PRESS RELEASE The sell-out West End hit show THE SIMON AND GARFUNKEL STORY comes to New Brighton as part of a UK Tour Following its WEST END success at London’s Leicester Square Theatre in February 2015, The Simon and Garfunkel Story is currently the No 1 touring theatre show celebrating the lives and career of this folk/rock duo sensation. Starring Dean Elliot (Paul Simon) and David Tudor (Art Garfunkel), and directed by David Beck, The Simon and Garfunkel Story comes to New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion Theatre on Thursday 3 rd September 2015. The Simon and Garfunkel Story tells the fascinating tale of how two young boys from Queens, New York went on to become the world’s most successful music duo of all time. Starting from their humble beginnings as 50’s Rock n Roll duo ‘Tom & Jerry’, the show takes you through all the songs and stories that shaped them, the dramatic split, their individual solo careers and ending with a stunning recreation of the legendary 1981 Central Park reunion concert. LIPA trained actor and musician Dean Elliott rose to fame in the lead role as Buddy Holly in the West End, Olivier Award nominated musical Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story . In this role he had the honour of opening the 2008 West End Revival at the Duchess Theatre, London and in Buddy’s hometown of Lubbock, Texas before taking the role around Europe and Canada. U2 3D Talent: Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen, Adam Clayton. Directors: Mark Pellington and Catherine Owens Duration: 85 minutes Classification: G We rate it: 3 and a half stars. There’s no denying that Irish rock band U2 are probably still the biggest live musical act in the world, even after twenty-odd years of touring. Aside from maybe the great outdoor extravaganzas mounted during the 1970s and 80s by Pink Floyd, U2’s live gigs are renowned as dazzling, cutting-edge spectacles, as politically and ideologically provocative as they are musically engaging. Bono, the acknowledged master of making fame itself humanely useful, still struts his stuff as if he’s a 25-year- old, and the band that supports him is as skilled as rock bands get. To see this chart- topping foursome filmed playing before staggeringly large crowds in state-of-the-art digital 3D and surround sound is, admittedly, quite a spectacle. The peculiar thing, however, about sitting in a cinema and watching U2 3D is that throughout the experience, stunning as it is, one can’t help but reflect upon the fact that one is sitting in a darkened room watching film of a band playing live in front of crowds of a hundred thousand people. There’s something decidedly strange about sitting passively and observing (through the suitably nerdy polarising 3D glasses) this massive rock show, whose actual filmed audiences just don’t stop screaming and waving for a second. As one ruminatively chews one’s popcorn and sips one’s soft- drink, one can’t help but feel faintly left out, to say the least. -

Students listen for their words, and tick them as they hear them (similar to Bingo). Play the complete song. Seiler calls “contemporary conscious popular music”, which includes “music of any genre that focuses on social issues and perceived problems in society and may or may not include music that carries an overtly political message”. Consequently, much of the analysis of their songs claim that these are only a mere description of the terrible situation countries such as Ireland and the US were facing at that time. In this paper, however, I will examine the sociopolitical significance of U2’s songs as an appreciator of their cultural contribution and show that the events which formed the backdrop to some of U2’s most explicitly political songs in the 1980s – especially those included in War and The Joshua Tree – are etched indelibly into the text of both Ireland’s and America’s troubled colonial and political history.
