Inyo National Forest Hiking & Camping with Dogs Dogs are always welcome on the Inyo National Forest. Please keep them under control at all times to respect the resource and other visitors. We recommend you keep your dog on a leash. Never leave them unattended. Dogs allowed to roam freely can frighten or injure wildlife, disturb other forest visitors, and create impacts to the natural resources. A dog that is excessively barking, aggressive, or chasing animals is not under control. In Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite National Parks, dogs are prohibited in the wilderness. Check with the National Park Service for comprehensive regulations. For a successful trip with your dog, please follow these rules: In Campgrounds: Keep dogs on a leash 6’ or shorter. Geocaching 101 Geocaching is an activity that will get you and your family outside and provide countless hours of adventure and enjoyment—in your local community, in Connecticut, throughout the United States, and even worldwide! If you still have questions after participating in our program and reviewing this information, we suggest you go to www.geocaching.com and search their Help Center. Membership on the geocaching site is free to all and offers plenty of opportunities to get you started on a lifetime hobby. What is geocaching? Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates for latitude and longitude and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. What is the meaning of the word “geocaching?” “Geocaching” refers to GEO for geography, and to CACHING, the process of hiding a cache. The term “cache” is used in hiking/camping as a hiding place for concealing and preserving provisions. Where are geocaches located? Geocaches can be found all over the world. It is common for geocachers to hide caches in locations that are important to them, reflecting a special interest or skill of the cache owner. These locations can be quite diverse. They may be at your local park, at the end of a long hike, underwater or on the side of a city street. What does a geocache look like? Geocaches vary greatly in size and appearance. You will see everything from large, clear plastic containers to film canisters to a fake rock with a secret compartment.

Passage Creek Bridge Picnic Area: The day use area includes picnic tables, vault toi- lets, open fields, access to several well blazed and maintained hiking trails (most notably the Massanutten/Tuscarora Trail), and fishing in Passage Creek. Students will be able to read compass degrees and follow a set-up course. 3. Students will be able to use a GPS unit to find at least three caches. Compass Directions • Four cardinal directions are north, east, south, and west. • Compass directions (north, east, south, and west) are also read in degrees, like the degrees of a circle. North = 0 or 360 degrees, south = 180 degrees, east = 90 degrees, and west = 270 degrees. These degrees which tell us a certain direction are also called bearings. CAMPING RULES & REGULATIONS PARK HOURS: Gates are closed at sunset and are opened at sunrise the next day. Only an emergency will warrant opening of gates after sunset. City Code 26-22 GENERAL BEHAVIOR: Quiet must be observed between 10pm and 7 am. Gambling is prohibited. City Code 16-2 No person shall deface or remove department signs, structures, or barriers. No person shall remove or injure any plants, trees, flowers, or rocks found on park property. City Code 26-32 No person shall engage in fighting or violent, tumultuous or threatening behavior; or engage in any other activity which violates any city or state code. All campers will occupy and place equipment only on the assigned campsite. Any tent or other equipment left unoccupied for more than 36 hours may be taken down, removed and disposed of. Campers will be responsible to pay for any and all damages that occur during your stay at Sandy Bottom Nature Park All refuse and garbage is to be placed in the trash receptacles provided throughout the park. City Code 32.1-5 No burning of trash is permitted. CAMPING STAY REQUIREMENT: Must have a permanent home address. Campers are allowed to camp in the park 14 days total per year, with a maximum of 7 days total per month. When 14 days have been used, campers will not be allowed to camp again until a new year has started. AGE REQUIREMENT: You must be at least 18 years of age to reserve a campsite. 1 adult per 5 minors MUST accompany campsites reserved for groups less than 18 years old.
