CURRENT STATE OF VI TALI TY AND PRESERVATION

Kalkan is one of the settlements on the Fethiye-Antalya coast to have kept its original traditional characteristics until the recent past. As it was awarded conservation status at an early stage, preservation can be effected before serious damage occurs. However, in recent years tourism has grown with a corresponding demand for large numbers of new constructions, which are replicas of the traditional houses.

TRANSFOR MATION PR OCESS

Kalkan was an active trading port in the 19th century, but gradually decreased in importance until recent years when, with the construction of the highway between Antalya and Fethiye, it became popular as a tourist centre.

INTERVEN TIONS AND REHABILI TATION PROGRAMMES

Kalkan was awarded conservation status on 6th February 1982 by the High Council of Monuments and Immovable Cultural Properties. Construction work is still regulated by Antalya Regional Council for the Preservation of Cultural and Natural Properties, as the conservation plan has not yet been prepared.
