Line Integrals in Space V11. Line Integrals in Space 1. Curves in space. In order to generalize to three-space our earlier work with line integrals in the plane, we begin by recalling the relevant facts about parametrized space curves. In 3-space, a vector function of one variable is given as z (1) r(t) = x(t) i + y(t) j + z(t) k . C It is called continuous or differentiable or continuously differentiable if respec- r(t) tively x(t), y(t), and z(t) all have the corresponding property. By placing the vector so that its tail is at the origin, its head moves along a curve C as t varies. y This curve can be described therefore either by its position vector function (1), x or by the three parametric equations (2) x = x(t), y = y(t), z = z(t) . The curves we will deal with will be finite, connected, and piecewise smooth; this means that they have finite length, they consist of one piece, and they can be subdivided into a finite number of smaller pieces, each of which is given as the position vector of a continuously differentiable function (i.e., one whose derivative is continuous). In addition, the curves will be oriented, or directed, meaning that an arrow has been placed on them to indicate which direction is considered to be the positive one. The curve is called closed if a point P moving on it always in the positive direction ultimately returns to its starting position, as in the accompanying picture. We define the line integral of the tangential component of F along an oriented curve C in space in the same way as for the plane. LINE INTEGRALS IN SPACE 3 The different results for the two paths shows that for this field, the line integral between two points depends on the path. 3. Gradient fields and path-independence. The two-dimensional theory developed for line integrals in the plane generalizes easily to three-space. For the part where no new ideas are involved, we will be brief, just stating the results, and in places sketching the proofs. Definition. Let F be a continuous vector field in a region D of space. In particular, the line integral is path-independent. The proof is exactly the same as before — use the chain rule to reduce it to the first fundamental theorem of calculus for functions of one variable. There is also an analogue of the second fundamental theorem of calculus, the one where we first integrate, then differentiate. Theorem. Second fundamental theorem of calculus for line integrals.     Appendix A Short Course in Taylor Series The Taylor series is mainly used for approximating functions when one can identify a small parameter. Expansion techniques are useful for many applications in physics, sometimes in unexpected ways. A.1 Taylor Series Expansions and Approximations In mathematics, the Taylor series is a representation of a function as an infinite sum of terms calculated from the values of its derivatives at a single point. It is named after the English mathematician Brook Taylor. If the series is centered at zero, the series is also called a Maclaurin series, named after the Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin. It is common practice to use a finite number of terms of the series to approximate a function. The Taylor series may be regarded as the limit of the Taylor polynomials.     How to Compute Line Integrals Northwestern, Spring 2013 Computing line integrals can be a tricky business. First, there's two types of line integrals: scalar line integrals and vector line integrals. Although these are related, we compute them in different ways. Also, there's two theorems flying around, Green's Theorem and the Fundamental Theorem of Line Integrals (as I've called it), which give various other ways of computing line integrals. Knowing what to use when and where and why can be confusing, so hopefully this will help to keep things straight. I won't say much about what line integrals mean geometrically or otherwise. Hopefully this is something you have some idea about from class or the book, but I'm always happy to talk about this more in office hours. Here the focus is on computation. Our goal is to be able to evaluate the area of a fence that lies above the curve c and under the graph of f. To do this, we approximate the area in the following way: We first approximate the curve 3 c by line segments [aj; aj+1] and form rectangles (living in R ) with base [aj; aj+1] and height ∗ ∗ f(aj ), where aj is the midpoint of each line segment. Then, we evaluate the area of each of those rectangles and sum the areas. As we make the approximation of the curve more and more accurate, this procedure gives rise to a special type of integral, called line integral with respect to to arc length.
