Wester Ross Scenic Photo Project: How to find the locations and take the photos

Thank you for taking part in Scottish Natural Heritage’s pilot photography project. The following pages have detailed descriptions of the precise viewpoint locations, including where to stand at and the direction to face, and a sample photo. At the viewpoint, line up with the example photo. Please take the photo using the ‘point and shoot’ method, without zooms or filters. Once you have taken the photos, please upload them at the scenic photo map. Docherty Stand at the information board and take the photograph facing west towards Loch Maree. 206554.4 57.58353 859450.6 -5.2375 NH06555945 This is one of the gateways to Wester Ross National Scenic Area and is one of the first sights many visitors will have of the area. Roadside layby on the A832 at Slattadale. This view of Loch Maree, with woodland in front, is Scenic taken from the centre of Viewpoint 2 the wooded edge of the Upper car parking looking roughly 188662.9 57.68593 NG88667176 park at eastwards. This is a mix of 871766.6 -5.54692 Slattadale natural woodland which has been growing since the plantation was felled. It changes the view seasonally and longer term, as the trees grow.

Scenic This photo was taken Viewpoint 4 facing north east, behind Coille na the information board. 200168.2 57.63072 Glas-leitre There is new native 865022.5 -5.34872 NH00166502 Car park woodland along the Beinn Eighe shores of Loch Maree so NNR over the next few decades it could become a very different view. It also varies considerably with the seasons.

This view is likely to alter slowly with changes in vegetation. Informal car park signed as a viewpoint, on the north (loch) side of the A896, at Upper Loch Scenic Torridon. Viewpoint The photo is from the 5b eastern edge of the car 186571.3 57.52788 854246.6 -5.56649 NG86575424 Loch park, looking towards the Torridon village of Torridon. This is looking east a crofting settlement with improved pasture in front of the houses and rougher grazing on the slopes behind.

Car park on the seaward side of the A832, at the viewpoint above the Scenic village of Gairloch. 180424.2 57.73267 Viewpoint 6 877421 -5.68996 NG80427742 Gairloch is a bustling Gairloch village that may experience change over the next few years.

Please remember that these locations are all public parking areas so there may be vehicles moving around while you’re there. You will need to be outside to take the photograph so be prepared for the weather, ground conditions and other outdoor hazards.
