Near, and Jakob Vinther ABSTRACT Dating the tree of life is a core endeavor in evolutionary biology. Rates of evolution are fundamental to nearly every evolutionary model and process. Rates need dates. There is much debate on the most appropriate and reasonable ways in which to date the tree of life, and recent work has highlighted some confusions and complexities that can be avoided. Whether phylogenetic trees are dated after they have been estab- lished, or as part of the process of tree finding, practitioners need to know which cali- brations to use. We emphasize the importance of identifying crown (not stem) fossils, levels of confidence in their attribution to the crown, current chronostratigraphic preci- sion, the primacy of the host geological formation and asymmetric confidence intervals. Here we present calibrations for 88 key nodes across the phylogeny of animals, rang- ing from the root of Metazoa to the last common ancestor of Homo sapiens. Close attention to detail is constantly required: for example, the classic bird-mammal date (base of crown Amniota) has often been given as 310-315 Ma; the 2014 international time scale indicates a minimum age of 318 Ma. McFadden ^ The Stratiomyidae or soldier flies are represented in America north of Mexico by approximately 237 species distributed through 37 genera. Prior to this study, larvae have been described for only 21 species representmg 15 genera. In addition to the lack of adequate descriptions and keys, classification has seldom been attempted and a phylogenetic treatment of the larvae has never been presented. The present study has been undertaken with several goals in mind: to rear and describe (1) as many species as possible; (2) to redescribe all previously described larvae of North American species; and (3), on the basis of larval characters, to attempt to define various taxo- nomic units and show phylogenetic relationships withm the family and between it and other closely related familes. Any attempt to establish subfamilial and generic lunits must be regarded as tentative. This is especially true in the present study since larvae of so many species of Stratiomyidae remain unknown. Undoubtably, as more species are reared, changes mil have to be made in keys and definitions of taxa. The keys have been prepared chiefly for identification of last mstar larvae. The two species differ by the shape of the ocellar tubercle and the width of the frons. Comments about differences between the holotype of P. antiqua and the original description are given. Key words: Dominican amber, Mexican amber, Pachygastrinae Introduction Evenhuis (1994) listed 24 species of fossil Stratiomyidae of which only one, Pachygaster antiqua James, 1971, belongs in the subfamily Pachygastrinae. This species was described from Mexican amber. We describe a second fossil species of Pachygaster Meigen from Dominican amber, which we compare with P. antiqua and correct some inaccuracies in the description of latter. Dominican amber originates from the Dominican Republic, Hispaniola, Greater Antilles. The deposits of this fossil resin are of early to middle Miocene (15–20 Mya) age (Iturralde-Vinent & MacPhee 1996, Iturralde-Vinent 2001). The fossil flora and fauna trapped in the amber indicates that the resin-producing tree was part of a moist tropical forest (Poinar & Poinar 1999). -

JAMES WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY PULLMAN, WASHINGTON STRATIOMYIDAE INTRODUCTION Comparatively few records of Stratiomyidae from Micronesia appear in the literature. Three species were originally described from Micronesia: Lopho teles plumula Loew, from the Radak Chain of the Marshall Islands, and Para cechorismenus guamae James and Cephalochrysa infuscata James from Guam. Bohart and Gressitt (1951) 2 have recorded H ermetia illucens (Linnaeus) and Microchrysa flaviventris (Wiedemann), and James (1950) has added Wallacea albiseta de Meijere, probably the subspecies herein described as new, from Guam. In works dealing with other Pacific areas, Hardy and James have treated the very limited Hawaiian fauna (Insects of Hawaii 10: 307-319, 1%0), and Bezzi, Ricardo, Lindner, James, and others have dealt, either frag mentarily or comprehensively, with the family as it occurs in Fiji, Samoa, some of the islands of the East Indies, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, and Okinawa. The present study is based on a collection of more than 800 specimens rep resenting 24 species. By way of comparison, James recorded 30 species from the Solomon Islands, and Lindner, 22 species from Ceylon. It is noteworthy that all Micronesian species are either known or probable scavengers in the larval stage; aquatic Stratiomyinae and aquatic tribes of Clitellariinae are entirely absent from the known fauna. The same is true of the Hawaiian and Samoan faunas, but not of those of the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Fiji, or even Okinawa, from which island one stratiomyine is recorded. Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract The Pachygastrinae are a large, globally distributed subfamily of soldier flies (Diptera, Stratiomyidae). Despite being widespread, they have poor representation in museum collections and are mostly known from larvae collected under the bark of fallen logs. All seven Canadian genera and nine of the eleven Canadian species are herein reviewed and keyed. An updated checklist to the Canadian species is presented. Twenty-one new provincial records are reported, and four species are recorded from Canada for the first time: Cosmariomyia pallidipennis (Williston), Gowdeyana punctifera (Malloch), Neopachygaster vitrea Hull and Pachygaster pulchra Loew. This increases the known fauna in Canada from seven to 11 species. The first detailed description of larvae of Ptecticus Loew is presented for P. brunettii and P. flavifemoratus from West Malaysia. There are pronounced morphological and behavioural differences be tween the last larval instar, inside whose cast cuticle the pupa remains, and earlier instars. The larval mouthparts are similar to those of other known Stratiomyidae larvae but may display a set of autapomor- phic characters. The structure of the mandibular-maxillary complex suggests that larvae of Ptecticus are micropantophagous scavengers that feed chiefly upon microorganisms. The larvae of both species are as sociated with decaying bamboo shoots; P. brunettii inhabits the space between the culm sheaths and P. flavifemoratus lives in water-filled shoot stumps. This is the first record of aquatic Sarginae larvae and egg plastron in the Stratiomyidae. The life cycle and behaviour of P. brunettii and P. flavifemoratus is de scribed and the resource partitioning of stratiomyids and xylomyids associated with bamboo is discussed. INTRODUCTION Stratiomyidae and Xylomyidae are the only families among the lower Brachycera (Or- thorrapha) in which the pupae are formed within the hardened skin of the last larval instar (overview see McFadden, 1967; Rozkošný, 1982; Smith, 1989). -
