Mundane History () Written and Directed by Anocha Suwichakornpong Produced by Soros Sukhum, Anocha Suwichakornpong “Twinkle, twinkle, little star. How I wonder what you are…………….. ” 1 Synopsis Mundane History by Anocha Suwichakornpong Mundane History records the life of Ake, a young man confined to his bed after an accident leaves him paralyzed from the waist down. Ake is being cared for by Pun, a male nurse who is hired by Thanin, the stoic patriarch of the family. The main house in the family compound is a grand old edifice that has seen better days. The general house duties are attended to by a handful of servants who share a smaller separate house built into the same compound. Utilizing the non-linear structure, the film focuses on the mundane, almost insignificant details of everyday life. But little by little, we begin to understand what secrets lie beneath the peaceful façade of the house… 2 Director’s Statement Mundane History by Anocha Suwichakornpong What constitutes history? When one writes about history, how does one choose which information to include and which to omit? Can mundane activities be counted as history? What happens if the private is public and the mundane is history? There are four main characters in this ‘narrative’ -- the father, the disabled son, the male nurse and the house itself. Mundane History functions as a family drama and an allegory of Thai society, where beneath the veneer of ‘normality’, you can just tell that something isn’t quite right. This film is my maiden voyage into the troubled waters that is contemporary Thailand.

สิ้นเมษาฝนตกมาปรอยปรอย IN APRIL THE FOLLOWING YEAR, THERE WAS A FIRE A film by Wichanon Somumjarn Produced by Anocha Suwichakornpong and Maenum Chagasik IN APRIL THE FOLLOWING YEAR, THERE WAS A FIRE Specification Title: In April the Following Year, There Was a Fire Duration: 76 minutes Language: Thai, regional Thai dialect (northeastern/Isan) Shooting Locations: Bangkok, Khon Kaen Director/Screenwriter: Wichanon Somumjarn Producers: Anocha Suwichakornpong, Maenum Chagasik Director of Photography: Ming Kai Leung Screenplay: Wichanon Somumjarn Editor: Machima Ungsriwong Sound Supervisor: Akritchalerm Kalyanamitr Format: HD, Color, Dolby SR Genre: Drama Production Company: Electric Eel Films IN APRIL THE FOLLOWING YEAR, THERE WAS A FIRE Synopsis Nhum is a construction foreman working in Bangkok. The political instability in Thailand has made its presence felt in all business sectors. Nhum suddenly finds himself out of jobs. He decides to leave Bangkok to go back to his hometown in the northeast of Thailand to attend his high school friend’s wedding during the Thai New Year in April -- which also happens to be the hottest month of the year. Nhum reunites with his old friends at the wedding in Khon Kaen. He also runs into Joy, a senior from his high school whom he used to have a crush on, and is now an office woman. They exchange their phone numbers. Suddenly, the film turns into another direction. Some interview footage of the director’s father and brother is included, and we learn that the film is a semi-autobiography of the director’s life. The character of Nuhm is, nonetheless, as much a construct as it is real.

  • Haptic Sound and Embodied Memory in the Films of Apichatpong Weer
PHILIPPA LOVATT ‘Every drop of my blood sings our song. There, can you hear it?’: Haptic sound and embodied memory in the films of Apichatpong Weerasethakul ABSTRACT KEYWORDS Frequently drawing on avant-garde formal strategies, bringing together per- sound sonal, social and cultural memories in a cinematic collage, the films of Thai haptic director Apichatpong Weerasethakul recreate what Richard Dyer has called ‘the phenomenology texture of memory’ (Dyer 2010). Using narrative techniques such as repetition, affect memory fragmentation, and convergence (as different threads of a narrative resonate Thai cinema uncannily both within and across the films), the work expresses what the Apichatpong process of remembering feels like, how the warp and weft of the past con- Weerasethakul tinuously moves through and shapes the present just as the present shapes our spectatorship memories of the past. While sound design in classical cinema often privileges the embodiment voice, lowering ambient sound in order to ensure intelligibility while creating an illusion of naturalism, in these films ‘natural’ ambient or environmental sounds are amplified to the extent that they become almost denaturalized, thus The New Soundtrack 3.1 (2013): 61–79 DOI: 10.3366/sound.2013.0036 # Edinburgh University Press www.euppublishing.com/SOUND 62 Philippa Lovatt heightening their affective power. In Blissfully Yours (Sud sanaeha, 2002), Tropical Malady (Sud pralad, 2004), Syndromes and a Century (Sang sattawat, 2006) and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Loong Boonmee raleuk chaat, 2010) the sound of the environment is often so dominant that it dismantles our reliance on the verbal or the linguistic to ground our understanding of what is happening in the narrative, and instead encourages (or rather insists upon) an embodied, phenomenological, engagement with the sensuality of the scene.
