Calumet Area: an Inventory of the Region's Resources, Illinois
THE CALUMET AREA: AN INVENTORY OF THE REGION=S RESOURCES by Ruth Sparks Seeking natural areas in the Calumet area seems, at first, a hopeless task. Several Chicago neighborhoods and southern suburbs are located here, as well as the industries, service providers, and retail establishments that provide employment for thousands of people. With nearly a million people living here, the human population density is more than 4,000 people per square mile. A few natural nooks and crannies still exist, however, some of which contain unexpected treasures. The area is part of the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Region and includes five townships in southern Cook County and a small fraction of Will County. The core of the area is Lake Calumet, but the Calumet Area as defined in this report extends from the Illinois-Indiana border west to just beyond Tinley Park and Burbank and, north to south, from 95th Street in Chicago to Lansing, covering 185 square miles within the watersheds of the Calumet River and the man-made Calumet Sag Channel. Sizeable tributaries include the Little Calumet River and the Grand Calumet River, which drain the eastern portion of the area before joining to form the Calumet River. Stony Creek, in the northwestern part of the area, has a mild slope and gently flowing water. Midlothian Creek and Tinley Creek are located in hillier country south of the Calumet Sag Channel and so have steeper slopes and faster moving water. The Calumet Union Drainage Ditch is a man-made drainage canal which flows into the upper Little Calumet River. -

In order to prevent or mitigate exposures, a consultation may lead to specific actions, such as restricting use of or replacing water supplies; intensifying environmental sampling; restricting site access; or removing the contaminated material. In addition, consultations may recommend additional public health actions, such as conducting health surveillance activities to evaluate exposure or trends in adverse health outcomes; conducting biological indicators of exposure studies to assess exposure; and providing health education for health care providers and community members. Calumet Open Space Reserve Plan
Calumet Open Space Reserve Plan 2 Dear Chicagoans: The idea for the Calumet Open Space Reserve was born out of the Calumet Area Land Use Plan, a plan for sustainable development of the land around Lake Calumet on the southeast side of Chicago. In attempting to create a plan that promoted industrial redevelopment while protecting wetlands, the opportunity to create an enormous urban nature preserve emerged. As proposed by the Calumet Area Land Use Plan and as detailed in this document, approximately 4,000 acres of the Calumet area are slated to become part of the Calumet Open Space Reserve. These lands and waters support large populations of herons, egrets and other water birds. Marshes and open lands will eventually be interconnected by hiking and biking trails. The acquisition and management of the first round of properties for the Calumet Open Space Reserve is already being undertaken by a coalition of state and local agencies. Residents and workers in the Calumet area will benefit from daily interaction with nature, and all Chicago residents will be able to enjoy what will become the City’s largest nature reserve. Eventually it will be possible to bike from the Loop to the Reserve on protected trails. Together with the City’s Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District and Planned Manufacturing District (PMD) established in the Calumet area to sustain and develop industry, this plan for the Calumet Open Space Reserve will help bring a bright future to Chicago’s southeast side. Historic Resource Study of Pullman National Monument
Chapter 6 EXISTING CONDITIONS The existing conditions and recent alterations in the Town of Pullman and the factory sites have been addressed well in other documents. The Pullman Historic District Reconnaissance Survey completed in 2013 offers clear and succinct assessments of extant buildings in Pullman. Likewise, the Archaeological Overview & Assessment completed in 2017 covers the current conditions of factory remnants. A draft revised National Historic Landmark nomination for Pullman Historic District, completed in August 1997 and on deposit at Pullman National Monument, includes a list of contributing and non-contributing structures.612 For the purposes of this Historic Resources Report, the existing conditions of built environment cultural resources that are not addressed in the aforementioned documents will be considered briefly for their potential significance for research and interpretation. In addition, this section will consider historical documents valuable for studying change over time in the extant built environment and also strategies for using Pullman’s incredibly rich built environment as primary historical evidence. Figure 6.1 offers a visual map showing the approximate age of extant buildings as well as major buildings missing today that were present on the 1892 Rascher Map. Most obvious from this map are the significant changes in the industrial core. Importantly, many of the 1880s buildings that no longer stand were replaced gradually over the twentieth century at first as part of the Pullman Company’s changing technological needs, then after 1959 as part of deindustrialization and the reinvention of the Calumet region. The vast majority of domestic structures from the Town of Pullman’s original construction survive. -

Reuben Wells Locomotive The Reuben Wells Locomotive is a fifty-six ton engine named after the Jeffersonville, Indiana, mechanic who designed it in 1868. This was no ordinary locomotive. It was designed to carry train cars up the steepest rail incline in the country at that time—in Madison, Indi- ana. Before the invention of the Reuben Wells, trains had to rely on horses or a cog system to pull them uphill. The cog system fitted a wheel to the center of the train for traction on steep inclines. You can now see the Reuben Wells at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. HISTORICAL INFORMATION James Llewellyn Larson was born on March 27, 1935 in Madison, Wisconsin to Ruth (Thurber) and LeRoy Larson. While attending high school, Mr. Larson spent many hours at the Chicago and North Western Railway Company's interlocking tower in Madison, Wisconsin where he learned telegraphy. He went to work for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad in 1952 as an agent, telegrapher, and tower operator. In 1953, Mr. Larson began working for the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company as a telegrapher, then as a wire changer. During his 20-year tenure with C&NW, he worked in the Operating Department, was a Train Dispatcher from 1957 to 1959, and then spent eight years as an Assistant Trainmaster and a Trainmaster. He was a System Rules Examiner from 1966 to 1968, an Assistant Division Superintendent from 1968 to 1969, Assistant Superintendent -Transportation from 1969 to 1972, where he managed Operations Center in Chicago. From 1972 to 1973, he was an Assistant Division Master of Transportation on the Twin Cities Division. Mr. Larson was recruited by Amtrak in 1973. During his 25-year tenure with Amtrak he served as Manager of Station Operations, Director of Personnel, Assistant Vice President of Administrative Staff, and Assistant Vice President of Contracts. -

GrTahne d Calumet River Revitalized magine a Grand Calumet River safe for I people, fish, birds and wildlife to utilize and enjoy. With the latest clean up efforts, performed under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative's Legacy Act by a team of scientists and engineers, such a vision is closer to being realized than ever before. Since 2009, 2.3 million pounds of contaminated sediment have been dredged (removed) or capped (isolated from the environment). The team has restored acres of wetland habitat along the river with native trees, grasses, and other plants, providing food and shelter to local fish and wildlife. As a result of this work, a cleaner Grand Calumet River will run through the globally rare dune and swale habitat found in northwest Indiana. For more information, contact Caitie McCoy at (312) 886-1430 or [email protected]. June 2013 SEDIMENT CLEANUP OPERATIONS 1. What kinds of contaminants are being removed from the river? Sediment contaminated with heavy metals, oil, grease, and chemicals like PAHs and PCBs is being removed from the river. Because the contamination is so deep, deeper layers of sediment will be capped with a chemical-physical barrier. A lot of the pollution was created by industrial processes and discharged into the river. 2. How long will the work take? Work started in 2009. The next phase of the cleanup from Kennedy Ave to Cline Ave started spring 2013 and will take approximately three years. The rest of the river will be cleaned in phases, and could take about 10 years, assuming non-federal sponsors can help fund phases that have not yet been addressed. -
