His father and grandfather had both been captains of the Penn State track team. His grandfather had even once been co-holder of the world record in the hundred yard dash. What was unexpected was that Jack would be able to use his family’s gift for speed to earn himself a successful career in the National Football League. After several false starts, though, Jack Dolbin became a popular player for the Denver Broncos, and the team’s leading receiver in Super Bowl XII. Jack Dolbin first tasted gridiron success at his hometown high school in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. As a star running back he was selected to play in the Big 33 Game, and went to Wake Forest on an athletic scholarship. Dolbin continued to play running back for the Demon Deacons. While he had a solid career, he wasn’t chosen in the NFL draft. Instead he spent 1971 with the semi-pro Pottstown Firebirds. When the NFL still didn’t come calling, Dolbin decided to get on with his life. He moved to Lombard, Illinois and began taking classes at the National College of Chiropractic. That hasn’t been the case lately, especially when it comes to offensive players. As a result, the Broncos haven’t made the playoffs the past two seasons. Say this about Elway’s 2018 draft class: It’s not short on star power. The Broncos started the draft with three players who made names for themselves in college. In the first round, pass rusher Bradley Chubb fell to the Broncos and it became an easy pick. In the second round, Denver took SMU receiver Courtland Sutton, a big and athletic playmaker who might be a bit raw, but could be a No. 1 receiver at a discount draft price if he develops. And then the Broncos, who needed a running back after cutting C.J. Anderson, landed Oregon’s Royce Freeman in the third round. Freeman is big, fast, had a great college career as the Ducks’ all-time leading rusher. Their final third-round pick of the night, Boston College cornerback Isaac Yiadom, isn’t an instant star but he fills a need. Nothing says any of those top three picks are going to work out. Shane Ray was a great pass-rushing prospect when the Broncos took him in the first round, and now he’s practically done in Denver.     Bronco Teamwork, The Legacy of the Orange Crush The Denver Broncos NFL legacy is one of team success. With six AFC championships including two Super Bowl championships, all in the span of 21 years, we have been one of the NFL’s most successful franchises. When I came to the Broncos in 1983 as a twelfth round draft choice, I was just another foolish rookie. Fortunately for me the Bronco’s defensive roster was full of veteran players with a team focus. Ruben Carter, Steve Foley, Louis Wright, Tom Jackson, Barney Chavous, Brison Manor, and Randy Gradishire were all veteran players from the famed “Orange Crush” defense. They not only taught me how to be a professional and selfless team player, but in many ways they taught me how to be a man. There are only forty nine roster spots on an NFL team, so each rookie who makes the team takes a veteran’s job. Despite the limited job pool, these veterans knew that for the team to be successful they needed to mentor the twelve rookies that had made the final roster that year. They needed to get them up to speed in a hurry. The veteran’s focus on team goals, instead of their own concerns, was a great example for us as young players. The “Orange Crush” left a legacy that has lasted long after their playing days were over. I played on some great Bronco teams in my twelve years in the NFL. We won three AFC championships and were usually in contention for the AFC West title.
