Department of Physics, University of Agriculture, PMB 2240, Abeokuta, [email protected] 1All correspondence should be directed to 2 above Abstract: A geophysical study using the Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) techniques has been used to investigate the sub-surface layering in the southwestern part of the Niger Basin in order to determine the nature, characteristics and spatial extent of the components of the aquifer underlying the region. The results of the interpreted VES data suggest that the layering in the region range from three to five layers. The geologic sections derived from the analyzed geoelectric section suggest that the alluvial deposits of sand, sandy clay, medium to coarse sandstones, as well as the weathered and fractured basement constitute the aquifer found in this sedimentary region. Furthermore the results of the interpretation of the VES data indicate that the thickness values of the aquifer vary from 6.01 m to 58.60 m. The geoelectric section generated also suggest that the resistivity values of the aquifer components range from 4.2 Ω-m to 106.7 Ω- m for the alluvial deposits; 33.7 Ω-m to 108.6 Ω-m (weathered basement); and 345.7 Ω-m to 564.0 Ω-m for the fractured basement rocks. -

Accepted 28 July, 2020 This study was carried out to assess fish processors on the use of fish processing technologies in Kwara state. Primary data were collected with the aid of structured interview schedule using a multi- stage sampling procedure. 150 fish processors were selected for the study. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that majority of the fish processors were female which indicated that the enterprise was gender sensitive. Majority was married, middle age, have no formal education and has experience on fish processing in the study area. Majority of the fish processors got information about fish processing technologies from radio. The result also revealed that mud oven was the commonly used fish processing technology for processing in the study area.The major constraint hindering the use of fish processing technology was the high cost of modern fish processing technologies while the least problem was competition within fish processors. -

Journal of Sustainable Development in Africa (Volume 13, No.5, 2011) ISSN: 1520-5509 Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Clarion, Pennsylvania DETERMINING RICE PRODUCTIVITY LEVEL FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN PATIGI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA (LGA) OF KWARA STATE, NIGERIA Olabode Abiodun Daniel Department of Geography and Environmental Management, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria ABSTRACT The study investigates rice productivity level for sustainable agricultural development within Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. The study further identifies; rice yield level based on the agro-ecological impact. Data used were collected through questionnaire and oral interview with a reconnaissance visit to the sample groups. However, secondary data were collected from the existing books, journals, maps and internet. Random Sampling technique was used to draw a population of 224 from a population of 45,712 which was used for 200 people as sampling frame of the entire population. Above all, a number of 224 questionnaires were administered and used in the course of the study. Tables and figures were used for presentations and discussions of results. Finally, it was observed that an appreciable level of rice yield was a function of various technological improvements. It was, therefore, recommended that yield improvement can come in either of two ways: (a) by shifting the yield frontier, i.e., breeding varieties that have significant higher yield potential than the current varieties, e.g., New Plant Type; and (b) by developing and promoting technologically enhanced yield, through the use of high quality seeds, efficient fertilizers application and gravity irrigation system. NIGERIA email:[email protected] Dr Robin Nicholas MSc, PhD, FRCPath Consultant, The Oaks, Nutshell Lane, Upper Hale, Farnham, Surrey GU9 0HG, UK Email: [email protected] Executive summary Contagious bovine (CBPP) and caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) are OIE-listed diseases because of the socio-economic impact they have mainly on smaller holdings often on marginal land in Asia and Africa. Despite some successful attempts in Nigeria at controlling CBPP in the 1970s there is substantial evidence that the disease is endemic in many parts of the country. CCPP, on the other hand, has been suspected based on clinical and pathological signs but has not been confirmed by laboratory tests. Furthermore, there have been no surveys to show its distribution in the country. Following the purchase of equipment, test kits and reagents and refurbishment and training, a mycoplasma laboratory was established and commissioned in July 2020 by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Kwara state, western Nigeria. A commercial competitive ELISA for the serological detection of the causative agent of CBPP, Mycoplasma mycoides subsp mycoides, was used to screen abattoirs in the state. Between 6 and 135 samples were taken from each; the percentage of positive sera varied between 0 and 13.5%. However, where more than 40 samples were taken seroprevalence was shown to be between approximately 7 and 14%. -

EMS/Speedpost generated the highest amount of revenue of N1.84bn representing about 26.16% of the total revenue generated in the year. Parcel clearance/delivery fee, stamp proceeds and international mail income followed closely with N1.60bn, N1.04bn and N560.96m revenues generated representing 22.76%, 14.77% and 7.95% of the total revenue generated respectively. The agency handled a total of 20,117,730 mails domestically and internationally in 2018. 9,264,957 mails which represent about 46.05% of the total mails were handled locally while 2,499,631 mails which represent about 12.43% of the total mails were dispatched abroad. -

This study therefore ascertained climate change adaptation strategies used by fish farmers in Pategi Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara State, Nigeria. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select 185 respondents for the study. Data were elicited with the aid of a questionnaire coupled with interview schedule and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Probit regression model. Results revealed that the mean age of respondents was 42.6 years while 65.4% were literate. Majority (87.5%) of the respondents exhibited a high level of awareness of the impacts of climate change on their fish farming activities and livelihoods. Radio (26.7%) and internet (17.8%) were the major sources of information utilized by the fish farmers on climate change. -
