It then extended from New Mexico Territory on the east to Yuma County on the west. Beginning in 1881, the county boundaries were reduced by the creation of Cochise, Maricopa, Graham, Pinal, and Santa Cruz counties. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Records of the operations of Pima County offices, beginning in 1865 but mostly produced between 1880 and 1920. The bulk of the collection consists of companies’ required filings with the Pima County Recorder’s office for incorporations, partnerships, and appointments of company agents; marriage certificates; appointments to county offices; and ledgers containing Board of Supervisor’s meeting minutes. The records provide a detailed glimpse of the people and businesses in Pima County in the earliest years of its operation including railroads, water companies, churches, cattle companies, mining corporations, and other businesses. Business documents contain information such as owner’s names, and company name and location of business. Marriage certificates are present for Mexican American, Indian, and Anglo citizens from 1865 to 1889. The records reference many of Pima County’s pioneer families. Ledgers of Pima County Board of Supervisor’s meeting minutes provide a comprehensive summary of their activities from 1886 to 1946. Highlights include documents for Tombstone businesses, Chinese-owned businesses, and mining operations in rural Pima County. There are juror’s certificates for the Tewksbury trial (f.349), carbon copies of court orders in the Hunt vs. Campbell election contest (f.331), an incorporation for the Tucson Volunteer Fire Dept. (f.96), and an investigation of County Physician Dr. George Purcell’s expenditures which includes a list of St. Mary’s Hospital’s surgical patients (f.335). The records include some early records of Cochise and Santa Cruz counties before those counties were established in 1881 and 1899 respectively.
