What’s the Deal With Blood Drives? By: Reagan White Bionic arms, legs and hearts can all be manufactured in labs around the world. Even lab-grown ears can be produced with the help of science! Cutting-edge technologies, such as 3-D printers designed to print synthetic body parts, are starting to combat the scarcity of organ donors. With all the technological progress that has been made, it is reasonable to assume that giving blood is a thing of the past. Blood, however, is more complex to replicate than many other organic tissues—and thus is always in demand. According to the Red Cross, 4.5 million Americans receive a blood transfusion every year. Due to the COVID-19 situation, however, this number is much higher. Donors who test positive for COVID-19 antibodies are especially valued, as blood from these individuals can be used as a treatment for the disease. For those interested, the Red Cross website has a locator feature that shows all active blood donating sites within a specified ZIP Code. If giving blood is such an impactful way to help the community, why don’t more people donate? Well, it is not that simple. According to the Red Cross, only 37% of people are eligible for donations, and of that number, only 10% donate regularly. Iron deficiency, travel outside the US and certain medications can all exempt someone from donating blood. The complete list of exemptions can be found on the Red Cross website. For those who cannot donate blood, hosting a blood drive is another great way to give back to the community. Fort Mill High School Senior Ethan Simpson hosted a drive this past fall, and said of his experience, “Hosting a blood drive was awesome. For those interested in participating in a blood drive, the I receive blood products regularly, and since I can't donate myself, that was my way of giving back.” In order to host a drive, the American Red Cross’s app, pictured above, offers a great Red Cross details that the host must provide a location, volunteers and of course the host must advertise in order to pull in donors. way to find out time and place. By: Evelyn Ealey Photo courtesy of Gracie Johnson -Mo Nowadays, everyone is on high alert for even the slightest sicknesses, and it has become a top priority for people to take extra care of their bodies and immune systems. Whether it is the flu or a stomach bug, there are numerous natural remedies that can help boost immunity. Foods such as turmeric, green tea and ginger can be found in local grocery stores and can be used to combat a nasty cold. However, there is one powerful berry that is taking the world by storm: elderberry. This small fruit packs a powerful punch, and it is being used all over the country as a remedy for stomach aches, colds and even the flu. Elderberry is a small, dark purple berry that is native to almost all seven continents and has been used by ancient people for centuries. Today, elderberry is typically made into a syrup that is taken by the teaspoon similar to a cough medicine. The antioxidants that are found in elderberries are what make them so effective in treating diseases. Although elderberry is strong, it cannot cure illnesses; it has only been proven to alleviate symptoms. Multiple studies have shown that people with cold and flu symptoms who have taken elderberry syrup saw significant improvement of symptoms in just two to four days. Elderberry is not just for sicknesses, though; it can also be beneficial for one’s skin. The American Nutrition Association has said that Vitamin A found in elderberries can help prevent acne and reduce wrinkles. It may seem that elderberry is difficult to find, but it is much more common than one might think. Sweet’s Syrup is a locally-owned business that provides homemade elderberry syrup to the Fort Mill community. The company’s syrup is made with organic ingredients including cloves, raw honey, cinnamon, ginger and of course; elderberry. Sweet’s Syrup can be found at the Peach Stand, Juice Bar and the Tega Cay Pharmacy. A large franchise that has hopped on the elderberry trend is Clean Juice. Clean Juice sells elderberries in the form of cold-pressed juice wellness shots and in an elderberry bowl. The wellness shot consists of organic apple, lemon, ginger and elderberry, while the bowl has a blend of various fruits and elderberries. Many people may be skeptical to try elderberry for the first time, but the benefits speak for themselves. Junior Evan Mucciarone says, “I would try it [elderberry] because berries have properties that are generally good for humans by both ingesting and topical treatments.” Trying a new remedy can always be a little nerve-wracking, but helping a small business while also improving the immune system is worth it in the end. Especially during this time, the world could use all of the health benefits it can get, and elderberry is definitely worth a shot (pun intended). Elderberry is the newest health remedy taking the world by storm. This small berry can pack a powerful punch and combat even the nastiest cold.

Due to social distancing regulations, gatherings of large crowds in music venues is strictly prohibited in the United States. When asked what she missed most about live concerts, Sophomore Loch McNeely said, “Being with a group of friends and having fun.” Many artists have attempted supplements for live concerts, and their fanbase heavily appreciates them for doing so. Since August of 2018, NPR Music company has been releasing a video series of live concerts known as Tiny Desk Concerts. The series contains features from well-known bands and solo artists, filmed in a music video type of manner. However, it was not until the effects of the pandemic kicked in that the series modified its name to Tiny Desk Home Concerts. Referred to as, “quarantine concerts,” NPR provides fans with an inclusive, virtual and safe experience of their favorite artists. The location of the concerts change based on the preference of the musician, therefore settings span from libraries to living rooms. A majority of the performances are held in the musicians’ own homes to promote the limitation of traveling during a pandemic. Recently, the popular solo artist Dua Lipa performed a few of her hit singles in a Tiny Desk Concert music video. The video received over 9,000,000 views on Youtube and encouraged the creation of videos for several upcoming artists. Miley Cyrus produced her own rendition of the at home concert while performing personal and covered songs. This also gained popularity, catching the attention of Rolling Stones Magazine and Billboard. As difficult as it may be to supplement the thrilling experience of concerts, fans appreciate the attempt to continue producing musical content. For the foreseeable future, NPR Music plans to continue to work from home, providing videos featuring the most relevant artists. Until music venues can be flooded once again, the at-home concert experience is not so bad. While the pandemic has shut down concerts, NPR Music Company is providing the next best thing. At-home concerts highlight popular artists with music videos.
