Info About IB Personal Project Shaker Heights High School, along with Shaker Middle School and Woodbury, are now officially International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) schools! As this is our first year as a fully-authorized MYP district, all 10th graders are now expected to complete an independent inquiry into a topic of their choice. The topic should be meaningful and challenging to the student while not taking over their already busy lives. A few examples from Shaker's previous pilot program include: 1) creating a YouTube series, 2) shadowing a doctor, 3) performing in a play, 4) building a computer, 5) writing a short-story, 6) organizing a fundraiser, and 7) starting a new club. The range of topics has been inspiring, a trend that Shaker will undoubtedly continue. The Personal Project is an individualized experience completed in the 10th grade year. It consists of three main components: a product/experience, a process journal, and a written or oral explanation of the project.Students have the opportunity to choose their topic and enjoy learning about it, much like Exhibition in the 4th grade year and Senior Project in the 12th. For the Personal Project, every student is paired with a faculty member who coaches them through the completion of their inquiry. To provide you with a more specific timeline and additional details regarding the Personal Project, we invite you to the Large Auditorium on Thursday, September 10, at 6:15 pm just prior to Open House. Students who previously completed projects will be available for questions as well (some pictured below). We look forward to working with your student on this exciting adventure! More information can be found here: Brochure and YouTube Video Overview. Or contact John Moore by email or 295-6322. Order Your Yearbook Now! Yearbooks are now available to be purchased for $50 until October 25. After that date the price increases! They can be purchased at the high school in the main office, or by clicking here. Shaker Marching Band in the News Northeast Ohio Media Group reporter, Maura Zurick, spent some time at Marching Band camp a few weeks ago. You can read her article, Shaker Heights, The Biggest Darn Band in the Land: March On, by clicking here. Her article includes videos and interviews with students. Get Shaker Bands news: FeedBlitz signup Shaker Bands website Did You Know? There are sauerkraut and salsa gardens at the High School. The German Club is growing two types of cabbage in the Learning Garden. The students intend to make sauerkraut and then learn to can it. Mano En Mano has a salsa garden with tomatoes, onions, peppers, and cilantro. The students are going to make salsa and also learn to can. Reminder from the Math Department Students are required to have a graphing calculator for math class. Graphing calculators have become common place in the mathematics classroom and are permitted on the State of Ohio end-of-course exams, the ACT, PSAT, and SAT. Students who are not familiar with the workings of a graphing calculator may be at a disadvantage on these assessments. In most courses, the desired calculator is a Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus or a TI-84 Plus CE model. Prices vary from store to store so you may want to do some comparison shopping. The TI-84 Plus CE is the newest model in the line-up. It has more available memory, a higher screen resolution, and color graphics. Students in AB or BC calculus should purchase a TI-89 calculator (most students probably already have one). Students who are in the free or reduced lunch program should see Mrs. Steenbergh in the main office for a permission slip to checkout a calculator from the school library. Please direct your questions to Gene Tournoux, Math Department Head by email or by calling 295-4249. Peru Immersion Trip Spring Break 2016 Interested?
