Cumulated Bibliography of Biographies of Ocean Scientists Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives Revised December 3, 2001. Preface This bibliography attempts to list all substantial autobiographies, biographies, festschrifts and obituaries of prominent oceanographers, marine biologists, fisheries scientists, and other scientists who worked in the marine environment published in journals and books after 1922, the publication date of Herdman’s Founders of Oceanography. The bibliography does not include newspaper obituaries, government documents, or citations to brief entries in general biographical sources. Items are listed alphabetically by author, and then chronologically by date of publication under a legend that includes the full name of the individual, his/her date of birth in European style(day, month in roman numeral, year), followed by his/her place of birth, then his date of death and place of death. Entries are in author-editor style following the Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 14th ed., 1993). Citations are annotated to list the language if it is not obvious from the text. Annotations will also indicate if the citation includes a list of the scientist’s papers, if there is a relationship between the author of the citation and the scientist, or if the citation is written for a particular audience. This bibliography of biographies of scientists of the sea is based on Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre’s bibliography of biographies first published annually beginning with issue 4 of the History of Oceanography Newsletter (September 1992). It was supplemented by a bibliography maintained by Eric L. Mills and citations in the biographical files of the Archives of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. -

It is now just 3 months ago that I packed my valise and said good bye to Askov to make a journey to Denmark. It was with some mixed feelings. Half my life I have lived here and my other half over there in the old country. Ah, but off on the "steam horse" I went to Minneapolis where my daughter, Astrid, and I paid a visit to the Scandinavian-American Line's Office ~nd were received very kindly by Mr. Ellingsen, the line agent. Gold foil figures could have played a role in prehistoric Scandinavia invitation systems, the identification of a person’s true identity and in the dependency upon magnates in southern Scandinavia during the 6th–8th centuries AD. The gold foil figures may have been tokens issued by the magnate and served as invitations to special events, at a time when there was apparently a preoccupation with organising cult activities at the elite residences and restricting places at and admission to such events. The figures did not guarantee that it was the right guests who arrived on these occasions, but presenting this type of token may have minimised the risk of allowing in impostors. -

4 Denmark Alexandra Andhov, Jakob Wested and Rasmus Kristian Feldthusen 4.1 Introduction Before we start to describe and analyse the legal and economic back- ground for start-up formation, we would like to briefly introduce you to the Kingdom of Denmark and provide you with some basic information and business and cultural context. The Kingdom of Denmark (Denmark) is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe bordering the Baltic and North Seas. The country consists of a large peninsula and more than 100 islands referred to as the Danish Archipelago, including the territories of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, and the capital is Copenhagen. Other large cities include Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg and Esbjerg. Denmark has great business relationships with its neighbours, Germany, Sweden and Norway. The population of Denmark is above 5.8 million (July 2018 estimate) and lives on a total area of 43,096 square kilometres. The official language is Danish. Other minority languages in Denmark are Faroese, German and Greenlandic. Additionally, there is a great English language competency in Denmark and the majority of the population speaks English. It is important to emphasize that it is possible to communicate with public officers in English and many official documents are in English, which represents a great advantage for businesses and entrepreneurs from all over the world. Since 1849, the government system is a constitutional monarchy with the Queen as the chief of state and the prime minister as the head of government.
