Routledge Handbook of Marxism and Post-Marxism
ROUTLEDGE HANDBOOK OF MARXISM AND POST-MARXISM In the past two decades, Marxism has enjoyed a revitalization as a research program and a growth in its audience. This renaissance is connected to the revival of anti-capitalist contestation since the Seattle protests in 1999 and the impact of the global economic and financial crisis in 2007–8. It intersects with the emergence of Post-Marxism since the 1980s represented by thinkers such as Jrgen Habermas, Chantal Mouffe, Ranajit Guha and Alain Badiou. This handbook explores the development of Marxism and Post-Marxism, setting them in dialogue against a truly global backdrop. Transcending the disciplinary boundaries between philosophy, economics, politics and history, an international range of expert contributors guide the reader through the main varieties and preoccupations of Marxism and Post-Marxism. Through a series of framing and illustrative essays, readers will explore these traditions, starting from Marx and Engels themselves, through the thinkers of the Second and Third Internationals (Rosa Luxemburg, Lenin and Trotsky, among others), the Tricontinental, and subaltern and postcolonial studies, to more contemporary figures such as Huey Newton, Fredric Jameson, Judith Butler, Immanuel Wallerstein and Samir Amin. The Routledge Handbook of Marxism and Post-Marxism will be of interest to scholars and researchers of philosophy, cultural studies and theory, sociology, political economics and several areas of political science, including political theory, Marxism, political ideologies and critical theory. Alex Callinicos is Emeritus Professor of European studies at King’s College London and was editor of International Socialism from 2009 to 2020. His most recent books are Deciphering Capital (2014), Bonfire of Illusions (2010) and Imperialism and Global Political Economy (2009). -

Filozofski vestnik | Letnik XXXVIII | Številka 1 | 2017 | 133–151 Jason Barker* Schizoanalytic Cartographies: On Maps and Models of Capitalism A tourist prepares to take a photograph of the Grand Canyon. Overwhelmed by its sheer scale, she zooms in on the sublime vista in the hope that isolating a dis- crete portion of it will somehow capture its holistic essence. However, in a final gesture of resignation she ushers her friend into the frame. If a photograph can’t do justice to the thing itself then at least it can testify to the missing context: “this” is where we were. Was the photographer mistaken in her reasoning? A neo-Kantian or post-mod- ern take on the incident would surely conclude, at least according to the best linguistic models currently available, that in an age when, “Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data—so much that 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone,”1 any such representation of the whole, even in part, is impossible. Acutely aware of this technology-induced shortfall, contemporary psychoanalytic and set theoretical discourses content themselves with transforming an epistemological deficit into an ontological da- tum. The analysand’s resistance to the analyst is by no means incompatible with the truth of the symptom; nor is the mathematician any less remote from the concept of infinity by working in abstractions. On the contrary, in either case the limits of knowledge can be fixed as the property of a universe, as e.g. when the analysand works through the symptom herself rather than being treated by the analyst, or the mathematician proves that the subset of the set of reals is a 133 neighbourhood of the set of natural numbers. -
Marx's Legacy, Régulation Theory and Contemporary Capitalism
REVIEW OF POLITICAL ECONOMY, 2018 https://doi.org/10.1080/09538259.2018.1449480 Marx’s Legacy, Régulation Theory and Contemporary Capitalism Robert Boyer Institut des Amériques, Vanves, France ABSTRACT ARTICLE HISTORY The 2008 financial crisis has challenged the merits of standard Received 3 November 2017 economic theories and sparked surprising references to Marxist Accepted 20 February 2018 analyses. A monetary economy is prone to crises, the interaction KEYWORDS of competition with capital–labour relations launches relentless 1929 crisis; 2008 crisis; accumulation and over-accumulation crises exacerbate the built-in economic history; contradictions of the capitalist mode of production. Nevertheless, institutional change; Marxist until now, these imbalances have not unfolded into its rapid and theory; Régulation theory complete collapse. From the social and political struggles of labour and citizens, the 1929 crisis and finally the Second World JEL CODES War, new configurations emerge for the wage–labour nexus, the B22; B52; E11; E32; O43; P10 form of competition and the monetary and credit regime. These delineate an unprecedented accumulation regime, Fordism. In turn, Fordism enters a structural crisis and a dramatic change in institutionalized compromises favours a still different accumulation regime (finance-led) that evolved from one speculative boom to another till the 2008 American financial collapse. Thus the mobilization of Marx’s foundational hypotheses by Régulation theory allows a better understanding than most alternative theories of major contemporary stylized facts: productivity slow-down and social polarization in mature economies, tensions between capitalism and democracy, new industrial capitalisms and limits to globalization. 1. Introduction Contemporary economists used to be proud of the advances of their discipline far away from the impressionistic approach of classical political economy. -
