she's drawn a little over-sexed for my liking (with the exception of Arthur Ranson's photo-realistic work), but the writing is great -- even in early adventures like "The possessed" she's given complex moral dilemmas to deal with -- and these keep mounting giving Anderson real character development.Quality-wise this volume can't really be faulted -- the artwork is nice and clean, the stories pretty-much all good (some of the earlier adventures are a bit simplistic, but this is to be expected; Anderson really didn't get complex until "Helios" and beyond).

It was magic when I met Steve Dillon and he gave me a sketch. It was magic when I met Steve Moore and we talked about fanzi- nes. It was magic when Tony Roche walked into Octo- con and showed me his fanzines. Magical moments, spread across time. Tinged with a tiny bit of sadness. I only learned that Steve Dillon had worked on a comic fanzine, and indeed that it had been his gateway to professional- ism, after he was lost in October this year. Steve Moore answered questions about fanzines, but the interview is not and never will be finished. 2 All intertwined. Even though I heard about Heroes Un- limited in 2008, and so the germination of this zine may have started then, it all came to a head in October 2016. Could we do a fanzine this year, get these histories out, a punishing deadline, yet at every step we seemed to get help and assistance to make it happen.
