I look forward to welcoming you to the 55th annual conference of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Birmingham’s city centre on Wednesday 28th – Friday 30th June. The theme of the conference is ‘Opportunities and Challenges’. I hope to inspire the consultants of the future to look at the full scope of our speciality when considering their careers.

There are three pre-conference events with a limited number of places:

A two day cadaver workshop has been organised by Liviu Hanu-Cernat on Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th June. It will be based in the Surgical Training Centre, Coventry, and is sponsored by Stryker. The course is heavily subsidised and will include aspects of aesthetic facial surgery, orbital access, tm joint approaches including access to the condyle and condylar neck fractures, exposure of the upper facial skeleton via a coronal flap, calvarial bone harvesting and management of the frontal sinus.

Straumann are sponsoring a one day oral implantology workshop, to be held in Birmingham on Monday 26th June. The course will include pre-operative assessment including CADCAM techniques for implant positioning and surgical guide production, surgical approaches and techniques, a practical workshop with a variety of implant designs and an introduction to more advanced grafting techniques. Council 2017 Another one day implant course will be held on Tuesday 27th June, in Birmingham. The course will be led by Rob Banks and focusses on the more advanced techniques in oral implantology. The topics will include the use of ‘All on Four’ type reconstructions of President: Stephen Dover the edentulous jaws, sinus floor grafting, localised ridge augmentation and the use and Vice President: Ian C Martin placement of zygoma implants. There will be practical workshops for delegates to gain President Designate: Satyesh Parmar hands on experience of the equipment and implants.

Immediate Past President: Peter Brennan The conference starts on Wednesday morning 28th June. My colleague Andrew Monaghan Honorary Secretary: Austen T Smith will be delivering the President’s lecture on ‘The Evolving Management of Vascular Honorary Treasurer: Ian S Holland Anomalies’. There is a national shortage of surgeons willing to take on these challenging patients and therefore a real opportunity to develop and deliver a service.Throughout Editor: David A Mitchell the three days there are international speakers from America, Australia, India, Germany Chairman of Council: Patrick Magennis and Portugal, along with established UK experts, presenting keynote lectures on trauma management, facial deformity including cleft and craniofacial conditions, aesthetic Council members: surgery, paediatric maxillofacial surgery, reconstructive techniques including distraction, Robert P Bentley implantology. cranioplasty and tm joint surgery. There will be an update on Getting It Right First Time and a report on DFTs in OMFS. Kathleen Fan David J W Keith Recruitment of trainees into surgery is currently a significant challenge. Time has been set aside to discuss how best to manage this within our own specialty, including a debate on James A McCaul the need for, and alternatives to, two degrees. Sat Parmar will chair the session. Iain H McVicar Vinita Shekar Research has long been under-represented within OMFS. I have asked Professor Richard Shaw to present on the opportunities for clinical research in today’s NHS. Three Alistair Smyth who have done this will follow him, present their research and comment on the challenges Meera Thavarajah that they have faced. I hope that this session will inspire others to follow in their footsteps. Consultants and Specialists’ The Norman Rowe Lecture will be delivered by Professor Sir Keith Porter, Professor Representative: Robert J Banks of Clinical Traumatology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. He will discuss how Consultants and Specialists’ Deputy care of the critically injured in armed conflict has influenced civilian practice. Representative: Bhavin Visavadia Fellows in Training Representative: The social programme begins on the Wednesday evening with the President’s reception in Nabeela Ahmed the ICC. Entertainment will be in the form of a Caribbean Steel Band. The annual black tie dinner will be in the Birmingham Town Hall on Thursday 29th June. This is a Grade I listed Deputy Fellows in Training concert hall that stands in the city centre; it is walking distance from the ICC. Expanding the clinician’s awareness of surgical treatment options for edentulous arches, this advanced course will look at both fixed and removable options, including the All-on-4 concept. Participants will focus on the practical skills necessary to select and treat edentulous patients. Hands-on exercises and demonstrations enable participants to experience surgical solutions and the components needed more fully. This course is designed for clinicians who have extensive experience in implant dentistry
