  • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

  • Crossmedia Adaptation and the Development of Continuity in the Dc Animated Universe
“INFINITE EARTHS”: CROSSMEDIA ADAPTATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTINUITY IN THE DC ANIMATED UNIVERSE Alex Nader A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2015 Committee: Jeff Brown, Advisor Becca Cragin © 2015 Alexander Nader All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeff Brown, Advisor This thesis examines the process of adapting comic book properties into other visual media. I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing.

John Constantine and the homoaffective question: an analysis of LGBTI+ representations in superhero comics and animations JOHN CONSTANTINE AND THE HOMOAFFECTIVE QUESTION: AN ANALYSIS OF LGBTI+ REPRESENTATIONS IN SUPERHERO COMICS AND ANIMATIONS JOHN CONSTANTINE E A QUESTÃO HOMOAFETIVA: UMA ANÁLISE SOBRE REPRESENTAÇÕES LGBTI+ EM QUADRINHOS DE SUPER-HERÓIS E ANIMAÇÕES JOHN CONSTANTINE Y LA PREGUNTA HOMOAFFECTIVE: UN ANÁLISIS DE LAS REPRESENTACIONES LGBTI+ EN CÓMICS DE SUPERHÉROES Y ANIMACIONES Mário Jorge de PAIVA1 ABSTRACT: This article is an analysis of LGBTI + representations in comic books, superheroes, and children's animations. In particular, we will approach the character of DC Comics John Constantine, bisexual, because he is a hero of a major publisher, appearing alongside Batman, Superman etc. Our methodology is qualitative, based on a broad contribution containing: Michel Foucault, Sarane Alexandrian, James Green, João Trevisan, Dandara Cruz among others. Our conclusions involve seeing how there has really been a profound change over time. If before this type of question could not be addressed as much, or could not be addressed explicitly, today there is a greater opening for representations of LGBTI + characters. KEYWORDS: LGBTI+. Comics. Animations. John Constantine. Hellblazer.

FREE JOHN CONSTANTINE HELLBLAZER: DEATH AND CIGARETTES PDF Giuseppe Camuncoli,Simon Bisley,Peter Milligan | 264 pages | 09 Jul 2013 | DC Comics | 9781401240936 | English | United States John Constantine, Hellblazer: Death and Cigarettes by Peter Milligan John Constantine had no intention of tracking down his long-lost nephew, despite the promise John made to his dead mom. But mysterious circumstances and a series of murders set Constantine out to Ireland in search of his forgotten relative. The long-running British magician known as Hellblazer was recently rebooted into the magic-centric DC universe, where scruffy, snarky John Constantine stands at the center of the usual gang of costumed crusaders. In this final volume of stories from the original series, Constantine's mature-audience swan song is strung together from several shorter works that, if nothing else, get to the center of the kind of supernatural grit Hellblazer specialized in. In one story, Constantine investigates a ghostly suicide bridge. In others, more family problems, including a long-lost relative, demand his attention and suggest that black magic is a curse that runs John Constantine Hellblazer: Death and Cigarettes a family's DNA. In the finale no spoiler here Constantine grapples with his own death, dealing with it in the same way he faces everything John Constantine Hellblazer: Death and Cigarettes through disingenuousness and finely-tuned planning to beat the supernatural on its own terms. As usual, the character of Constantine waivers between off-putting charm and sincere untrustworthiness. One of the hallmarks of the Hellblazer series was Constantine's real-time aging, and here, as a tired magic practitioner floating around 60, both he and the series wear their age well.
