IPR produces a weekly one-hour program focused on leaders in the community. “Island Cabin Discs” gives opportunities to leaders in the community to share about the organizations they serve, in the context of sharing their favorite music. More than 155 leaders in the community have been featured.

IPR retained several community members as paid reporters for news stories and features. In many cases, IPR staff has worked with these freelance reporters to produce news reports.

Interlochen Public Radio conducted listener focus groups designed to help station staff improve reporting on local issues. 44 listeners participated in intensive focus group sessions in Manistee and Traverse City.

Form 396 EEO Program Narrative Statement

Station management has implemented several initiatives to train students, interns, and aspiring broadcast professionals in several aspects of the production and dissemination of media. The stations of Interlochen Center for the Arts host two to four interns each year, providing training and experience in broadcast journalism, music library management, engaging members of the community in station operations, and audio program production and broadcast. Station staff members engage a number of freelance reporters and music producer/hosts in the community each year.

Station management or staff attend broadcasting career fairs, expos, and conferences in the community each year to inform the public about broadcasting jobs and station operations. The Station hosts Open Houses and receptions each year to increase awareness in the community about the station’s programs and services.

Area high school students participate in Station‐initiated curricular programs designed to teach communications through audio production and reporting.

Job postings at the Station are distributed widely through several online organizational job sites and regionally in newspapers, at regional colleges and universities, and to tribal nations.
