Jul 06, James DeSantis rated it it was amazing. This is one of the strongest volumes so far. Finishing up our story with Chopper you get his full backstory. It's both heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once. The storyline in the past is the best part though the one running in current time is nearly jut as good. Then we get to a short break where we see Ace, Luffy's brother, which is great. Also more of Smoker is always a plus. Then we get to see Vivi's past with kazo, and it's really well done. Infact I'm loving this opening to the next ma This is one of the strongest volumes so far. Infact I'm loving this opening to the next major arc more than I remember. Theres beginning to be a trend with the story guy appears different island world, fighting mobe to the next. Still fun at this stage but if it continues like this for the next few volumes it might get a little stale. The First Two Volumes we start off with Luffy and Sanji trying to get Nami to the witch doctor on the top of drum drum mountain. When they finally get her there they had another problem the king that lived on drum drum mountain apparently he wanted his castle back from the witch and beef with Luffy and his crew. A battle took place and needless to say Luffy won with the help from Chopper a talking reindeer. Which the guys tried to eat earlier, that made me hold my sides laughing it was so funny. But after the battle Luffy asked him to join and with a little pros- wading from Nami Chopper said yes. They leave the ice land and continued to Princess Vivi's home land. Then we get a glimpse of the leader and second in command of Baroque Works, Mr. One and Mrs All Sundays, briefly. In volume 18 They finally introduced Luffy's older brother Ace. He's not my favorite but he's close to it like number 3. Where they attract to attention form the navy and the attention from his big brother Ace. Who works for Wight Beards crew another pirate captain who wants to be king of the pirates. Aug 22, Amanda rated it it was amazing Shelves: manga. I love these old story arcs in One Piece. They're so gripping, and the characters are so easy to fall in love with and care so much about. Even now that the current story has progressed quite beyond these arcs, I still find the Baroque Works story line to be my favorite. I remember watching the anime for the first time and I didn't know how to handle all the excitement. Not many shows can get me so excited l I love these old story arcs in One Piece. Not many shows can get me so excited like this one! I really wanted these characters to triumph so badly. That's why I love One Piece so much. It's so easy to get caught up in it and to actually care about the people and what happens to them. It's surprising, because even if the character hasn't had much screen time, Eiichiro Oda knows exactly how to get you to care about their plight. Manga isn't my favorite story medium. I prefer actual books or TV shows, but it's still pretty great. The values and lessons that are taught in this manga are definitely ones people need to hear. I can't say that these pirates are my role models, but they are extremely inspiring! Feb 13, Bradley rated it it was amazing Shelves: best-of-manga , manga. This is the best yet. Volume 6 of One Piece had me laughing out loud as I read it in the kitchen. Giggled, laughed and guffawed. Anyways, this is probably going to be the the arc with the most impact. The crew is as large as its ever been and it looks like a showdown is looming on the horizon. I'm all fired up! This one will be unforgettable. Let's go! Just pick up Volume 1 and prepare yourself to get invested in it. Vivi wins character - of - the - book award, closely followed by Dr Kureha. The Quack Doctor arc gets me every damn time. This is my third read, and it still makes me feel things. Having watched the anime before reading the manga, it continues to astound me how to the point Oda is in his work. What took the anime three episodes he does in only a chapter or two of the manga. If you don't know what these mean, you haven't read this far yet. I will briefly mention his one frame comics at the start of most chapters. I've loved many of them because they allow us a peek at characters that have been left behind in the story. I mention them here because the ones in this volume deal with Django from way back with the Black Cat Pirates. The story these weave is particularly funny and I greatly enjoyed it. Luffy and his crew is one of the most successful Japanese cultural products of all time. The first volume of One Piece was published in 1997 and it has been published weekly ever since. It has sold over 430.000.000 million copies worldwide (70.000.000 outside Japan) and it has set already years ago the world record for "The most copies published for the same comic book series, by a single author."1 Although One Piece is the most successful Japanese manga series there are many others -like Dragon Ball or Full Metal Alchemist 2 - with fans around the World, making Japanese manga not only a successful export product, but many believe also a source of Japanese soft power (Bouissou 2006). Garhwal University Uttarakhand Abstract One Piece is a Japanese Manga series drawn by Eiichiro Oda and published serially in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since July 1997 and continuing with the same popularity. It portrays the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, who dreams to become the Pirate King. He gained the properties of rubber after eating a Devil Fruit and is exploring the Grand Line along with his crewmates(The Straw Hat Pirates) in search of the eponymous legendary treasure 'One Piece' left by the former Pirate King Gol D. Roger. What makes this particular manga unique is Oda's representation of Japanese culture and tradition. He also uses some features similar to Ukiyo-e artworks, i.e., the woodblock art prints, which were targeted at the mass audience and also share thematic similarities. The influence of Ukiyo-e and Oda's love for Japanese art, along with its culture, folklore, and myths, is clearly seen in the ongoing Wano country arc. One Piece today has transcended the boundaries of manga, turning into a pop culture sensation in Japan. Volume 14, Issue 1 May 2017 Access and the construction of fan identity: Industry images of anime fandom Lucy Miller, Texas A&M University, USA Abstract: Access to content is a concern for many American anime fans, who view themselves as responsible for attracting content from Japan. In this context, American anime distribution companies have constructed two images of anime fandom: disciplinary and participatory. The former focuses on fans self-policing for the economic success of the industry and the latter positions the company and the fans as equals in a shared community. The online discourse of two anime distribution companies, FUNimation and Crunchyroll, are analyzed for the ways they rhetorically construct these images in order to persuade fans to support the economic success of the industry. Keywords: access, anime, fandom, identification Anime distribution companies in the United States have long sought ways to persuade the niche audience(s) that exists for anime and related fan interests to purchase their products. A look at anime advertisements in the magazine Animag from the late 1980s to early 1990s reveals heavy use of text describing the VHS tapes the anime series and movies were available on, pictures of the tapes themselves, a short blurb about the series or movie, and a small picture of a character or group of characters (O’Mara, 2010). This style of advertising would be familiar to fans of comic books, sci-fi novels, and model kits who might be interested in anime as well. A dedicated anime fandom was not the focus at this time of the industry’s advertising efforts, but magazines in the late 1990s and early 2000s, such as Animerica and Newtype USA, show a shift in advertising strategy to featuring large, glossy pictures of the characters that were meant to attract the attention of anime fans who are assumed to be heavily invested in those characters and the elements that make them up (for more on the relationship between fans and characters, see Azuma, 2009: 53).
