A number of additional cetacean species may occasionally be seen in coastal waters, for example the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), the long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas) and the dusky dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus). A full list of the species that have been documented to date around the Falklands can be found in Appendix 1. Note that many of these are typical of deeper, oceanic waters, and are unlikely to be encountered along the coast. The six species (or seven species, including two species of minke whale) described in this document are observed regularly in shallow, nearshore waters, and are the focus of this identification guide. Harbour porpoise Did you Know? There are 90 different types of whales, dolphins and porpoises. Only 7 of these are porpoises; the porpoise family look very similar to dolphins and are hard to tell apart. Porpoises are just a bit smaller, have blunt shaped noses, small dorsal fins and flat-shaped teeth. Examples are Harbour porpoise, Dall’s porpoise and Spectacled porpoise. Fontaine 1,10* Historical variation in food resources is expected to be a major driver of cetacean evolution, especially for the smallest species like porpoises. Despite major conservation issues among porpoise species (e.g., vaquita and fnless), their evolutionary history remains understudied. Here, we reconstructed their evolutionary history across the speciation continuum. Phylogenetic analyses of 63 mitochondrial genomes suggest that porpoises radiated during the deep environmental changes of the Pliocene. However, all intra-specifc subdivisions were shaped during the Quaternary glaciations. We observed analogous evolutionary patterns in both hemispheres associated with convergent evolution to coastal versus oceanic environments. This suggests that similar mechanisms are driving species diversifcation in northern (harbor and Dall’s) and southern species (spectacled and Burmeister’s). In contrast to previous studies, spectacled and Burmeister’s porpoises shared a more recent common ancestor than with the vaquita that diverged from southern species during the Pliocene. The low genetic diversity observed in the vaquita carried signatures of a very low population size since the last 5,000 years. Cryptic lineages within Dall’s, spectacled and Pacifc harbor porpoises suggest a richer evolutionary history than previously suspected. These results provide a new perspective on the mechanisms driving diversifcation in porpoises and an evolutionary framework for their conservation. -

Global Cetacean Summary Report
CONSERVATION AND VALUES GLOBAL CETACEAN SUMMARY REPORT This is a summary report on research commissioned by the Australian Government and undertaken by the Southern Cross University Whale Research Centre and Syneca Pty Ltd, Sydney Australia. The findings draw from a wide range of current literature, notably the reports of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the International Whaling Commission (IWC). In the interests of brevity, references have not been included in this report although they can be obtained from the original reports which are available on the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts website at www.environment.gov.au/coasts/species/cetaceans/index.html The views and opinions expressed in this publication are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of the Australian Government or the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts. Cetacean Code of Conduct for the Falkland Islands
Cetacean code of conduct for the Falkland Islands Falklands Conservation: Version 2, July 2020 Introduction The Falkland Islands support a diverse array of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), with at least 26 species recorded in the islands to date (Table 1). While many of those species typically inhabit pelagic waters, several species occur regularly in coastal areas where they may come into contact with marine traffic. Peale's and Commerson's dolphins are encountered year-round in nearshore waters throughout the islands, with killer whales being seen regularly in some areas on a seasonal basis (e.g. Sea Lion Island). Baleen whales including the sei whale, southern right whale and minke whale also occur seasonally in coastal water, sometimes close to shore. Cetacean-watching ecotourism in the Falkland Islands is currently small-scale compared to many other locations worldwide, consisting of occasional commercial whale-watching boat trips in Berkeley Sound during the sei whale season (primarily January to May). Additionally, during the summer season a large number of cruise, expedition and sailing vessels travel through Falkland waters on tours that incorporate, or focus on, marine wildlife viewing. Cetaceans may also be approached by privately-owned recreational craft and during scientific monitoring surveys. Non-ecotourism vessels may also encounter cetaceans incidentally while operating in Falkland waters. This currently includes a wide variety of fishing vessels, reefers, launches, tankers, supply boats, ferries and military vessels. This Code of Conduct was drafted by Falklands Conservation with funding from the European Union BEST 2.0 Programme.
