Introduction Since ancient times, essential oils are recognized for their medicinal value and they are very interesting and powerful natural plant products. They continue to be of paramount importance until the present day. Essential oils have been used as perfumes, flavors for foods and beverages, or to heal both body and mind for thousands of years (Baris et al., 2006; Margaris et al., 1982; Tisserand, 1997; Wei & Shibamoto 2010). Record findings in Mesopotamia, China, India, Persia and ancient Egypt show their uses for many treatments in various forms. For example, in the ancient Egypt, the population extracted oils by infusion. Later; Greeks and Romans used distillation and thus gave aromatic plants an additional value. With the advent of Islamic civilization, extraction techniques have been further refined. In the era of the Renaissance, Europeans have taken over the task and with the development of science the composition and the nature of essential oils have been well established and studied (Burt, 2004; Peeyush et al., 2011; Steven, 2010; Suaib et al., 2007). Nowadays, peppermint, lavender, geranium, eucalyptus, rose, bergamot, sandalwood and chamomile essential oils are the most frequently traded ones. 2. Definition and localization of essential oils Essential oils (also called volatile or ethereal oils, because they evaporate when exposed to heat in contrast to fixed oils) are odorous and volatile compounds found only in 10% of the plant kingdom and are stored in plants in special brittle secretory structures, such as glands, secretory hairs, secretory ducts, secretory cavities or resin ducts (Ahmadi et al., 2002; Bezić et al., 2009; Ciccarelli et al., 2008; Gershenzon et al., 1994; Liolios et al., 2010; Morone- Fortunato et al., 2010; Sangwan et al., 2001; Wagner et al., 1996). -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Myrtaceae family (Eucalyptus, Melaleuca spp.) Rutaceae (Boronia, Geijera spp.) Lamiaceae (Prostanthera, Mentha spp.) Lauraceae (Cinnamomum, Doryphora spp.) Santalaceae (Sandalwood) Cupressaceae (Cypress) Winteraceae (Tasmannia spp.) HYBRIDS, SUB-SPECIES AND CHEMOTYPES: EUCALYPTUS Despite the fact that Australia is known as the “oldest continent” the Eucalyptus genus has evolved relatively recently, and the vast number of sub-species and hybrids suggests the evolutionary process is still quite active. Hence any particular wild Eucalyptus specimen may be a true species, or maybe hybrids of two species - making correct identification a difficult matter. Establishing the chemical profile of an individual plant is even more complex, since various “chemotypes” exist for some species of Eucalyptus and of the Myrtaceae family generally. Each chemotype is genetically determined and physical features and locality are not accurate indicators. The only reliable method is to submit the leaves to chemical analysis, the most common method being GC/MS = gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer. Priority Ecological Communities for Western
PRIORITY ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITIES FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA VERSION 27 Species and Communities Branch, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions 30 June 2017 Possible threatened ecological communities that do not meet survey criteria or that are not adequately defined are added to the priority ecological community list under priorities 1, 2 and 3. These three categories are ranked in order of priority for survey and/or definition of the community, and evaluation of conservation status, so that consideration can be given to their declaration as threatened ecological communities. Ecological communities that are adequately known, and are rare but not threatened or meet criteria for near threatened, or that have been recently removed from the threatened list, are placed in priority 4. These ecological communities require regular monitoring. Conservation dependent ecological communities are placed in priority 5. Note: i) Nothing in this table may be construed as a nomination for listing under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) ii) The inclusion in this table of a community type does not necessarily imply any status as a threatened ecological community, however some communities are listed as threatened ecological communities (TECs) under the EPBC Act (see column D). iii) The key diagnostic characteristics, condition and size thresholds in the Approved Conservation Advices should be applied to determine if particular areas align with EPBC listed TECs. iii) Regions eg Pilbara are based on Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions regional boundaries. iv) For definitions of categories (Priority 1 etc.) refer to document entitled ‘Definitions and Categories’. The main objectives of the survey were to confirm the presence of previously discovered threatened flora within the Study Area and to search for undiscovered occurrences, and to assess the vegetation in the Study Area, particularly with regard to the presence of Priority Ecological Communities. The threatened flora survey, carried out in late September and early October, confirmed the presence of Daviesia elongata subsp. elongata (DRF, ‘vulnerable’), and two Priority listed species: Acacia semitrullata (P4) and Conospermum paniculatum (P3). A population of Verticordia densiflora var. pedunculata (DRF, ‘endangered’) was also found within the Study Area; this taxon had previously been misidentified as the common Verticordia densiflora var. caespitosa. Another taxon, provisionally identified as the Priority species Jacksonia gracillima following the previous survey of the Study Area, was instead confirmed as the Whicher Range variety of the common species J. -
