Abstract Background: Among metazoans, retention of functional diet-derived chloroplasts (kleptoplasty) is known only from the sea slug taxon Sacoglossa (Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia). Intracellular maintenance of plastids in the slug's digestive epithelium has long attracted interest given its implications for understanding the evolution of endosymbiosis. However, photosynthetic ability varies widely among sacoglossans; some species have no plastid retention while others survive for months solely on photosynthesis. We present a molecular phylogenetic hypothesis for the Sacoglossa and a survey of kleptoplasty from representatives of all major clades. We sought to quantify variation in photosynthetic ability among lineages, identify phylogenetic origins of plastid retention, and assess whether kleptoplasty was a key character in the radiation of the Sacoglossa. -

This study was carried out, through a total of 271 scuba dives, from 2017 to the beginning of 2020 in four sites located along the Ionian coasts of Sicily: Catania, Aci Trezza, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla. Through a photographic data collection, 95 taxa, representing 17.27% of all Mediterranean marine Heterobranchia, were reported. The order with the highest number of found species was that of Nudibranchia. Among the study areas, Catania, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla had not a remarkable difference in the number of species, while Aci Trezza had the lowest number of species. Moreover, among the 95 taxa, four species considered rare and six non-indigenous species have been recorded. Since the presence of a high diversity of sea slugs in a relatively small area, the central-eastern coast of Sicily could be considered a zone of high biodiversity for the marine Heterobranchia fauna. It seems clear that P. duplicatus capturesEnsis directus by approaching it below the surface of the substratum and by ir ritating the lower portion so that it retreats upward. The snail then coats the razor clam with an envelope of slime which ap pears to have anesthetic properties. Successful capture proba bly depends on the ability of the snail to maintain contact with its prey until anesthesia takes place. FOREWORD Abundant fish and wildlife, unbroken coastal vistas, miles of scenic rivers, swamps and mountains open to exploration, and well-tended forests and fields…these resources enhance the quality of life that makes South Carolina a place people want to call home. We know our state’s natural resources are a primary reason that individuals and businesses choose to locate here. They are drawn to the high quality natural resources that South Carolinians love and appreciate. The quality of our state’s natural resources is no accident. It is the result of hard work and sound stewardship on the part of many citizens and agencies. The 20th century brought many changes to South Carolina; some of these changes had devastating results to the land. However, people rose to the challenge of restoring our resources. Over the past several decades, deer, wood duck and wild turkey populations have been restored, striped bass populations have recovered, the bald eagle has returned and more than half a million acres of wildlife habitat has been conserved. We in South Carolina are particularly proud of our accomplishments as we prepare to celebrate, in 2006, the 100th anniversary of game and fish law enforcement and management by the state of South Carolina. Since its inception, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) has undergone several reorganizations and name changes; however, more has changed in this state than the department’s name. According to the US Census Bureau, the South Carolina’s population has almost doubled since 1950 and the majority of our citizens now live in urban areas. -

Gonor ( 1961) gave in a table all available records of shelled sacoglossan opistho branchs which had ones been described by other researchers from various caulerpan species, when he showed the biology of Lobiger serradifalci (Calcara, 1840) collected from a mat of Caulerpa prolifera in the Harbor of Villefranche in September of 1960. Further, Burn ( 1966) described four species of shelled sacoglossan opisthobranchs, which were found in Octorber of 1964 living on the green alga Caulerpa racemosa, var. turbinata growing on the coral reef near the southeast of Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji. The present author also made an observation on the "caulerpan microfauna" at Cape Shionomisaki in the Province of Kii, Middle Japan in March of 1971 and found fourteen species of opisthobranch gastropods living on Caulerpa brachypus Harvey growing in the lower intertidal zone. -

Again in August 1966, we had an additional collecting of specimens of the same form from about the same habitat as before. Stiliger ornatus, originally known from the Red Sea and from the surface of a tunicate Cynthia momus ( =Herdmania momus), had been the type of the genus Stiliger EHRENBERG, 1831. In some essential respects the specific and generic definitions given by EHREN BERG2> were quite obscure for us. Despite such conditions, however, a considerable number of species of different characters have since been put on record under the name of Stiliger from different seas of the world. The first molecular analysis of the Sacoglossa based on the 16Sr DNA gene (partial), with 39 species and 59 specimens analysed, is presented. A saturation of substitution is observed, as well as conflict in the data concerning cer- tain taxa. Therefore the phylogenetic relationship presented here has to be considered as preliminary. Many results are congruent with the analysis of JENSEN (1996) based on morphological characters. Plakobranchacea are monophyletic. Elysiella pusilla is nested within the genus Elysia and therefore synonymy of Elysiella with Elysia confirmed. The po- sition of Plakobranchus remains unclear, but a closer affinity to Elysia than to Thuridilla seems most likely. Major dif- ferences lie in the paraphyly of the Oxynoacea, but only few members of this taxon have been included. A compilation of available data on food algae is presented and the data are discussed under the light of the phylogenetic relationship presented here. Keywords. A polyvalent and universal tool for genomic studies in gastropod molluscs (Heterobranchia: Tectipleura) Juan Moles1 and Gonzalo Giribet1 1Harvard University Faculty of Arts and Sciences April 28, 2020 Abstract Molluscs are the second most diverse animal phylum and heterobranch gastropods present ~44,000 species. These comprise fascinating creatures with a huge morphological and ecological disparity. Such great diversity comes with even larger phyloge- netic uncertainty and many taxa have been largely neglected in molecular assessments. Genomic tools have provided resolution to deep cladogenic events but generating large numbers of transcriptomes/genomes is expensive and usually requires fresh material. Here we leverage a target enrichment approach to design and synthesize a probe set based on available genomes and transcriptomes across Heterobranchia. Our probe set contains 57,606 70mer baits and targets a total of 2,259 ultra-conserved elements (UCEs). Post-sequencing capture efficiency was tested against 31 marine heterobranchs from major groups, includ- ing Acochlidia, Acteonoidea, Aplysiida, Cephalaspidea, Pleurobranchida, Pteropoda, Runcinida, Sacoglossa, and Umbraculida. The combined Trinity and Velvet assemblies recovered up to 2,211 UCEs in Tectipleura and up to 1,978 in Nudipleura, the most distantly related taxon to our core study group. Total alignment length was 525,599 bp and contained 52% informative sites and 21% missing data. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian inference approaches recovered the monophyly of all orders tested as well as the larger clades Nudipleura, Panpulmonata, and Euopisthobranchia. The successful enrichment of diversely preserved material and DNA concentrations demonstrate the polyvalent nature of UCEs, and the universality of the probe set designed. We believe this probe set will enable multiple, interesting lines of research, that will benefit from an inexpensive and largely informative tool that will, additionally, benefit from the access to museum collections to gather genomic data.
