Art versus Propaganda?: Georgia Douglas Johnson and Eulalie Spence as Figures who Fostered Community in the Midst of Debate Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Caroline Roberta Hill, B.A. Graduate Program in Theatre The Ohio State University 2019 Thesis Committee: Jennifer Schlueter, Adviser Beth Kattelman Copyright by Caroline Roberta Hill 2019 Abstract The Harlem Renaissance and New Negro Movement is a well-documented period in which artistic output by the black community in Harlem, New York, and beyond, surged. On the heels of Reconstruction, a generation of black artists and intellectuals—often the first in their families born after the thirteenth amendment—spearheaded the movement. Using art as a means by which to comprehend and to reclaim aspects of their identity which had been stolen during the Middle Passage, these artists were also living in a time marked by the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan and segregation. It stands to reason, then, that the work that has survived from this period is often rife with political and personal motivations. Male figureheads of the movement are often remembered for their divisive debate as to whether or not black art should be politically charged. The public debates between men like W. E. B. Du Bois and Alain Locke often overshadow the actual artistic outputs, many of which are relegated to relative obscurity. Black female artists in particular are overshadowed by their male peers despite their significant interventions. Two pioneers of this period, Georgia Douglas Johnson (1880-1966) and Eulalie Spence (1894-1981), will be the subject of my thesis. -

A SUBALTERN READING ON THE HEART OF A WOMAN G. GODWIN Ph.D Research Scholar, Department of English, AVVM Sri Pushpam College, Poondi, Thanjavur 613 503. (TN) INDIA The Heart of a Women is the fourth volume of Maya Angelou’s continuing autobiography out of seven volumes. Maya Angelou narrated from the point of view of a woman who tells more about the same story that she told in her previous volumes. This volume opens by some of detailed notes of historical reflections intended to locate Maya Angelou’s time and place, where the African-Americans were treated as Subalterns, because being born Black is itself a liability in a world ruled by White criterions of beauty which imprisons the child Maya a priori in the cage of ugliness. This paper throws lights on the Subalterns and their pain and struggles in the voice of Maya Angelou. This volume traces Maya’s spiritual, psychological and political odyssey as she emerges from a disturbing and oppressive young years to become a prominent figure in contemporary American literature. She has clearly portrayed the hardships associated with lower-class African American life. Key Words: Racism, Oppression, Struggle, Hardship, Subaltern. INTRODUCTION The voice of African American community and the African American Women is the main concern in the serial autobiographies of Maya Angelou. Particularly in the fourth volume The Heart of a Woman, she records her marginalized experience and oppressed consciousness. This recording leads her to the formation of politicized consciousness and self-identity. Her autobiography acts as resistance to those who denied the possibility of full life to the people in America. -

Lying means saying a statement that he/she knows themselves as false to others to whom he/she want to perceive it as true. It can be explained by different psychological principles of psychodynamic theory, humanistic theory, behavior theory etc. Lying arises from hedonistic nature of humans that to avoid pain and to increase pleasure. It can be also seen that we lies not only for personal gains but also for others gain too. That is to avoid harm affecting ourselves and to avoid hurting others. Lying can be accepted if it saves someone’s life-ourselves or of others. Keywords: Psychological factors, Lie INTRODUCTION: Lying is a form of deceiving others verbally. It is a part of our behavioral response in communicating with others. It has long been a part of everyday life. We can't get through even a single day without telling lies. It is a consistent feature of human social behavior. We are not aware of all the lies we tell. We people lie most the time in our daily life, afraid of other people finding out the truth about us. We lie mostly to our parents, partners, friends, supervisors and so on to whomever else with whom we interact. -

Real Lies, White Lies and Gray Lies: Towards a Typology of Deception Erin Bryant Despite its aversive label, deception is an extremely common social behavior that the average person performs on a daily basis (Camden, Motley, & Wilson, 1984; DePaulo, Kashy, Kirkendol, Wyer, & Epstein, 1996; Turner, Edgley, & Omstead, 1975). In fact, the use of white lies is so widespread they are often viewed as a form of communication competency that is necessary to successfully negotiate social interactions (Camden et al, 1984; Di Battista, 1994; Knapp & Comedena, 1975; Knapp, Hart, & Dennis, 1974). This study aimed to explore how college students perceive white lies and differentiate them from other types of lies using in-depth interview and focus group data. Participants' evaluations of deception indicate three main types of lies: real lies, white lies, and gray lies. -

We knew only that they were different, to be feared, and in that fear was included the hostility of the powerless against the powerful, the poor against the rich, the worker against the employer; and the poorly dressed against the well dressed. This is Stamps, a small town in Arkansas, in the United States, in the 1930s. The population is almost evenly divided between black and white and totally divided by where and how they live. As Maya Angelou says, there is very little contact between the two races. Their houses are in different parts of town and they go to different schools, colleges, stores, and places of entertainment. When they travel, they sit in separate parts of buses and trains. After the American Civil War (1861—65), slavery was ended in the defeated Southern states, and many changes were made by the national government to give black people more rights. -

David Bowie and Transmedia Stardom Addressing the interart, intertextual, and intermedial dimensions of David Bowie’s sonic and visual legacy, this book considers more than five decades of a career invested with a star’s luminosity that shines well beyond the remit of pop music. The book approaches the idea of the star David Bowie as a medium in transit, under- going constant movement and change. Within the context of celebrity studies, the con- cept of stardom provides an appropriate frame for an examination of Bowie’s transmedial activity, especially given his ongoing iconic signification within the celestial realm. While Bowie has traversed many mediums, he has also been described as a medium, which is consistent with the way he has described himself. With contributions from a wide range of disciplinary areas and countries, each chapter brings a fresh perspective on the concept of stardom and the conceptual significance of the terms ‘mediation’ and ‘navigation’ as they relate to Bowie and his career. Containing a multitude of different approaches to the stardom and mediation of David Bowie, this book will be of interest to those studying celebrity, audio and visual legacy, and the relationships between different forms of media. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Celebrity Studies. Ana Cristina Mendes is an Assistant Professor of English Studies in the School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. First to fourth century Greek novelists often play with the idea of their protagonists as wanderers and exiles, drawing comparisons with the Odyssey and its hero Odysseus. -

She grew up in St. Louis and Stamps, Arkansas. She is an author, poet, historian, songwriter, playwright, dancer, stage and screen producer, director, performer, singer, and civil rights activist. She is best known for her autobiographical books: All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes (1986), The Heart of a Woman (1981), Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas (1976), Gather Together in My Name (1974), and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), which was nominated for the National Book Award. Among her volumes of poetry are A Brave and Startling Truth (Random House, 1995), The Complete Collected Poems of Maya Angelou (1994), Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now (1993), Now Sheba Sings the Song (1987), I Shall Not Be Moved (1990), Shaker, Why Don't You Sing? (1983), Oh Pray My Wings Are Gonna Fit Me Well (1975), and Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie (1971), which was nominated for the Pulitzer prize. Enlarge Picture In 1959, at the request of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou became the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. From 1961 to 1962 she was associate editor of The Arab Observer in Cairo, Egypt, the only English-language news weekly in the Middle East, and from 1964 to 1966 she was feature editor of the African Review in Accra, Ghana. She returned to the U.S. in 1974 and was appointed by Gerald Ford to the Bicentennial Commission and later by Jimmy Carter to the Commission for International Woman of the Year. -
