Tulane University Gayle Benson joins Board of Tulane April 08, 2014 10:30 AM Mike Strecker [email protected] 504-865-5210 Tulane University announced today that Gayle Benson, wife of New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson, a philanthropist and former interior designer, has joined the Board of Tulane. “Gayle is one of New Orleans" most beloved figures. Her wisdom, devotion to the community and steady leadership will be indispensable as Tulane welcomes a new president and continues its journey of enhanced impact, quality and distinction,” Tulane President Scott Cowen said. Benson began her career managing the New Orleans branch of a New York-based custom jeweler. She then became an interior designer, transforming historic homes and leading major redesigns and renovations of hotels, grocery stores and car dealerships throughout New Orleans, including suites and public spaces in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. An accomplished seamstress, she also created a successful line of women"s clothing. “As a New Orleans native, I have always been proud of Tulane"s role as one of the country"s leading universities. I now cherish the opportunity to help shape its future,” Benson said. “I know it is a future of even greater achievement and renown as we educate and serve New Orleans.” Benson is currently working on a campaign to renovate the second floor of the historic Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans and consulting on a book about her husband. In addition to the millions of dollars they have given to religious, educational and medical institutions in New Orleans and San Antonio, the Bensons are major donors to Yulman Stadium, Tulane"s new on-campus football stadium. Benson laughed when he caught himself mentioning he and his friends sat at last year’s Kentucky Derby on the 50-yard line — forgive him, the finish line. Keeping track of a jet-set agenda that orbits around multiple sports is an everyday thing for the Bensons. It can’t be easy keeping all this straight. KEENELAND.COM K SUMMER 2017 37 divine calling In tribute to Tom’s first car dealership, Gayle Benson had a golf cart converted to resemble a ’57 Chevy. At any time the Bensons could be at training camp for their New Orleans Saints. Or flying to an away game for their New Orleans Pelicans. Or checking in at Keeneland. Last year they added the Derby to their whirlwind itinerary, watching two of Gayle’s horses, Mo Tom and Tom’s Ready, finish off the board. But all was not lost. Moving on last fall to the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, Tom’s Ready ran a respectable fifth: not a bad finish to the season for this on-the-go couple in their first few years of racing. The Bensons’ goals for their horses are no dif- ferent from those of others participating at Thor- oughbred racing’s elite levels: They want to win the major events.

In the year prior, the team, along with many in New Orleans and the Gulf South, were exiled suddenly from home because of the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The victory also propelled the Saints to a 3-0 record to start the season and served as a launching pad for the team’s run to their first NFC Championship game appearance and a season sweep against Atlanta.

TOM BENSON Owner/Chairman of the Board Tom Benson’s pronouncement upon taking on ownership of the New Orleans Saints that he would one day bring a championship to his hometown came to fruition on February 7, 2010 when his Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts, 31-17, in Super Bowl XLIV. The Saints’ successful march to the National Football League’s Championship level has been the crown jewel of many highlights that the franchise has experienced both on and off the field since 2006. This period, featuring the Super Bowl title, two NFC Championship appearances, three division championships and fiver playoff berths, combined with a commitment to rebuild and enhance the Gulf South region, has embodied the testament and realization of the principles that Mr. Benson has instilled in the Saints’ organization throughout his 29 years of team ownership. The essential qualities and directives of Mr. Benson’s tenure as owner of the Saints have been unadorned – direct all of his efforts and resources towards bringing the fans what have been consistently new levels of success on the football field, all the while supporting his hometown and the entire region by investing in the community. Benson attorney James Gulotta Jr. filed a motion Tuesday opposing the release of the documents sought by the Associated Press, CNN, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, according to the Orleans Parish Civil District Court website. Meanwhile, lawyers for the daughter and grandchildren with whom Benson fell out at the end of his life said in a motion that they had “no opposition” to the unsealing of the case files. While the titles of each motion are public, their contents — along with most of the rest of the record in the case — are sealed. Benson's side didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Drawing from bricolage as a form of research, the collective case study design (Stake, 2005) was employed to investigate the NFL and its ownership groups to better understand the political economy which shapes – and is shaped by – the NFL. Analyzing a variety of content from sources including the NFL, official team websites, news articles, legal cases, media interviews, online databases, and empirical social science, data were coded into themes and discussed in terms of NFL owners as a collective unit. As empowered through the structure of the NFL, ownership themes included the following: (a) overrepresentation of elite white men, (b) intergenerational transfer of wealth, (c) nepotism, (d) inter-institutional representation, (e) political and economic network, and (f) philanthropy. The interrelation of these themes points to the centrality of NFL ownership within a broader political and economic network that (re)produces the politics of elite-white-male dominance in the United States (see Feagin & Ducey, 2017).

The gift will both name the Sanctuary of the University’s St. Katharine Drexel Chapel the Gayle and Tom Benson Sanctuary and establish the Gayle and Tom Benson Scholarship Fund. The Sanctuary – the area of the Chapel immediately around the Altar – will be officially named during a special public ceremony Thursday, Sept. 06, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel, with a private reception to follow. The funds will provide operational and maintenance for the campus Chapel, which was opened in 2012. The St. Katharine Drexel Chapel, named for Xavier’s founder, serves as a central location where Xavier community members of all faiths celebrate and remember Mother Katharine’s deep love of God and belief that through evangelization and education Xavier would train students to become servant leaders in the world. The scholarship fund will provide yearly scholarship awards to New Orleans area students up to $5,000 per semester, for a maximum of eight semesters per student. Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of their academic standing and documented financial need.
