Allen was named to the All-Skyland Conference, all-area, all-county and All-New Jersey Group 2 teams as a senior at Somerville High School, where he passed for 22 in 1997. He is single and resides in Long Beach, New York. FOOTBALL TEAM MANAGERS ERICA EMILY STANZIONE DEGAGLIA

The line returns two starters DE Dan Garay in sophomore end Dan Garay and sophomore tackle Ed Greene. Both developed quickly and solidly as freshmen in 2002.

Garay recorded 68 tackles and 6.5 sacks and led the team in blocked kicks with three. He has the speed, size and strength to make a big impact for the Pride in 2003. Garay, who was also a starter on the LB Renauld Hofstra Wrestling team, missed spring football with a knee injury. But the son of former Los Angeles Rams standout and Hofstra alumnus Williams Tony Garay has returned stronger and quicker than ever. Sophomore Stephen Bowen, who saw plenty of action in a reserve role last year, is the front-runner for the other starting end spot. Bowen, at 6-5, 261 pounds, has the size and quickness to give Hofstra a double-sided threat. Challenging the starting ends are sophomore Rashaad Pitt, who posted 12 tackles on special teams and as a reserve end last year, and junior Josh Reed, who tallied 14 tackles as a back-up end last season.

At tackle, Greene, who played in the middle between Garay and Shaun Kinsley, who has graduated, came up with 33 tackles as a fresh- man and filled the gap well at 6-2, 290 pounds. Junior Mickey Keene, who played in all 12 games and posted 22 tackles last year, will chal- lenge Greene. Junior Randy Stephens and freshman Cody Decker from Allentown, Pennsylvania, will be looking to crack the two-deep. LB Bill Hambrecht Linebackers The linebacker positions are the strength of the Pride defense, with all four starters returning. Led by senior All-America candidate Renauld Williams, classmates Tyree Johnson and Bill Hambrecht, and sopho- more Cole Haley, who showed last year that his future is bright, the Pride linebackers will raise eyebrows in 2003.

On the outside, Williams and Johnson will give opponents problems with their quickness and tenacity. Williams, a first team All-Atlantic 10 selection and a second team All-American, posted 114 tackles, 22.5 18 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY 2003 Outlook tackles for losses and a league-leading 15 sacks in 2002. Hambrecht, who trans- ferred to Hofstra from SS Carlton Bargman Rutgers in 2002, posted 84 tackles for the Pride last year and was a key factor in Hofstra’s four-game winning streak to close the season. Haley, who also finished with 84 tackles, was the team’s freshman of the year right from the start of training camp and proceeded to get better every game. Hambrecht will be backed up by junior Sean Perrotta (10 tackles), red-shirt fresh- man Joe Charchalis, and freshman D.J. Talvacchio, an All-New Jersey selection from Franklinville, New Jersey. Haley has sen- ior Larry Kelly, sophomore Anthony Yepez and freshman Justyn Davis, another all-state selection from Englewood, New Jersey, playing behind him. Secondary The secondary should also be strong and deep with the return of three starters, four if you count senior Vemba Bukula, the starting cornerback against Montana in the 2002 season opener, who was switched to running back due to injuries and ineligi- bility.

Leading the secondary are returning safety starters, junior James Glee, who posted 72 tackles, and

Junior Sean Brophy will challenge Prisby along with All-Florida newcomer Nick Brown from Kissimmee and All-Pennsylvania selection Jarred Meade from Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Colon will be challenged by sophomore Adam Dubiel, who was a long-snapper last year, and freshman Chris Durkin OG Brandon Newton from Centereach, New York.

20 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY 2003 Outlook Wide Receivers The wide receiver spot is probably the strongest and deepest area on the offense, with two senior starters and two junior starters returning. The receiving corps is led by senior All-Atlantic 10 selection Rick Bryant, who caught a team-high 67 passes for 793 yards and four touchdowns last year despite spending the first month of the season in a cast after breaking his wrist. Junior Isaac Irby, another newcomer to Hofstra last year, also impressed by hauling in 55 passes for 526 yards and four touch- downs. Senior Jamaal Perry, who plays inside with Irby, posted 50 receptions for 540 yards and two touchdowns while 6-5 junior Marques Colston (47-614-3), Hofstra’s biggest target, caught 47 passes for 614 yards and three touchdowns. The four starters give the Pride the most formidable receiving lineup in the A-10. WR Ricky Bryant The inside backups will be sophomores Devale Ellis, who only caught nine passes last year but showed great promise, Brian Wolman, and Nassau Community College WR Isaac Irby (NY) transfer Rahsheed Galloway. On the outside, sophomore Bob DePasquale and newcomers Matt Thomson from Englewood, Colorado, and Marquis Bonds from Orange, New Jersey, will be looking for playing time. Kicking Game As expected, the special teams play looked very strong in the spring. Junior punter Joe Nolan, who averaged 40.6 yards in 68 punts last year, made an early declaration for All-American con- sideration by averaging 54.3 yards per punt in four kicks in the Spring Game. Unfortunately, Nolan went under the knife in June for a small problem that suddenly became a big problem. A simple scope of the knee was expanded and his return for the 2003 season is in doubt. But Nolan’s backup, Niall Duggan, averaged 41 yards on two punts in the Spring Game and looks to be the starter heading into the season.

Junior kicker Chris Onorato, who hit on 15 of PK Chris Onorato 23 field goals and 31 of 32 extra points last sea- son, booted field goals of 47 and 40 yards in the WR Marques Colston Spring Game and appears to be in the best con- dition of his career. Duggan, who will back-up Onorato, and vice-versa, also made good on a 37-yard field goal attempt in the spring exhibi- tion.
