First the Prizes, Then the Party! First the prizes, then the party! w w www.sneekweek.nl [email protected] The Royal Yacht Club Sneek (KWS) has organized this special event for the past 77 years. It takes place in the north of the Netherlands, in the province of Friesland. This year, the event will be held from 4 through 9 August. The Sneekweek is Europe’s largest inshore sailing regatta. The most important thing for many people, however, is the fun and hugely enjoyable atmosphere for which we are famous! Sailors compete in 40 different classes. Vaurien, Yngling, Optimist, Finn, 2.4mR, Laser and Splash among others offer loyal fleets that keep coming back for more. Sneekweek easily compares to Travemünder Woche or Kiel Week, except it is much more personal. The race committee will mark out the courses using 15- 20 buoys, spread out across different connecting lakes. The audience will come to the Start Island in large numbers, ensuring an excellent atmosphere. When the races are over the party begins! During the Sneekweek the city of Sneek is dazzling more than ever before. In the heart of Sneek you will be entertained by lots of different bands and you can visit the local fun fair. Even the Start Island rocks with music day night and day in a huge partytent. If you would like to take part in Sneek week but you are not sure how to organize your entry and find the right accommodation and a berth for your boat, the Royal Yacht Club Sneek is happy to help! The following Gold and Silver Packages have been put together: The Silver package • Overnight stay at Start Island camp site • Breakfast, lunch, dinner at Restaurant ‘It Foarûnder on the Start Island • Entry fee Sneekweek • Free ferry transfer to the Start Island • Free use of boat ramp near the Start Island • Free use of the Poiesz-ferry that will take you from the island to the supermarket • Hostess available on the island to answer all your questions. Willow Bank Yacht Club has been a fixture on the Cazenovia Lake shoreline since 1949. Originally formed as a sailing club, over the years it has become a summer home to many Cazenovia and surrounding area families. Willow Bank provides its members with outstanding lake frontage and views, docks, private boat launch, picnic area, beach, swimming area, swimming lessons, sailing lessons, children’s programming, Galley take-out restaurant and a lively social program. The adult sailing program at Willow Bank is one of the most active in Central New York. Active racing fleets include: Finn, Flying Dutchman, Laser, Lightning and Sunfish. Each of these fleets host a regatta over the summer and fleet members will often travel to other area clubs for regattas as well. Formal club point races are held on Sundays. These are races to determine a club champion in each fleet. This format provides for a fun competition within the fleets. On Saturdays, the club offers Free-for-All races which allow members to go out and get some experience racing in any class of sailboat. Adults also have sailing opportunities during the week with our Women of Willow Bank fleet sailing and socializing on Wednesday evenings and, on Thursday evenings, we now have an informal sailing and social program for all members. In addition, we offer group adult lessons and private lessons for anyone looking to learn how to sail. For our youngest members we have a great sand beach and a lifeguarded swimming area which allows hours of summer fun! Swimming lessons, sailing lessons, and Junior Fleet racing, round out our youth programs.

FURTHERDEVELS'NENT OF THETUNNY RIG E M H GIFFORDANO C PALNER Gi f ford and P art ners Carlton House Rlngwood Road Hoodl ands SouthamPton S04 2HT UK 360 1, lNTRODUCTION The idea of using a wing sail is not new, indeed the ancient junk rig is essentially a flat plate wing sail. The two essential characteristics are that the sail is stiffened so that ft does not flap in the wind and attached to the mast in an aerodynamically balanced way. These two features give several important advantages over so called 'soft sails' and have resulted in the junk rig being very successful on traditional craft. and modern short handed-cruising yachts. Unfortunately the standard junk rig is not every efficient in an aer odynamic sense, due to the presence of the mast beside the sai 1 and the flat shapewhich results from the numerousstiffening battens. The first of these problems can be overcomeby usi ng a double ski nned sail; effectively two junk sails, one on either side of the mast. This shields the mast from the airflow and improves efficiency, but it still leaves the problem of a flat sail. To obtain the maximumdrive from a sail it must be curved or cambered!, an effect which can produce over 5 more force than from a flat shape. Whilst the per'formanceadvantages of a cambered shape are obvious, the practical way of achieving it are far more elusive. One line of approach is to build the sail from ri gid componentswith articulated joints that allow the camberto be varied Ref 1!.

  • International Finn Association Press Release How BIG Is a Finn Sailor? (Or the Results of the 2009 Census of Finn Sailors Worldwide)
International Finn Association Press Release How BIG is a Finn sailor? (or The results of the 2009 census of Finn sailors worldwide) Ed Wright (GBR), European Champion 2006, ISAF Sailing World Cup winner 2009: “Physically, mentally, technically the Finn is the most all round demanding boat of them all. It's for men, not for the weak. It is the only dinghy a man can sail in the Olympics.” At the end of 2009 the Finn class carried out a survey of its top sailors to accumulate data regarding the weight, height and age when they started sailing the Finn, to try and build a picture of the current fleet and to examine how these factors have changed over the years. For this statistical analysis the target group was the top 50 ranked Finn sailors in the world as well as a whole group of new young sailors coming into the class. The results that followed and its analysis make for interesting reading. Tomas Vika (CZE): The most important thing is that there is no other Olympic dinghy class for guys like me who weigh more than 85kg. The Finn is called the 'heavyweight' dinghy, but it's not so simple: If you are more than 180cm tall and you want to work on your physical condition in a gym you will always weigh more than 85kg and that is the reason why Finn has to stay as an Olympic dinghy in future years. Nachatar Johal (IND): The Finn gives so much flexibility in having a mast and sail designed specifically for yourself.
