His father and grandfather had both been captains of the Penn State track team. His grandfather had even once been co-holder of the world record in the hundred yard dash. What was unexpected was that Jack would be able to use his family’s gift for speed to earn himself a successful career in the National Football League. After several false starts, though, Jack Dolbin became a popular player for the Denver Broncos, and the team’s leading receiver in Super Bowl XII. Jack Dolbin first tasted gridiron success at his hometown high school in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. As a star running back he was selected to play in the Big 33 Game, and went to Wake Forest on an athletic scholarship. Dolbin continued to play running back for the Demon Deacons. While he had a solid career, he wasn’t chosen in the NFL draft. Instead he spent 1971 with the semi-pro Pottstown Firebirds. When the NFL still didn’t come calling, Dolbin decided to get on with his life. He moved to Lombard, Illinois and began taking classes at the National College of Chiropractic. Freeman is big, fast, had a great college career as the Ducks’ all-time leading rusher. With six AFC championships including two Super Bowl championships, all in the span of 21 years, we have been one of the NFL’s most successful franchises. When I came to the Broncos in 1983 as a twelfth round draft choice, I was just another foolish rookie. Fortunately for me the Bronco’s defensive roster was full of veteran players with a team focus. Ruben Carter, Steve Foley, Louis Wright, Tom Jackson, Barney Chavous, Brison Manor, and Randy Gradishire were all veteran players from the famed “Orange Crush” defense. They not only taught me how to be a professional and selfless team player, but in many ways they taught me how to be a man. There are only forty nine roster spots on an NFL team, so each rookie who makes the team takes a veteran’s job. Despite the limited job pool, these veterans knew that for the team to be successful they needed to mentor the twelve rookies that had made the final roster that year. They needed to get them up to speed in a hurry. The veteran’s focus on team goals, instead of their own concerns, was a great example for us as young players. The “Orange Crush” left a legacy that has lasted long after their playing days were over. I played on some great Bronco teams in my twelve years in the NFL. We won three AFC championships and were usually in contention for the AFC West title.

Finalists for the Salute to Service Award presented by USAA will be announced in January, and the recipient will be recognized at NFL Honors, a two-hour primetime awards special to air nationally on Feb. 2, 2019 the night before Super Bowl LIII. “Since 2011, USAA has used its platform with the NFL to honor and appreciate military members, veterans, and their families, bringing them closer to a game they love,” said Vice Admiral (Ret.) JOHN BIRD, USAA Senior Vice President of Military Affairs. “All of the nominees for this year’s ‘Salute to Service Award presented by USAA’ deserve special recognition for their commitment to support our nation’s military.” Current New York Jet and former Atlanta Falcons wide receiver ANDRE ROBERTS was last year's award recipient. USAA, a leading provider of insurance and other services to U.S. military members, veterans and their families, contributed $25,000 in his honor to the official aid societies representing all five military branches. USAA will continue to contribute $25,000 in the winner’s name to the official aid societies and the NFL will match USAA’s donation of $25,000, which will be donated to the award recipient’s military charity of choice.
